i'm really interested in McCarthyism. I've read the crucible, and loved it. does anybody know of other plays that are like the crucible, or involve McCarthyism.

Why do authors use similes?

Because it makes the writing (and reading) more interesting and lyrical.  Similes spark your reader's imagination while getting the information across. They help the reader 'see' the scene in their heads. You don't always have to use the word 'like' but it often works.  A simile is really just a comparison and often  you can make them in a more subtle way for a better read.  Different types comparisons are  demonstrated below. Her marriage was a mess.     "Her marriage was like a beach after a storm; messy and tangled."Her eye were the color of  blue corn flowers.          "She had Bette Davis eyes."The young man reminded her of a matador.     "He reminded her of a Spanish matador with his dark hair hitting his collar, and his muscular chest showing through his open shirt."The full moon rose slowly over the trees.  "The full moon rose slowly over the trees and rained down beams of light through the branches, like a mother ship searching for her workers. "

What is the difference between Puritans and Pilgrims?

Despite their similarities, and the fact that they arrived in America within a decade of each other, there are several differences. While the Pilgrims were Separatists, the Puritans were non-separating Congregationalists -- they believed the Church of England was the one true church and they were loyal to England, but not in the way they worshipped. They believed that "New England" worship and practice would be an example for Old England and the world. The Pilgrims were few in number. 102 sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower. About half died the first winter. The Puritans came by the thousands, indeed forty to fifty thousand eventually came. By 1776, 75% of the American population were of Puritan roots. The Pilgrims came earlier in 1620, the Puritans came later in 1629-30.The Pilgrims for the most part were of the poor class. Not all on the Mayflower came for religious reasons, some came for better economic opportunities in the New World. The Puritans were primarily upper middle class. The Pilgrims were not terribly well educated, while the Puritans typically were. Over 100 of the first Puritans to come to America had been educated at Oxford or Cambridge. Within 6 years of landing, the Puritans founded the first college, Harvard, in Cambridge (Boston). The Pilgrims settled in Plymouth. The Puritans settled in Salem and Boston.Pilgrims had names like William Bradford and William Brewster, and Myles Standish. The Puritans had names like John Endicott, John Winthrop.Ultimately, however, both colonies united to form Massachusetts following the Puritans having their charter revoked in 1689.

How does the quality of life compare between San Francisco and Oakland?

Quality of Life? That’s really really open and subjective. What parts of life do you mean? The number of homeless? The presence of eateries, bars, coffee shops? Access to education, medical, libraries, museums. The cost of living? Hopefully you are aware that they are just minutes apart by bus or BART and you might ought be talking about San Francisco as compared to the East Bay as “Oakland” is more of a political designation and very often you’d be hard pressed to tell which East Bay City you are in. Many people frequent both areas on a regular basis. If you want really a broad brush comparison, the homeless are everywhere. San Francisco has more of a reputation as a cultural center even though the East Bay probably has just as many educational institutions including UC Berkeley and a number of museums and art galleries. Personally the big difference that I’m aware of is money and the cost of living, i.e. housing. If I were a young artist type then Oakland/East Bay would be the place. There was/is a strong “maker” community in S.F. but the TechShop closed for many reasons including costs. Whereas “The Crucible” in Oakland is still going strong. If I were trying to do something innovative and didn’t have millions backing me then Oakland is the preferred choice. I “THINK” the same is true of people who are into circus arts such as trapeze etc. So the areas are close and share a great deal but figure that Oakland is the low rent side of the Bay Area. An example is that a friend of mine bought a house in Oakland, maybe 7–8 years ago (I don’t remember). But it was a slightly blighted (urban planner speak) and he got the two story for USD 50–60k and then as he qualified as a first time buyer got an additional $10K off. At that time you couldn’t do that in S.F. and can’t do it in Oakland today either. He bicycles everywhere in Oakland. And his street is gentrifying rather quickly. So my point is that everything is changing on a daily basis. But for the moment the East Bay is (slightly?) less expensive.
