What are some show horse names?

The official name is generally what is on the registry's paper to that specific breed. The AQHA(American Quarter Horse Association) required a combination of the Sire and Dam’s namesake on the papered name this was in the early 1980’s and I am not aware if this rule has changed or not. But when one is on the show circuit, the owner may call that horse something entirely different than what is on that paper. That particular horse’s moniker has something to do with the horse’s personality, its coat color, a funny memory, it totally depends. My horse, that was registered with the AQHA didn’t go by his papered namesake. He went by the name of “Sunny” or “Sunbuns”. Why was that? The sheen of his coat was coppery and warm in his summertime coat. He shined like a copper penny and oh so pretty! But his registered name was Millie’s Sun. He didn’t become a show horse but my friend. Reliable and that made for good memories. The registered names will vary by country too!

How do you think of a show name for a horse?

Most show names reflect a horse's bloodlines, either incorporating themes from the sire's and dam's names, or including a prefix from the breeding farm. If you did not breed your horse, but are just looking to create a name to show him/her under -- just pick something that you like!

Why do horses need show names?

I live in ireland, and we have stable names, show names and then registered names(on passport).
The stable names are just for using at home. usually 1 or 2 syllabels.
The show names are for people who dont do registered but go to shows and want and sometimes need something different.
The registered names are for big shows that you win prises and that will go in a paper etc.
But over here we can changed the registered name by changing the name on the passport. This is what im doing at the moment, but cannot find a name that i like to use for a registered name in front of everyone.

Possible Show Names For My Horse?

Do not use Oliver Twist - this is a famous open jumper Champion's name. Everyone would know. (There used to be a breyer model even). Before electing any name I would do a google search on it. That way you can avoid a famous name. Consider the breed (or breeds) never name your horse something Arabic unless he looks arabian etc- Remember that if you win you want the judge to be able to pronounce it. Make sure it goes well with your name (eg: Oliver Twist ridden by Horracio Spinner would be odd...
Consider color - a beautiful black or gray could add some spice to the show ring
Consider personality - never name a goofy acting horse something serious unless you want people to take it as a joke
Consider looks - ugly or beauty? Beautiful Horses can get away with more exotic names than ugy ones can - (eg. models wear weird clothes -yet they look good - I don't!)
Consider your showing style - English vs. western vs. saddleseat vs. reining - all of it makes a difference
Have fun - If you like a name go for it - it is your horse!
Check the dictionary for fun words that mean cool things - like Baion - means a small drum used in celebrations Tang - musical instument / orange flavored drink or a feeling. Look for cool words that you can mix and match to get the right ring for your horse.
That said - I could use 10 points and a thumbs up -
Arabian - Oli a' Babah (like in 1001 Nights the book)
Oliver's Last Stand
It Ain't Over 'Til it's Oliver (or Oli)
All-Over Oliver
Prince Oli
All'Over (insert color, riding style etc)
Sock-Hop Ollie (for those sporting stockings)
Rock'n'Ollie
Oliver You
Oliver's (your favorite short sentance from song or movie)
Make Ole'
Fall Over My Oliver
The Initals of your name (like RRC's) then followed by Oliver Fandangled / or other cool word from dictionary
Ollie Folly
Oli Jolly
Oliver Town (like all over town)
Oli Angel
Oliver's Flash 'n' Bang
Let us know what you pick!
