Side Effects Of A Spinal Tap

I had a spinal tap on Monday, how long does it take for side affects to wear off?

Hi, I had a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) on Monda at the er because I had a very very bad headache. They did a ct scan and a spinal tap. Both tests came back fine. Im still having some back pain from the spinal test but it is much better then it was, but I do have a small headache. Its not as bad as the headache was that I had when I went to the er but it is still hurting and annoying. I feel like a pressure feeling in m head and a pain at the base of my skull. I was told this could be a pinal tap headache and if it gets worse I can get a blood patch done but if its not that bad it should go away soon. how long till it goes away? Thanks in advance for helping out. :)

What is it like to get a spinal tap?

For me, it was a piece of cake compared to the headache that I was convinced was an aneurysm.  I was given the option of laying on my side (fetal position) or leaning forward while sitting up.  I chose option 2.  A spinal tap shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes (though if it's the resident's first procedure, it may take slightly longer as there will be a didactic component).  After you've been positioned, the L3/L4 or L4/L5 interspaces are palpated.  The area is sterilized and draped.  Lidocaine is used as an anesthetic agent and the initial prick is no worse than a normal injection.  The spinal needle (try not to look!) is inserted.  This part is not particularly pleasant, but if the lidocaine is doing its job, you'll feel more pressure than pain.  Try to catch a quick look at your CSF before it's taken to the lab.  It's cool to see what your brain is being bathed in.  If it's normal, it should be a transparent, water-like substance.Different institutions have different policies around post-lumbar puncture recovery periods.  Historically patients have been advised to lie flat for a couple of hours to decrease the likelihood of a spinal headache, a post-procedure complication that becomes evident within 24 hours and presents as an acute headache when assuming an upright posture.  You will feel some soreness after the procedure (hello, a 22 gauge needle just went into your spine) so keeping a low profile is probably not a bad idea.  If you're having a spinal tap, chances are, it isn't some fun elective thing you're doing to spend your FSA dollars in December.(Aside for women: While I've never had an epidural, I imagine the experience is very similar to a spinal tap.  See also: Childbirth: What is it like to have an epidural?)

Is a spinal tap considered surgery?

no its a subdural puncture test

Why should you consider taking a spinal tap test?

This is not a question that can be adequately answered on Quora. If a qualified physician (usually a neurologist, neurosurgeon, or in some cases an emergency room or infectious disease doctor) has recommended this test—-which is called a lumbar puncture (LP)—you must ask that person the reason for the recommendation. Usually the reason is to answer a question that cannot be answered any other way. Many of the conditions requiring an LP, such as meningitis, are life threatening; others including multiple sclerosis or idiopathic intracranial hypertension can cause severe disability if not properly identified and treated. The test itself has an undeserved reputation as being something horrible. The most common side effect or complication is a headache that can last a few days. None of the side effects or complications, or the discomfort of the test itself, compare to the risks of leaving one of those condition mentioned above untreated.

Has anyone ever had a spinal tap?

Spinal tap also call lumbar puncture,is a procedure to obtain csf for analysis to find out;infection, bleeding, certain inf lamination condition such MS,gillan-Barre syndrome and cancer. For analysis to find out csf contain amount;portent, glucose, blood, wbc and bacteria and fungus..complication(or side effects) including; headache, herniation(uncommon due to high intracranial pressure can push the brain to get squeezed into the direction of spinal cord),bleeding(due to trauma of the procedure)Epidermoid cyst(due to inplanted of epidermoid to spinal canal). This procedure is not very painful. For most common is headache after tap can drink a lot of fluid to reduce this problem.Csf is clear if bloody or cloudy will possible of infection.

How much does it cost to get stem cells? What are the side effects of stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy ranges from established treatments, through experimental therapies, to unproven but at least plausible treatments, to outright frauds. Some would be covered by insurance, and some wouldn't be. There is no way to determine “how much does it cost to get stem cells.”As for the side effects, the fraudulent stem cell “treatments” have caused blindness, infections, and even death. Legitimate stem cell treatment for serious diseases often have side effects that are quite severe, but the diseases the stem cells are used for are even worse.Basically, when you introduce stem cells into someone, they might not do anything, or they might grow too much, or something might go wrong with the procedure to introduce the stem cells (either a mechanical problem or some contaminant getting in along with the cells). Other side effects can be from drugs used to prepare for the stem cell treatment or to manage its side effects.Don't mess around with stem cell treatments that have not been tested and approved. Be aware that some clinics are offering stem cell treatments that have not been properly demonstrated to work but that are legal under state laws that haven't kept up with stem cell quackery.

What are the side effects of doing lumbar puncture in a baby?

If done correctly ( correct technique, placement  and position) and by an experience hand, there would be no side effects...If you are asking as a parent ,just ensure that the person performing is experienced. Since you mention baby, there might be mild sedation involved which is also safe. Please make sure that you are aware of the indication of LP.If you are asking as an academic query, there are known complications associated with LP ( very very uncommon).1) Introducing infection through LP into CSF2) Large bore needle may cause some CSF leak into epidural space which may lead to low pressure headache ( in case of babies that means innescent crying)3) Puncturing high above in wrong anatomical location can cause damage to cord or roots...which can lead from temporary to permanent weakness to shooting pain in legs. ( These are very uncommon and seen with inexperienced hands)4) There can be some bleeding from puncture site...usually controlled with pressure.5) Some pain at the puncture site if Local anaesthetic is used inadequately.6) Wrong indication. LP is absolutely contraindicated if there is an intracranial mass, this can lead to catastrophe event. It is a very common routine procedure and these side effects are very very rare. So if it's indicated , it is sometimes the most important and useful diagnostic and at times therapeutic test.Hope this helps.

How long does a spinal tap last?

I have to have a spinal tap. The doctor says I have to be there 2 hours prior. How long does the actual procedure last. I took the day off that day but my fiance has to work at 3 and the procedure starts at 1. He is the only one that I have to drive me home afterwards. Will they keep me there for a little while after or should I reschedule for an earlier time?

How bad is a Spinal Tap or Lumbar Puncture?

I am a nurse who has assisted at numerous LPs and have had the procedure several times myself.  The worst part is the anxiety associated with someone sticking a needle into your spinal column.  Although there are exceptions, the feeling is one of pressure, not pain.
