Why is the US against reparations for African Americans?

Slavery was a horrible thing. Let me help with why AAs should not be given reparationsNo African Americans today were slaves.No Americans that are alive have ever owned slaves within the borders of the United States.Many former slaves post civil war did go back to Africa. The ancestors of many current AAs had the opportunity to go to their ancestoral home and chose not to do it. These people felt that they would have a better life in the US than in Africa.The country of Liberia was founded by former slaves that went back to Africa. Liberians consider themselves Americans.AAs have many opportunities that white America does not have. Many state, local and federal government agencies have contract set asides that are only available for minorities. Many corporations track this as well. When I worked at The Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, this was tracked. The fact that these often go unfilled is a display that the AA community has plenty of income opportunity elsewhere. Therefore, they are happy with their income. Not sure why these are due more money on this reason alone.Many colleges, schools, and universities have educational set asides for AA and other minorities. I am not sure if grants and scholarships go unfulfilled or not. Many states within the US today use proceeds from their lotteries to allow students to go to school for free. This includes all people that are residents of these states.Success is about individual accomplishment. If you want to be successful you can be. If you don’t want to be successful, you can choose not to be.Who should pay for reparations? What about the tribes that sold their own people into slavery? What about the other countries (looking at Britain) that Facilitated the slave trade to the US with their ships? What about the US Navy attempting to blockade the slave trade well before the civil war? Many of these companies that “should pay” didn’t even exist during slavery.No, no, no. This is just another shake down attempt from a bunch of “social justice warrior” types trying to get money out of others. I would have disagreed with slavery in the lead up to the civil war. Should we pay off today? No.

Is reparations for slavery to African Americans a good for America?

It is not much good for anybody. After all, who is going to pay what to whom on what basis? I am a New Englander with relatives who died on the liberating side in the Civil War. Assuming the reparations are paid out of the U.S. Treasury, do I get a tax credit for that?How many payments are to be made and to individuals or families? Is this means tested? Does a recipient have to prove their ancestors were actually slaves? Does the publisher of Jet Magazine get reparations or does his income make him a payer rather than a payee? Is this about reparations or just another wealth redistribution scheme being given a veneer of racial justice? Let’s have the discussion, but let’s not assume it is a good idea to assume that people are crippled by their ancestry and cannot make a decent living without a handout. That is just plain insulting.Reparations, in the sense of repairing the ill of slavery, has been going on since the slaves were freed. The process was incomplete and messy particularly since the Democratic Party spent the next century trying to keep the descendants of slaves under their thumb. (I am fairer than Dinesh D’souza in that I recognize that this turned into an internal fight between the old school and new school Democrats, but the party nevertheless took until about the 1970s to lose the racist wing of their party - mainly to attrition, not to the GOP as legend has it - Sen. Robert Byrd didn’t “quit” until 2010!)Reparations has included the civil rights legislation of the 1960s and affirmative action and other helping-hand programs that were really put in gear by the Nixon administration. But the question becomes, at what point are reparations an excuse for making minority groups dependent on the benevolence of the powers-that-be? When is it just a ploy to get votes for do nothing politicians? (Voting to give away other people’s money seems easy and absolves one of actually making a commitment to do something constructive.)When does a reparations scheme become nothing more than the liberal bigotry of low expectations?

Would reparations for African-Americans be more likely to heal the nation or divide it?

Divide.Who pays?1.5% of Americans owned slaves. 98.5 % never owned a slave, most never wanted slaves, 16 states were not even in the union before the civil war. They never had slavery. Do Hawaiians owe reparations? How about Alaskans? Or the other 14 states that were not even part of the country?In fact, many of the Slave Free states actually WENT TO WAR to free the slaves. Do they owe reparations? How about the illegals coming in? Do they owe reparations?Do African Americans pay reparations too? Because reparations can only come from tax dollars, there is no magic reparation money.What percentage of African Gene's are required to receive reparations? Some slaves were raped, those should recieve more t hg an the mixed race African Americans who were not raped. Right? How are you going to sort through that?Many Africans decendents live here now that never had slave ancestors, like Barack Obama.He married Michelle, who likely does have slave ancestors.
