Should I update my iPhone 5 to iOS 10 from 7?
I've had the standard iPhone 5 since 2012 or 2013 and left it on a version of iOS 7. I'm finally running the battery low and apps aren't working right, like my weather app not updating and I can't download or update select apps because I don't have the latest firmware, but that doesn't bother me because I have all the apps that I want already on it. My worry is if I update the phone it would make it slowly and even more unstable and less usable oh, possibly even brick it. I've had older iPods that I have updated to their last update and it really slowed them down so I'm worried about this happening to my phone. What do you think I should do? Thank you.

I did, with few regrets. Some wanted apps required it, and time between charges increased. Security is reportedly improved. Answering the phone in a hurry can be tricky, though; too many silly options from accidental pokes and clumsy swipes.

Yes you should update to iOS 7. I have update and after four days of usage I can state following things:SPEED: there is no speed drop observed during various tasks. However the transition animation are same like ios7 on iPhone 5. Apple should decrease these transition time in future updates. BATTERY LIFE: After almost two years of heavy usage and everyday charging. My battery health has become 80%(determined from jailbreak app). Battery life is same as ios6 if you disable few functions like automatic app update and refresh. FUN FACTOR: after two years of using almost same UI. iOS 7 has brought a new life in my old iPhone. It is like getting a new phone. There are new functions to play with. Updated app feel fast and new. Transition animation are pretty good. Overall. You will enjoy if you can accept change.PERFORMANCE: overall performance has been same.

Having tested iOS 11 on iPhone 6 and compared with iOS 10.3.3, I can tell you this for sure- iOS 11 is not nearly as well optimised for iPhone 6 as it is for the newer models.Talking about speed, iPhone 6 runs faster and smoother (though not much of a difference) on iOS 10.3.3 when compared to iOS 11. Also, the boot time increased from about 25 seconds to 35 seconds as I updated my firmware version.But I wouldn’t say that you should hold yourself back from trying the new features and perks that come along with iOS 11. Apple will continue signing the old firmware for sometime so that means, you can keep a back up of your iPhone, upgrade to iOS 11, try it out, and then you can easily come back to the old firmware. If you don’t know how to do it, you’ll find endless guides on the Internet to help you.If you find that the new features are worth the compromise in the speed of the phone, do not downgrade to iOS 10 and keep using iOS 11.But I would not recommend to keep upgrading your iPhone further as more updates roll out. Think twice before doing so because Apple practises scheduled obsolescence. Your iPhone will only get slower. Apple doesn’t want its users to hold on to its old models. So the optimisation of new software will keep on getting worse.

You shouldn't. I did and I went back.The performance is horrible, loading time is worse (yet the UI and animations are the same as in 7.1.2 so no apparent reason for the GPU to be overloaded), and overall the workflow is worse.If you're ok with Reduce motion and Reduce transparency both enabled, then it might be ok for you. To me such a huge performance impact isn't worth the new features in iOS 8 available on the 4S.Future builds might be better though. I hope Apple will improve the same way they did with iOS 7.1.
