Should We Remove Guns From People With Mental Problems

Can autistic people own guns in the U.S.?

Yes.

This may change fairly soon with new gun laws. Autism in no way would cause a person to commit a shooting, but that seems to have no bearing because the Sandy Hook shooter had Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism).

Why do you support and promote removing citizens guns with gun control laws? What are you reasons that justify these laws and how accurate/efficient is your demanded law/s?

Like most Democrats, I do not support any comprehensive gun ban or gun removal laws. However there already are laws which remove guns from people and I think there’s an argument to be made for their expansion. Here in Texas, if you’re convicted of domestic violence you lose your gun rights. This makes a lot of sense. I’ve always been a fan of that saying “If someone shows you who they are, believe them.” So if someone shows that they’re willing to abuse their spouse or children then they’ve forfeited their access to a tool which allows them to instantly snuff out their lives.I think that this could be expanded. For instance, if you’re suspected of drunk driving in Texas, they hold an administrative hearing before you ever appear in court so that they can suspend your driver’s license because you’ve shown that you’re a danger. You can bring a lawyer and fight it, but it gives the State the tool to remove a danger. I think that a similar arrangement should exist for gun owners accused of domestic violence, assault, or who are self harming. The removal could be reversible but it removes the easiest means those people have of killing themselves or others.

Why doesn't the American government just ban guns?

Hey there!I have done gun debates at school… And let me tell you this, right from the gecko. Don’t join the hate gun club. Here’s a general, brief statement of a ten page essay that I wrote. I will leave a link to the essay if you want to read it.1 - Funny you mention China because last I heard was numerous mass STABBINGS in China. Where men with knives would walk into a kindergarden classroom, stab the teachers, children, etc… Funny how the media doesn’t point that out. ESPECIALLY since it happened close to the date of the Sandy Hook shooting.2 - Taking away guns reduces our chance of fighting back against the government if it say, is deciding to turn into a dictatorship… *cough* *cough* China *cough* *cough* Don’t even get me started on the horrendous human rights violation in China and no one can do anything because guess what? They get sent to camps where they get harvested for organs… WITH GUNS THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAVE!3 - Researchers have shown that shootings happen not because guns are evil, but of mental health issues. Sandy Hook and numerous other shootings are by people who have grown from a horrendous childhood (Sandy Hook kid was bullied intensely by his peers) or an extremist (2016 shooting in a gay club by you know, straight guys). So ban guns and ignore the problem or should we say cut off part of a cancer and let it grow back?4 - Its way better to train people in gun usage, like a police course 101, but less intensive and more friendly. Research have shown that VIOLENT teens who have gone through martial arts programs are calmer and more productive members of society. Going back to number 3, what was it about mental health?5 - Guns are a great self defense tool. You might say, “Guns are evil.” But picture your sixteen year old beautiful daughter in the house when burglars invade. Would you rather come home and comfort your daughter for defending the house or would you rather come home, find her naked and gang raped? Your choice. (Yeah, I know, damsel in distress and all that, sorry feminists!)To me the hate gun club is just, horrendously… Wrong. If the people would just spend two seconds doing research, they would find a better long term solution. Pretending that gun don’t exist doesn’t make it disappear, it is there, and it can be used for good…Thanks with much respect,Kent ZhengGun, Harder or Easier to Get? - Kent Zheng

Can you do a background check on someone for mental illness? Isn't medical records confidential?

"Confidential" means "we won't release this information without your permission, or unless a law enforcement agency requires us to". If a person is buying a gun, and the law requires that any gun buyer must submit to a background check, then the buyer has to sign a waiver allowing his/her record to be checked.

Most insurance companies will also require that the insured person will release medical records to the company, if the insured person wants the company to pay for the medical costs.

In fact, I've signed a waiver that allows my doctors and their staff to discuss my medical issues with my husband. This is mostly because if the doctor's office calls with test results, they can't tell him about my results unless they have that waiver on file.

So the answer is, this can be a legal requirement of getting a gun, just as age can be.

Should the mentally ill have the right to own firearms in the USA, making the supposition that they are not felons and that the Second Amendment is upheld?

Several states already enact a 5 year pause on owning or operating a firearm if there has been a 51-50 (involuntary hold placement in a mental facility).  However there's also holes in 51-50 policies.  Essentially if you have ever had ANY sort of mental health history its more of the precaution to automatically bring you in.  This puts a "scarlet letter" on anyone that has had any sort of issues in the past and doesn't allow per society's fear for anyone to actually "recover."Anyone who has mental health issues in the past can then become fearful of the system.  As it is many mental health issues go unreported and perhaps part of it is because... people with even minor mental health issues are put into a defunct/felon area.It should go without saying that there are some VERY deranged people out there that clearly shouldn't own guns or any sort of weapons for theirs and others safety but that is not the case with many more whom might have minor issues of depression or what not.  "Funny" enough but these aren't the types of people that generally will have written mental problems as the catch 22 of getting a 51-50 called on you is that someone potentially "cares enough" to get you some attention.  A lot of mental illness that really NEEDS the treatment goes untreated because simply: people don't "care enough" sometimes. With as over diagnosed as any sort of mental illness is this just seems like a bit of a scapegoat and "easy way out" sort of maneuver to remove guns out of the hands of perfectly safe individuals. To be more succinct: go play around on webmd or a site like it and see if you don't suddenly feel as if you might have symptoms of something dreadful.  The same thing can be done on an even worse manner with psychology.  People are inherently broken to an extent.  No one is perfect.  Perfect doesn't exist.

Hey you from the NRA do you realize how stupid your pro gun arguments are?

You guys should all be thrown in prison. Other people's blood and misery is making you rich.

How many NRA arguments have you learned by heart to defend your sick business???

"Guns don't kill but people do"

HOW DISHONEST AND EVIL YOU ARE! SHAME ON YOU. WOULD YOU MAKE THE SAME ARGUMENT IF YOUR KIDS WERE KILLED????

Why do Americans skirt around actual gun control & talk of "mental illness" & "diversity" which are nowhere near as relevant? Why can't they face the issue & get rid of guns? Or are they just violent by nature compared to other nations?

Our nation was born under a cloud of black powder smoke— first created at Lexington and Concord and sealed at Yorktown. Our civil strife less than a century later left us under a similar cloud— fighting for similar principles. That smoke carried over to our shame as we took over a continent from the indigenous peoples (who had been at war for a 1000 years amongst themselves. We gained control of a hemisphere and held it with firearms, and then reached beyond. The British and the French were saved by our Citizens Army in both World Wars. Who knows what would have happened if the Communist expansion had not been stopped on the Korean peninsula? Then Vietnam, Gulf 1 and 2 happened with Afghanistan thrown in. This doesn’t include Panama, Grenada, Guatamala, the Contra Wars, Somolia, and a hundred other wars.I’m about 70. I can’t remember a two year period when our nation has not had troops in battle somewhere around the world. I have lived surrounded by Veterans. Americans, for better or worse, have lived by the gun and a couple of times (at least) it was American citizens coming together to save (at least part of the world for freedom). We’ve done bad. We’ve done good. And guns have been a part of it all.And we have witnessed what has happened to nations where the people did not have guns. Do you think that Hitler would have marched 8 million to gas chambers if the people had been armed? Do you think that Stalin or Mao or PolPot or the Turks or the Japanese in China and Korea would have done what they did to 100 million of their people— people depending on their governments to protect instead of starve or massacre them?Americans can be a kind and generous people with our own and with others. Or we can be ferocious and warlike to defend ourselves, our families, our homes, our homeland or the world when riled. And in so many cases, we’ve done it with food in one hand and a gun in the other.
