Should You Let Your Next Door Neighbour Use Your Wireless Internet

How can I determine which neighbor is listening in on wireless land line phone calls?

It's already been stated that it would require expensive equipment. So, I propose another solution. Instead of buying the expensive equipment, why not use a fraction of that money to buy a new phone that is digital and uses DSS or DECT? Now, it is still not 100% secure. If your neighbor has the money for the specialized equipment, encrypted digital phones can also be hacked. The question is whether your neighbor has those resources. Is he a security researcher? A government agent? If not, you're likely OK.Now, if you're sure a neighbor is listening in, consider the possibility it isn't through your cordless phone. It's entirely possible he physically spliced your lines and/or is tapping directly into them. You should be sure the box outside your home is secure.

I am using an unsecured Wifi from a neighbor. Can they discover my log in name & password? What about my IP, can they track me with Gmap Location using IP?

Your neighbor will not be able to see you on his router or network neighborhood if you turn off Discovery:Start/Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center/Change Advanced Sharing Settings/Turn off discovery/Save changesYour external IP address is assigned to his router, not your computer. GMap location can be off by hundreds of meters, it  cannot locate a building. Even if it could, hypothetically, it would point to the building containing the router, not to you.The most common way to read your network traffic is through a router feature called Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Consumer-grade routers do not have SNMP. (Technically, they do, but it is locked.) If your neighbor is using a commercial-grade router or is savvy enough to change his router's firmware, he would not be running an unsecured WiFi or he is running a honey pot. If you are jumpy, check his router's model (below). He could read your traffic by putting a computer with two network ports, or a hardware monitor, between his router and cable modem. That is very unlikely for a home user. He could use Port Forwarding or DMZ in his router. That's also very unlikely. To test for it, get your own NAT address by running cmd then ipconfig. IPv4 Address will be something like 192.168.1.105. Run ping 192.168.1.105. If it takes longer than 1 ms to ping yourself, your traffic is being forwarded. While you are there, get the Default Gateway, which will look like 192.168.1.1. That's his router. Plug it into the address line of a browser, preferably IE. The login prompt will probably disclose his router model. If it begins with WRT, it is a consumer-grade Linksys (/admin), WG is consumer-grade Netgear (admin/password), D is D-Link (admin/admin). If you can log in with default user/password, your worries are over, he is a rank amateur. If he is running a commercial-grade router, you have been entrapped.

Neighbor wants to use our internet connection? (Wi-fi)?

Our neighbor recently asked if they could use our internet connection via wi-fi. They said they would pay half the bill. If we allow them to do this, will they be able to see what websites we go on, see any of our saved passwords, go into any of our settings, change anything, etc. I just want to make sure that our privacy will not be invaded as we don't know our neighbors on a personal level. How does this type of thing work? Will they be required to put in a password in order to snatch our internet?

Would it be a bad idea if I let my neighbor use my wifi why?

How well do you know your neighbour?I mean - really?Because anything he/she does on your wifi will be logged to your router, your external IP address and will be recorded by your ISP as being done by YOU.Now - just to be clear - I am not suggesting your neighbour is a terrorist, someone who likes child pornography, someone who downloads illegal music or video or someone who would do anything else that would get you into trouble on the web. I’ve never met them (unless you are my neighbour as well, and that would be one hell of a coincidence, don’t you think?) and I wouldn’t like to cast aspersions on someone who is probably totally innocent. But - to be honest - unless you are pretty certain they are not going to be using your wifi to do things that will get you into trouble, I would suggest maybe not doing it on a regular basis. And this is kind of a hard thing for me to write, because usually I am a happy go lucky guy, but I really don’t know any of my neighbours, and the houses next door to me are both rentals and my neighbours change quite a lot, so honestly - my wifi is generally buttoned up tight.I honestly don’t think you are going to have terrorists/paedophiles/drug dealers/etc living next door to you, but *shrug* it is up to you how far you want to open your wifi. Also (and this is kind of a secondary concern) - depending on the configuration of your router and your wifi network - once you give them access to your wifi, you might also be giving them access to every file on every computer you have. Including all the pictures and videos you and your partner took on your last holiday in the Azores….. if you get my drift. So - that’s something else to consider. (Which - I guess - might be more of a reason not to than the whole “who are they” thing, depending on what you and your partner got up to in The Azores? *wiggles eyebrows*)In short - there are any number of reasons not to, but it comes down to how well you know them, how much you trust them and just how nice a person you are.

If I use my neighbor's Wi-Fi, will he know what sites I'm browsing?

