Why would Obama want Iran to have nuclear capabilities?
Obama doesn't want Iran to have nuclear capabilities. What Obama wants is to secure US interests in the region. Obama wants to find the best path that ensures Iran would not build a nuclear bomb. Negotiations are the best path. Iran will not unlearn her nuclear capabilities, even if their nuclear facilities are bombed away(which is extremely costly). Obama understands that a war with Iran, which is the only alternative to the current nuclear deal, does not serve US interests in the region. Iran is a much tougher opponent than Iraq, is capable of harming US interests around the world, and has been practicing asymmetric warfare against US for decades. Even a ground operation in Iran would not ensure that the following government is any more US-friendly than the current one. It will certainly create even more chaos in the middle east, and give extremists another recruitment farm. He has understood that a decade of sanctions has not held Iran back, and has only made it more keen to develop its nuclear technology. In 2003, Iran had 200 centrifuges, and had halted their operations altogether. The Bush administration refused to give Iran any sanctions relief, and called them "Axis of Evil". Iran restarted their program, and under the heaviest sanctions regime, developed 20000 centrifuges and 200 kg of 20% enriched uranium. The negotiations with the moderate government, in the past 2 years have dialed the program back significantly. Almost all of the 20% enriched uranium is converted into fuel cells. It has given IAEA inspectors access to key Iranian facilities, and established a process where Iran can get sanctions relief, in return of abandoning parts of its nuclear technology. Due to the success in this confidence-building step, he is continuing with his plan of putting in a long term process of verification, where Iran is disincentivized from pursuing a military track, and is subjected to intense scrutiny about their program. Obama is doing what a sane politician would do, look at the facts, and decide what's best for their country.
