Server connection is essential because whatssapp runs over data network not on SMS channel, so it requires centralized server (more like dns server) to connect to other users. It may appear p2p but its not, cause server retain the messages till they are delivered, also when u do a file transfer through whatssapp it uploads file to server first then recipient downloads it, where skype does actual p2p file transfer.
