Skype Wont Recognize My Headset

My new computer won't recognize my headset amp. Please help!?

On my old computer my headset would function just fine. I could adjust the base, treble, headphone volume, my mic volume and other people's volume in a skype call. When I got my new computer however it doesn't even recognize my amp and thinks it's just a regular headset. I have the turtle beach z22 headset and the reason the headset was so expensive was mostly due to the amp that it came with so I would love some help here please and thank you.

P.S. on this new computer it sends me to realtek hd audio manager everytime I plug in something in the audio or earphone jack unlike my old one.

I'm using Ubuntu on a Dell laptop, and it doesn't seem to recognize my headset's microphone. What can I do?

The laptop is probably using the built-in lid mounted microphone, and doesn't use the headset's one. To change this, open the Sound Preferences dialog box by clicking System->Preferences->Sound. Click on the Input tab of the resulting window and you'll be able to select between sound input sources using the Connector dropdown selection. Connect your headset and flip through the available devices in that selection, and you'll be able to discover when the headset's microphone is selected using the Input Level indicator. Once you select the correct input source, make a test Skype call to ensure your selection is correct.

Is there a way to eliminate background noise from Skype? I work from home and my neighbors dogs bark, and so this is my main problem.

I’ve used Skype (Skype for Business, if we’re being picky) extensively - it was my main phone at my last job, and I must have spent thousands of hours on Skype calls in that time.I have the luxury of being in a fairly quiet house, but my problem with noise came when I was in work - we had an open plan office, so other people’s conversations were a potential source of noise when I was on a call. The thing that I learned through using Skype extensively is that it’s all down to your headset. You are using a headset, aren’t you?If you’re not using a headset, the chances are that you’ll have some sort of fairly wide-field microphone, which will pick up every little sound within half a mile of your computer. And you don’t want that.Headset microphones are designed to pick up sound at a fairly close distance. Try positioning your headset microphone so that you can almost touch it with your lips. If you get too much in the way of wind sounds, move it further away, but in general for noise rejection, closer is better. Some headset microphones care about which direction they’re facing in, too. If you’ve got a foam windshield on there, take it off and have a look - are there holes in one side of the microphone capsule? If so, make sure they’re pointing straight at your mouth rather than at the ceiling or the floor. Finally, once you’ve got the microphone in the best place, you can try altering the microphone volume in Skype’s settings. If you have this turned up, then it’ll amplify everything it captures, including distant dog barks. Turn it down a bit, and everything gets quieter. Set it to a level where you’re still audible, but the unwanted noises are quieter.

Why doesn't my headphone's mic work when I plug in the speaker(green port)?

The microphone is not connected. It is shorted to ground. You computer has an output (the green plug) that sends audio into your headphones. This port has no input capabilities. The computer likely has a separate input (often pink colored) that receives the incoming sound from the microphone. Plugged into the green port, you can still use the headphones because of the pin configuration of the plug. Notice that the plug on your headset has four contacts instead of the common three, but the first two, (the tip and the first ring,) are exactly where they would be on a regular, three pin headphone plug. The tip and first ring are the two signals for your left and right headphones. On a three pin headphone plug, the rest of the connector is one big contact. It is the ground for both. So, when you plug in this four pin connector, left and right headphones both work, but the two other connections are shorted together, serving as  the ground for both headphones. The computer has no fourth connection for the microphone, so it doesn't go anywhere. Notice the difference between the two connectors in this picture. This is why the headphone portion still works. Unfortunately, the pink microphone port is wired on a computer the same way as a headphone port, making the assumption that you are using a three pin connector, so there is no accommodation for the separate third and fourth pin. You might have noticed that plugging the headset into the microphone port, you may get a bit of crude audio by shouting into the actual headphones. That is why this is the case. You would have to make up or purchase an adapter like the one Arno Brevoort mentions to pull this fourth contact and the ground to another plug for the pink (microphone) port on your computer.
