Sleep Medications That Work

Sleep medications that work?

What kind of sleep medications work that can be bought at a store? Please only answer if you've tried it and it helped you sleep. I've been really depressed lately and all I want to do is sleep but I can't. I've tried xanax, zzzquil, nyquil, and melatonin. The xanax worked but now I'm out of it and it's difficult to get ahold of, lol. Nothing else has really done anything and I tried taking large doses of every one. I honestly just want something that'll knock me out for several hours whenever I take it. I'm 17 so I can't go and buy alcohol or anything. Has anybody tried the "Dream Water" sleep shots? Are they any good?

Thanks for any suggestions, I'll choose a best answer. :)

What are some prescription sleeping medications that work well?

Unfortunately many sleep medications are differently effective in different people. A single Trazodone in the evening would keep me drowsy and “hungover” well into the next day. Diazepam gave me nightmares. Three milligrams Melatonin is a typical dose in over-the-counter medications, but 0.2 milligrams was found to be effective for many people. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is cheap and available without a prescription in the U.S., but some people, under some conditions, get the opposite effect, making them restless and edgy rather than sleepy. I’ve found Valerian root and it’s extracts to be variable and unreliable. Hops can induce drowsiness, but is not very strong. I presently live in Colorado, and my favorite sleep medication is cannabis. Even if I do too much and am sleepy the next morning, it is never an unpleasant experience.

Medication that's good for sleeping that doesn't make you gain weight?

I'm bipolar and now cannot sleep on my own without the aid of a medication. I'm currently on a 100mg of Elavil and it works great for sleep for me. I get tired at a reasonable time and stay asleep for about 8-9 hrs without any interruptions. I also feel great the next morning and not overtired. However, I've noticed it's put a ton of weight on me over the last 4-5 months. Like 20-30 lbs. I wanted to know if anyone can recommend a medication that's not only good for sleep, but won't put weight on me or be physically addicting or something that will mess with my other meds. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated =)

What can you do if all the normal sleep suggestions don't work? Is medication your only option?

Indirect methods to put you to sleep are relaxation methods, darkening of your bedroom, drinking warm milk at bedtime, etc.Direct methods of putting you asleep calm your brain directly. Melatonin is the first step you should think of. Melatonin production by the pineal gland peaks at the age of 8. This likely is the reason why teenagers and adults alike often have a problem to fall asleep. But the other fact is that cortisol, the stress hormone, is the opponent of melatonin. So, if you have a lot of stress in your life, you will suppress melatonin production and have a problem falling asleep. When you take 3 mg melatonin 30 minutes before you go to sleep, you normalize the melatonin/cortisol balance in favor of melatonin.3. If your mind is still stressed, you may want to add 500 mg of valerian root, which calms your mind directly and helps you to block out any stressful thoughts. Should you wake at 2 AM or 3 AM you could repeat 3 mg of melatonin +/- 500 mg of valerian root. The effect of both melatonin and valerian root wears off within 3 to 4 hours, so you should wake up in the morning refreshed, without a hangover.4. If point 3 and 4 do not work for you, I suggest you see your physician for a sleeping pill. But keep in mind that sleeping pills are often habit forming and can interfere with your memory as a side effect.

How do sleeping pills work?

Sleeping pills work by sending a message to the central nervous system that it is time for sleep. The body responds with the appropriate yawning and stretching, and sleep ensues shortly after. The person remains asleep until the next morning. Various types of sleeping pills exist, with differing functions and purposes. XD

What sleeping medication is stronger than temezepam (restoril)?

What sleeping medication is stronger than temezepam (restoril)?

All of them, if given in a high enough dose, will be more potent than any other. Any medication that you choose can be given at a dose that will put you to sleep, although the dose may be dangerous or cause side effects, so we don't do that.

What is the best sleeping medicine that actualy works.?

They all are somebody's favorite. We are different from one another in every possible way: height, intelligence, preferences, eye color, etc. So, it should be no surprise that some people are susceptible to a medication while others are resistant, and this can only be discovered at the present time by trial and error. Some will say temazepam is too strong but Ambien has no effect, and others will say the opposite, or that only Lunesta works. The practical answer is that you may need to try a few before you're happy.

Some options include the following:

Proprietary (no generics available) prescrition drugs include:

1. Ambien (or Ambien CR)
2. Lunesta
3. Sonata
4. Rozerem

None of those is inexpensive. They're all pricey. Cheaper prescription drugs that come as generic drugsinclude

5. temazepam (Restoril)
6. trazadone (Desiryl)

Reasonable OTC (over the counter) choices are

7. melatonin
8. Benedryl (diphenhydramine) - usually 25 -50 mg

Good luck

How do sleeping pills work?

Depends on the sleeping pill you're asking about! Most benzodiazepine-based drugs (Xanax, Valium) and nonbenzodiazepines (Ambien, Lunesta) work by enhancing the effects of a particular neurotransmitter (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain.  They act to cause rapid relaxation and a sedative effect, that usually leads to sleep.People often think that they can take sleeping pills and awake to find out they're groggy.  This is because the pills do not induce REM-based sleep that is truly restful.  They are also highly addictive, particularly amongst the eldery who tend to trust a doctor's prescription for them without inquiry. Sleeping pills should not be taken for longer than 2-3 months (ideally not more than 2-3 weeks), as the lack of proper sleep seems to 'cause bizarre side effects (like dreaming while awake), as well as an increased risk of falling asleep while driving.Other sleep aids include naturopathic remedies: St. John's Wort, Chamomille Tea, and Melatonin, as well as simply consuming a glass of warm milk before bed.SOURCE: lots of personal experience with elderly. I'm not a doctor.
