I used to be a dental nurse. It depends on what kind of rinse you are using. If you are using a rinse that claims that it loosens plaque before brushing, then use it before. But there is no research that states that these rinses have any benefit.

As far as Listerine and Crest Pro-Health Rinse go, you should rinse after brushing and flossing. These rinses have high substantivity, which means that even after you are done rinsing, the chemicals are still on the gums and teeth and are released slowly over time. So, the product continues to work even after you're done rinsing. If you brush or floss after rinsing, then you are removing it from your teeth and gums and limiting its effect.

Biofilm is a well protected microbial colony that forms on teeth surface .The concept of brushing is to remove the biofilm mechanically from the teeth surface .The surface changes that happen after brushing make them vulnerable for further biofilm formation .To prevent that and to mineralise fluoride is added .So if you use a mouthwash with fluoride ,then it can be used right after brushing .

Do you have to use mouthwash before or after you brush?

Depends on the type of mouthwash. Usually good mouthwashs have chlorhexidine in them. Rinsing your mouth with chlorhexidine mouthwash after brushing will cause brownish discoloration of the teeth.Being a dentist, I would recommend you to use mouthwash and brushing separately. For eg. Get up in the morning, brush, have breakfast, use the mouthwash. You can also carry a small bottle of mouthwash with you and rinse your mouth after meals. Hope this helps.

When you use mouthwash do you rinse before or after you brush?

Depends on the mouthwash-

If it is a plaque reducing rinse (like Plax) then you use it before your brush.

If it is a regular antiseptic rinse (Listerine, Crest Pro Health) than after you brush and just spit it out. You can rinse with water if you feel it is really necessary but it will reduce the residual bacteria killing effect.

If it is an anticavity rinse (like Act, or Listering Tooth Defense) than after, BUT just spit it out no rinsing with water after. This Listerine is a fluoride rinse that is meant to coat the teeth with a residual amount that will be absorbed by the teeth to prevent cavities....

Hope that helps!
