Should I Start Using Anti-depressants

At what age did you start taking anti-depressants?

I was about 18. I didn’t feel that they were working for me, but my psych. didn’t explain it thoroughly to me. He was German, and as Freudian as Freud. He looked like him too.Subsequently I self medicated for a few years. That worked better. The next time would have been about age 27, but the pills were terrible. Mellaril they were called. Major downers; zombie downers. I had to drop those too.Age 32 my doctor figured out on her own that I was being abused at home, in every way. She gave me something that worked instantly, even if people say that’s not true, it was for me. But tricyclics tend to make you gain weight, so after a year or so I got tired of being fat and happy, and settled for thin and motivated by fear, although I did have some real interests.Picked up again when I was out, and safe. That would have been about age 44. Went through a few different kinds, gained weight again, stopped taking them, lost weight again. A couple of years later I tried again, with Bupropion (Wellbutrin.) The pills had a smiley face on them - how cute!New doctor in the clinic, she had to mark her territory by taking me off Wellbutrin and giving me some damned pill that later I looked up - the success rate compared to a placebo was 50/50. I demanded the Wellbutrin again. Had some success for a couple of years, then back on the exploratory trail. Dropped them again - I was happy for real. Now I am back on the search path. Wellbutrin just didn’t cut it after 8 or 9 months. Happy trails.

Why do people start taking antidepressants?

I speak as a depressed person and a pharmacy student who knows a lot about antidepressants. First the long term side effects really are not bad at all for virtually all of them, you hear the commercials with the huge lists of potential problems, but each one is very very rare, maybe effecting one in every few thousand people on the medication. So that really isn't anything that would stop people from taking it, you mention weed and alcohol, alcohol in particular is FAR more dangerous then antidepressants taken under a doctors supervision.

As for why I don't just have sex or do drugs, none of that seems remotely appealing, nothing does. No matter how objectively great I should feel about something I still feel terrible. For example I'm in pharmacy school and just yesterday I finished my last semester of classes ever, I just need one year of internships and I'm done. I should be happy, excited, all my classmates are, but I'm not, I don't care.
When you are depressed, really depressed, you are constantly so down that you can't even remember what being happy feels like, all you can remember is how miserable you are and how much you hate your life. Simply continuing to exist seems like sheer torture, and you have to struggle to find something, anything, to keep yourself going even one more day.
In some depressed people, myself included, it gets so terrible that you truly honestly wish you could die, the mental agony that is every waking moment just becomes unbearable.

It is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, causing you to be less able, or entirely unable to feel any positive emotion or thought. The brain is such a complex system it truly is imposable to explain how it really feels, Just hope you never find out.

I'm glad that when you feel down you can pick yourself up, but if you actually had clinical depression you would never even consider asking a question like that.

What is it like to start taking antidepressants for the first time?

When you start taking antidepressants, it takes up to 6 weeks to act on neurochemical system of the brain. Some people do feel some side effects such anxiety, sweating, Nausea, vomiting, sleeplessness. Most of the time Psychiatrists starts with small dose and increases slowly till one gets required effects. It does take some time to adjust the body. For some individual few antidepressants may not work or adverse effects are more prominent in that case, your psychiatrist will change the medicine. Should I take antidepressants?

Good that you have consulted a Psychologist. If that two weeks therapy given by them, do believe in them and continue until further advice. Stop brooding about medication. Instead try to concentrate in your studies or other interests for your future success in life.In the two weeks consultation, your doctor must have judged the severity/stage of your depression and prescribed this tablet. Usually one to three tablets are prescribed initially .It will take seven days to feel the effect of this medication. Even after that if you are not comfortable or facing any side effects which are common, go back and consult with the same doctor. He may alter the dosage to comfort you.Keep in mind not to skip/stop your dosage prescribed( for any antidepressants). If one dosage is skipped, for which don’t try to compensate and consume together in the next.Medical condition is that, if psychological correction is not working these tablets are prescribed and if you still feel not comfortable you only have to go to your doctor again and find. Don’t try to take advise or search for any other alternatives. Because the sensitivity of your condition or stage of sickness that you face, is measured exactly only by a doctor who conducted last two weeks therapy. But don’t worry about taking tablets . You are young. You can get your problem solved easily with the help of your doctor.

Can't orgasm on antidepressants, should I start using a fleshlight and other things to try to achieve orgasm?

Yes, quite common to not be able to climax and ejaculate with antidepressants. I took zoloft for a while and had the same issue- as did a friend. Can go and go and go sex wise just not finish. I found this worked-- when you are ready to climax and ejaculate after enjoying your penis for a while, use your groin muscles to pull up your balls- do this repeatedly and that should get your scrotum all hard and tight against the base of the shaft and also should help you climax and release. Good luck.

Started taking antidepressant-need help~!?

I started taking the antidepressant called Effexor for the first time last night at around 9:00. I woke up this morning feelings very dizzy, I almost fainted, and I broke out in sweats and started shaking. It is now 6 30 and I feel alittle better but I still feel weird, even more weird and speaced out then I did when I started taking it. My doctor said that these symptoms of nausia will pass within the next week but Im scared to continue taking it since such a low dosage after one day is already making me feel this way. Any advice?

Antidepressants (zoloft)?

Zoloft takes about 3 weeks to get into your system. . . whatever you are feeling it probably isn't because of the zoloft. If you are still feeling anxious in about two weeks, go back to your doctor and ask him to adjust your dosage. Mine had to be adjusted two or three times before I felt better . . .

Keep at it, the relief is definitely worth it!

Can you plateau on anti-depressants?

Yeah, that's happened to me, also........I was doing great for a couple of years and then I started feeling weird again....Went to the doc and he gave me another type of antidepressant and those feelings soon went away......Take care, honey....It gets better............
