Why can't I draw images from my mind?
I completely understand because I often have the same problem. The fact is, whatever image you have in your mind is probably something inspired from real life and without mastering the skill of observation (not necessarily drawing), it's difficult to draw anything from your own head. I used to think all the time, as a kid, that I had finally understood how to draw someone from memory only to fail miserably when I actually put pencil to paper. The problem is, there's more to drawing then having the picture in your head. The next time you look at someone (I specialize in portraits so I have limited examples to give) try noting the shape of their eyes or nose or something else entirely unique about their features. In other words, learn to observe and NOTE features before you start drawing. Sketch the person from observation preferably multiple times and THEN try drawing them from memory. Sketching something distinct that you've actually already seen FROM MEMORY is the first step to drawing something from your own imagination. An easier way, that might backfire, is mastering a certain style of cartooning, like anime or Disney style. It might limit your creativity in the future making it difficult to break out of their style to draw something new, so be forewarned. It doesn't give you the practice you get when drawing a real person with unique and distinctive features. BUT, once you understand how a certain artist draws their characters to make them their own, you can start putting your own spin on their styles while having at least a generic formula to follow when drawing faces or bodies. For instance, you can see the similarities in the movies made by Don Bluth, Anastasia and Thumbelina (though not the best film) and how the characters' features are distinct from Disney and other cartoons. http://coloringpagesforkids.info/wp-cont... http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa24/... How can I master drawing in 3 months?
Why do you have a time limit in mind?Would you think someone could master the violin in three months? Or become an Olympic athlete? I doubt it.If you're impatient you'll just get frustrated with the natural rate of progress.But you can do a lot of practice, and have a great time doing it.If you're dedicated to this and you want to give it a serious try you'd need to:Clear your schedule of all other responsiblitesResearch your art supplies in advance, and have a basic stock handy, but be prepared to try a few different pencils and papers. I would go to the shop each week and get a stack of paper and a different drawing tool, and try to burn through it. See which ones you gravitate to.Working only in black and white; graphite pencils or charcoal would be the easiest. Color is a huge step which I would avoid for at least a the first year of training. Ideally, draw in monochrome for as long as you can take it before trying color. You’ll benefit from having one skill before you open the next can of worms.Take a basic drawing class - something that will give you contour drawing and shading values. (Still life, some basic figure drawing (gesture drawing). I would take this as early as possible. If you could register in two sessions of the same class and do twice as much class time as everyone else, that will be good. Or do home work and do every assignment twice Four nights a week would be a good goal. But classes are slower than training at home - the talking and setup/takedown is a waste to time. So:Work every day on your own drawing at home - for about two to four hours a day. (On top of your class).Arrange to draw the human figure from life (a drop in class on the classical nude. I used to go three times a week to life drawing at the peak of my learning phase).Go to the museum and draw sculpture. Draw marble sculpture - the lighting on white marble sculptures is often excellent.Have fun with it! Treat it like you’re walking the PCH or training for a marathon. It’s a art holiday!DO NOT: Judge your progress in any way until the three months are over.At the end of that time, look at everthing you have thrown in a pile and select 10 good drawings. Burn the rest. You should be pretty happy with the top 10 drawings. But you’ll probably realize you have only unlocked more skills to come!Good luck with it! California College of the Arts: What does "We prefer that the majority of drawings submitted in the portfolio be derived from direct observation rather than other sources (such as photographs)," mean?
It means that they prefer that your subject of drawing real world or your fantasy. Recently people do a lot of copies - they take a photograph and copy it by hand. This is technically a drawing. However, it is much easier to draw from 2D source to another 2D source. It involves good eye and a good hand. When you draw from real world or your imagination another skill joins the team. I am not sure how it is called, but let's call it a 3D vision, but in your head. This is a very important skill for any artists - to take 3D and put in it 2D or vise versa. This is what they want. Trust me, good eye and hand technique can be easily trained, but this head skill is more special.Hope it was helpful.
Drawing from pictures?
The question shouldn't be what is easier or harder. Just keep the pen, pencil, paintbrush, mouse or what ever moving. Keep practicing, keep challenging yourself. It's all good. But here is my story, maybe this will inspire. I decided after years to return to school. Took my dog eared doodles, first really bad attempts at painting, some drawings I litterally did on printer paper sitting at my boring job. Some drawings were very good that were taken directly from photos. (mostly wildlife. Things I'd never find.) But what got me the scholarship were the purely out of my head things. The winged man, some dragon like flying creature. The horned horses fighting over crevasse over a lava river! When the instructor asked where I got the idea, and I said from my head, THAT is what got me a nice scholarship. Not the better drawn copied animal images. Always push yourself to the next level. Why is drawing real people, so hard?
from what i have learned in classes it is because people are all different. im great at hands but i hate faces because of the details ive learned that working from top to bottom and from your less dominate hand to the dominate hand works better. the of hair not as stands but chucking it the eyes are round then you have the eye lids that affect it each nose is totally different watch for general shapes of the objects like the mouth and the eyes and such just remember that both sides are not the same either practice makes your work so much better work with eyes noses lips separate then put them together i learned in middle school to take other pictures cutting the face down the middle and trying to draw the other halves using the picture. if all else fails try the grid system using photos and just remember shading
How do I learn basic drawing skills?
I started out my drawing interests since young with lots of practises with the primitive pencils and paper. I would doodle on my school books, newspaper, anything that basically can be drawn upon (except the walls, essentially due to having fierce parents).Upon discovering comics (mostly manga), I started mimicking various artists' drawing styles, like how they would draw faces, eyes, hands, etc. (I especially adore Dragonball Z and Slamdunk back then.) And only with more practises, I moved on to drawing with pens, as this further improve my confidence as pens are non-erasable. So you can only get it right "once". (And I'd actually discovered you could shade with pens too.)When I got my first computer (back in the early nineties), was the first time in which I'd experienced my first electronic graphic software. Microsoft Paint. There wasn't any stylus or such, so everything was painted, painstaking pixel by pixel. I remembered myself enjoying hours doing so.As graphic software improves, with the advancement of Adobe Photoshop and the pairing of Wacom tablets, drawings today took a different meaning. I can now incorporate images, tweak colourations, hues and saturations, add animations, stuff never thought possible with the pens and paper.But even now, there are times when I just don't feel like staring at an electronic screen. I'll pull out my moleskin, find a good pen and start doodling, just for the sake of doodling. :)

How do I draw 3D sketches?
I am not a professional artist, just speaking from experience.3D drawing is really interesting as you have to imagine what the drawing would look like from a particular perspective and you create an illusion. So here's a simple example:If we draw a circle on a paper it will as obvious look like a circle from the top. But it would look like a compressed egg-shape if we look from some angle. So we draw a stretched egg-shape such that it looks like a circle when viewed from a particular perspective.This is what it would look like from the top. Add proper colors, shades and shadow. Cut out the top paper so that the drawing stands out when viewing as 3d.This is what it would look from that fixed point.So when drawing a 3d drawing we need to draw a stretched figure and the part that is going to be away should be larger. An exaggerated rough image just to understand perspective.Getting the lights, shades, shadows correct is very important as it helps the drawing blend in the surrounding. A lot of interesting stuff can be drawn using 3d techniques.This recently made orangutan was my first 3d drawing.There are a lot of videos on youtube. Check them out.PS: There's one lame trick just in case.Just draw the normal circle drawing. Cut out the surrounding paper in a way it would look from a particular perspective. And still it would look 3d. (Is it cheating though?)
