Should The Dvla Keep Drivers Records Forever

Do I need to inform the DVLA after having LASIK surgery?

The question has been asked of the DVLA by others - one response was posted to the forums on this topic indicating that you’re not required to inform them if your vision has been corrected so that you no longer need glasses to meet the legal requirements to drive - see below:“cieranc Mon, 16 Jun 2014 - 11:28Response from DVLA:I can confirm I can reply to your enquiry without your middle name. You are not legally required to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) that you no longer need to wear glasses. However, if you still wish to remove the 01 eyesight information code from your driving licence, you will need to complete a D1 application form. Please send your application form with a covering letter highlighting the change to your eyesight and both parts of your driving licence. U.K. drivers forced to stop driving in Europe after Brexit. Just another spiteful and recriminatory threat I suppose. What does Quora think?

Contrary to Brexiteer's popular belief, the „faceless bureaucrats“ in the EU are not a collection of supervillains determined to annoy the British population on a permanent basis, but are actually working on making life easier and better for Europeans, not least with regard to free movement of people. One of the achievements of this is the implementation of a system of minimum standards for driving licenses that in turn leads to any EU member country accepting any EU issued driving license, no questions asked.Leaving the EU means getting out of this system and falling back on international standards. There are two international treaties on the recognition of foreign driving licenses and unfortunately the UK is signatory to the one most other EU countries are not. So what has been a non-problem for a few decades now resurges. There is little doubt that this will be resolved to some extent and that Brits with passenger cars will be allowed to drive anywhere in the EU on a UK license and vice versa and probably also without obtaining some „international license“ or something. It is however not unlikely that certain safety standards for HGV drivers or hazardous goods regulations make mutual recognition for professional drivers bureaucratically complicated or even block them from driving on the other side of the channel. There is no god given right to recognition of a foreign driver‘s license. There is however one based on European law but Brexiteers are determined to flush this down the drain.Just one of a gazillion points that need to be settled. No panicking justified, but Brexiteers should slowly realize that there are many positive things driven by the EU, they take as a given. So pointing that out is not spiteful and recriminatory, but simply stating that the EU is not the universal scapegoat for every single grudge a Brexiteer holds, but - all justified constructive criticism notwithstanding - a pretty useful organization.

How do you report someone for dangerous driving in the U.K.?

The key is evidence.I have a dashcam in my car as I do a lot of mileage and I want to have a record of idiot driving.Last December I was driving through a local village following a learner driver. There was a man in a large Mercedes 4 wheel drive behind me who seemed a little peeved as we were driving at the speed limit and he was driving way too close.I guess the learner was very nervous and after stopping at a red light he/she did the bunny hop think (this was a manual gear box) and started across the junction just as the light changed so I stopped. This did not suit Mr Mercedes who pulled out and passed at speed and against the red light. What he did not realise was that the learner was turning right and had stpooed about 50m in front waiting for other traffic to pass the other way before turning. The chap in the Mercedes finally relised and had to brake very hard to avoid a rear end shunt.I spoke the car number, make, colour and model loudly so it would be recorded by the camera and my wife repeated it with the single word “C**t!” as a full stop.I duly called the boys in blue and reported it. I was told that unless the evidence was unambiguous then there was not much they could do and in any event they only prosecuted if it was a blatant violation.I emailed the footage and got a call back a couple of days later. The officer said tht we could not get much clearer and that my wife’s expletive hit the nail on the head.I also had to make a witness statement.I had an e-mail last week. They threatened to prosecute which would have meant points on licence and a hefty fine but gave the driver the option to go on a driver awareness coursecosting approx. £100 and a full day wasted at the course - result!I will give it a couple of weeks and then put the footage on Youtube.

How do I find out, How many points I have on my "Drivers License?"

In the UK, either phone DVLA or use their online checking facility. If feeling brave, ask any police officer, they can ask their office to check while you wait. If you are stopped by the police, they already know, as they have a direct data connection to all of the DVLA’s records.Click on the link and follow the instructions.Check someone's driving licence information

Does your driver's license address have to match your vehicle registration address?

Does your driver's license address have to match your vehicle registration address? You are supposed to update your addresses on both your registrations and your driver’s license with the DMV when you move.In New Mexico, where I live, they do not issue new registrations or driver’s licenses for address changes, they just update them in the computer - or they are supposed to at least. When you get your next registration renewal and your next driver’s license, they will update the address on the forms. Check your DMV web site. There will be a form to fill out for address changes. This is why the officer will ask you for your current address at a traffic stop.

Do you lose your UK driving licence if you no longer reside in the UK?

Great answers! I just want to add that these responses do not apply to everyone in the UK… If you were there on Indefinite Leave to Remain, and have left the country for over two years, you have lost your ILR status, and therefore you no longer have a valid UK Driving License, regardless of the expiration/Renewal date!

Do people drive without a license?

People do it; it's just a fantastically stupid idea.  While driving without a license you are, by definition, uninsured (at least in the US, an unlicensed driver cannot be covered by insurance).  If you're in an accident, you're screwing the other person and their insurance, leaving aside that your behavior is, in fact, criminal in most jurisdictions. Here in Maryland, driving without a valid license is punishable by 60 days in jail.  In Maryland, like most states, you can have your eligibility for a license suspended, even if you don't yet have a license, due to traffic violations/points.  If you incur enough points that you're suspended (which you may not care about since you have no license), driving while suspended carries up to a year in jail.Get a license. Now, if you're not a legal resident, i.e. you're unable to get a driver's license, you have a bigger question to consider.  That, however, is outside this topic's breadth.

For automatic vehicles, can we use the left leg for braking and the right leg for acceleration?

Have you ever been behind a driver whose brake lights stay on most of the time, and thought “That car has a short in its wiring.” Most likely it is a driver who brakes with his left foot, and instead of placing his foot on the floorboard or dead pedal, he leaves it hovering over the brake pedal. He’ll swear he’s not touching the brake, but his brake lights tell a different story.I was once at a shop getting some work done (front struts if I recall correctly.) A driver was paying his bill and complaining about how much the work cost that was performed and how his brake pads didn’t last as long as they should. As he left, I watched his brake lights come on and stay on the entire time he drove away.

How can I change address on UK driving licence?

It’s easy. As you can access Quora, you’ll be able to do it online.Change the address on your driving licenceNote that the UK driving licence is now just the photocard. The paper part was discontinued years ago.If you want to do it by post, either download the document or get one from a post office. The service is free.If you somehow still have an ancient paper-only licence, (without any photo ID) you’ll need to complete the relevant form (again, either download one or get one from a PO) and provide photographs. The DVLA will then issue a new photocard licence.Incidentally, an old-style paper only licence is still perfectly valid, but to still have one, someone would need to have been at their current address and have had no need to update the licence for 20+ years!I believe it was possible to change the licence on an old-style paper version by filling in the change of address details & sending the licence back to the DVLA. That will no longer work, as you now need to provide a photograph for the new photocard licence.Incidentally, if your old photocard licence had sufficient time before it expired, you don’t need to provide the DVLA with new photographs. (They need to be updated every ten years). They send reminders otherwise.