I am going to give you a slightly different answer than what most others seem to say here. If you are accessing the Interwebs through your neighbor's Wifi ... there are only two possibilities that I can think of:Your neighbor is an idiot! Or a simpleton. What ever the case be, the only reason he/she has left the network open is because she/he doesn't know better. Somebody needs to talk to your neighbor and help him/her "plug" that hole that has been left wide open.Your neighbor is super smart. He's left a network open on his router so that "idiots" like you and a few others would use it while he actively tracks your activities and possibly gets access to all your data. For all you know he/she is already logged into your bank account and transferring whatever little money you have to a bitcoin exchange in Timbuktu so that he can disappear before you realize that you lost your money by using the free Wifi he let you use. Essentially, he set a honeypot. And you walked in like a bee! :) Now he's sucking you dry and making your life miserable. In the off chance that you are super smart ... and know how to break into other people's Wifi network ... I would say you should use your talent to:either get hired at a top security companyor go start your own company so that you can find a permanent (or at least a long term) solution to such holesIn any case, using your neighbor's network without his/her explicit permission may be illegal depending on the law in your land. The consequences could be severe if you get caught.

How can I use my neighbors WiFi if I don't know what their password is?

Okay, this keeps popping up on my phone. It goes back to the golden rule: treat others how you want to be treated. Not everybody including myself (as I have some neighbors paying me for WiFi) has all the money in the world to buy and put down for data and bandwidth…Example: i get 1024 GB data personally per cycle with http://Cox.com , and it’s $10 for every 50 GB over that limit, so you have the option of $30 for 500 GB additional or $50 for unlimited….which is on top of $80 for 300 Mbps download speed tier.((Needless to say all the virtual access points created in AP Isolation and Net Isolation, screwing with my router (dd-wrt)…))

Can I use my neighbor's Wi-Fi connection?

Hi, near to my house there are 6-7 wi-fi connections with a strong signals. I am thinking of stealing one of the connection from them. Is this illegal to use someone's connection? Is there any software which helps us to know their password and the software is safe to download?

How can I access my neighbors wifi?

This is going to absolutely blow you away here… Firstly, you must approach your neighbour’s house - do this stealthily to avoid detection. Now, once at their door, you must signal to them somehow. This may be by knocking on the door, ringing the door bell, or in desperate situations just shout “DING DONG” really loudly.Once they come to the door, you should greet them. Ask them how they are, maybe you could even ask them about that cruise to the Caribbean that they just went to. Once familiarities are over, proceed to the next stage.Beware, this is the hard bit. You must ask them if you could use their Internet, but you’ll need a good reason. For example, you’re having problems with yours and the engineer isn't coming for a few days. Then, provided they’re feeling nice, they might just give you the password! If you were hoping to “hack” their password, because you’re a “hacker man”, then don’t. Not only is it illegal, you’re just being cheap. Get your own Internet.Update: Wow, 350 upvotes! This is absolutely amazing, especially for a sarcastic response I blasted out quickly! Thank You!Update 2: Okay. I am lost for words. 1.3k upvotes is incredible. I cannot believe it, thank you everyone! Thanks You’s: I would like to say thank-you to Collin Kiney, Ayaka Sarah Yamaga-White, Justin Lincoln and Robert Taylor for spelling and grammar corrections. These are much appreciated!

If I use my neighbor's Wi-Fi, will they know?

Sure, there are many ways your neighbor can find out if you’re connecting to their Wi-Fi•IP address-If they are so inclined, they could log into their router and see if their DHCP server assigned an IP to a device they they didn’t connect and what IP their DHCP assigned it•Network host name-If you have ever set up Windows after installing or first boot of a new PC, you may see a spot where it says “host name” or “computer name”, many times we just insert our name like “Mike-PC” or “Susie’s-PC” or something like that, some routers (like AT&T’s U-verse RG) will show the host name of any device connected to it, along with assigned IP and MAC address, on the firmware’s homepage, not only that, but it will even show if the device is currently offline or onlineUnencrypted traffic-There is a very popular packet sniffer by the name of WireShark, this will basically scan or “sniff” the network looking for any data passing through the network, if you look in the right spot, if the messages (say an instant message for example) are unencrypted, WireShark will show that IM text plain as day, word for word, just as you sent it, of they didn’t send it, but saw it in a packet sniffer, they would know that you connected to their networkChances are though, unless your neighbor is a known hacker, nerd, IT professional or some other sort of techie, they probably don’t even know what an IP is let alone log into their router looking for “Wi-Fi snarfers” (real term) or wardrivers on their network, and have probably never heard of WireShark let alone have it installed and know how to use it

How can I get my neighbor's WiFi password using an app?

I don’t answer questions about how to do illegal things. I also don’t know any script kiddie shit, if there is an app you can just google for it and watch the YouTube video that spells it all out. Why ask the question? Thanks for the A2A.
