Siberian Husky Exercise

Siberian Husky Exercise?

I have always wanted a siberian husky and now my dad is moving out of his apartment so i have my chance. I am still in school so i will not have all the time to give it exercise. Most people say that they need a walk/run a day but I obviously can't do that with a 8 hour school day and then homework. I was wondering if I had the whole yard fenced-in and let it run around all day, would it be enough exercise? I would also be able to give it walks at least 2 times a week and go skijoring with it occasionally. Is that enough exercise? also what is the yearly cost for kibble, treats, toys, vet bills, ect?

How much exercise does a Siberian Husky need?

A husky will be a great dog for you if you like distance running, cycling (especially mountain biking), or cross-country skiing. If that's not your style, your husky will be restless, and you won't meet your dog's exercise requirements. It's never a good idea to get an active dog, hoping to get active oneself. Best to find a dog that suits your activity level.

They should get at least one hour of HARD running every day. Some people I know lived by a dirt road, and the only way they could get their dog enough exercise what to hop in the car and let the dog run behind the car for an hour.

If you live in a warm climate, a husky isn't the best idea. They are uncomfortable in hot weather, and it's pretty difficult to run all those miles with a winter coat on in the middle of summer. They are not known to be swimmers, so that's not likely an option for the hot months.

They also require a fair bit of brushing, especially during shedding season, to take care of that thick, plush coat.

This said, if you have the space, and you are already a very active person, a husky will make a great pet.

Siberian Husky Exercise Needs?

I have been wanting a Siberian husky for some time. Yes i have researched the breed for about 2-6 hours for about 4 months now and know about them jumping fences and digging holes. The truth is, I don't care about holes in the lawn... makes no difference to me. My problem with getting a Siberian husky is their exercise but I finally came up with a plan that might actually work. I am in 8th grade with 1/2-2 hours of homework a night but I have a dad that is very willing to help me. I know that it is very unlikely that when/if i go to college i could have a dog. I was thinking that I could give a 9-10 year old dog that is most likely gonna die in the next 3-5 years a loving family for its last days because then it would have passed on before college but not had to die in a cramped noisy shelter and i would have experience for owning a Siberian later in life. Would it need less exercise? (i know it depends on the dog but on average). It is also my first time owning a dog and your not supposed to get a sibe for a first time owing a dog but would having it be old change that? I was thinking of having a dog door leading to a fenced in run (i know i know they can jump, climb, and dig, you don't have to tell me) and having it be previously crate trained and spend the nights inside. Im guessing i could give it 30mins-1hour walks a day because of school and homework and bring it to rivers and on hikes during the weekend. Would that be enough exercise or not? Please only answers from experienced current or in the past Siberian husky owners only...

Siberian Husky exercise?

I think it would be enough. I think people underestimate the amount that indoor play, training, and mental exercise can tire their down.

Do 10 minutes of training a day (I like to do it right before dinner), play some hide and seek (you hide or hide a toy), get some puzzle toys you can put food in, kongs you can freeze food in and feed your dog their dinner from this type of toy. This will stretch 2 minutes of eating to an hour. If you're going to the bank drive through, take your pup (properly car-seated) along for the car ride. Little new experiences like this really tire them out.

A good training class once a week really tires mine out for the rest of that night and the next day.

On the weekends we do much more, usually a 2 hour walk somewhere safe where he can be off leash and that really tires him out and is fun for both of us.

If my pup really gets crazy then we play Chase-It until I notice him slowing down. He *loves* it, I can make him do tricks before I move it for him to chase so he is learning, and it tires him out without tiring me out!

How much exercise should a 3 month siberian husky get?

Enough to tire them out! :) A tired puppy is a good puppy.

ADD: I would not recommend biking, or prolonged running (on pavement or on a treadmill) until the puppy is older. The post above me is not taking into account the puppy's age or development.

What are some clever (or efficient) ways to exercise your siberian husky?

They need a ton of exercise until around 4 years old, after that they slow down a bit but still need more exercise than other breeds at this age. They love to run freely but is difficult to just let them go off leash when they’re young because they WILL run away. Huskies are stubborn and not easily trained. With our three we walk them every day at least once a day, on a obedience type of walk, heeling, which gives them mental e estimulation and make them tired. The longer the better. Then lots of play time in the backyard during the day.For several years we rented a cottage on an small island in the summer. It was their paradise, the island was small enough that they could run free and swim when they liked. Unfortunately other cottagers on the island were not fond of dogs and we had to stop going there. They are very athletic dogs and would do very well in agility training. We haven’t tried yet but planning on it.

How much exercise does a siberian husky need daily?

Well I have 3 huskies. They get a little over an hour a day of walking and 15 minutes of running (about 3 miles). I'm starting to get the feeling its not enough. I keep hearing that they need 1 hour of straight running, and 2 hours of walking. I understand the walking, but the running seems like too much. My sibes are generally very tired after their run, especially the eldest (4 years old).

So could anyone tell me if its not enough? And if they really need an hour????

if needed, they are 2, 3, and 4 years old.

How Much Exercise Does A Husky Need?

When I rescued my siberian puppy at 12 weeks of age, she walked the distance along with my 3 yr old adult siberian. The first couple of days she didn't quite make it so I carried her.

It didn't take her long though to complete the entire walks with my adult. The distance we go is 2-4 miles a day. It depends though on how hot it is and the weather. If it's a hot day (70+) then we might only go 2 miles. (yes 70° is hot for a siberian)

We always have water with us in case someone needs some.

As to weather or not the exercise increases or decreases, it depends on the dog, not the breed. If your dog looks like it's getting fat, then walk it a little more or feed it less. If it's got way to much energy after the walks, then you didn't go far enough.
