In some cultures snakes are highly regarded and symbolize the ability to transcend into higher levels of consciousness or into areas of knowledge that exist outside perceived time and space. In the pre-Christian days, snakes were considered symbols of fertility, healing, and nurturing (the healing serpent representing a god). Post Adam and Eve, snakes are often considered symbols of temptation and evil, anger, and envy. Snakes emerging out of the ground may represent your unconscious or repressed materials coming to your conscious mind. Freud thought that the snake was a phallic symbol. It is amazing how many people have snake dreams! Most snake dreams seem to be disturbing and they leave the dreamer feeling anxious and afraid. There are no simple interpretations to the snake dreams. Each dreamer must consider their own situation and all of the details of the dream. Sometimes snakes may be phallic symbols and other times they represent negativity in our lives that hampers our progress and constantly threatens us. In the long run the snake may be a positive symbol; it may represent difficulties that lead us to the center of personality and result in feelings of completeness.

I had a dream of a snake fighting a cat. I haven't dreamt of a snake in many years. I rarely dream of animals.

I had a dream last night; I was sitting a chair and a small snake slithered on the floor under my chair. I presumed it was a young snake. It was gold with collars, I think red, like a coral snake. I was afraid at first and wanted to strike in defense, but realizing it was a young snake, I let go by. Then a kitten came by. It was gold with stripes like a tabby cat. At fisrt te kitten was only playing with the snake. Then it started to get too rough. I thought the snake will bite the kitten if I don't intervine right now. I reached down, but before I could reach them, the little snake struck the kitten. The kitten began biting the snake. I reached in to pull them apart and got clawed by the cat and reoeatedly bitten by the snake. Only the fangs or claws never penetrated my skin. Wierd,vivid, and has bothered me alot. I have a lot of stress going on right now. I'm moving, annual performance evaluation, dental appointment, long distance family issues, too much to list. Input anyone?

What does it mean when you dream of a cat and snake together?

Ok first lets understand what each of those animals symbolize–
a snake in all religions (except for any form of christianity) symbolizes transformation, which means life and death, healing, or change.
a cat is often thought to symbolize mystery, or a part of yourself you don't know about. The cat can be a symbol of sexuality, femininity, prosperity and power. A cat is also an independent animal, and in your dream you may be associating yourself or someone else with these characteristics. Usually the dream is telling you about yourself and not others. Note * In the christian religion both of these animals are demonic, dark forces* so if you are religious (im not) it means that you feel like you have sinned, let satan in, etc;

So now that we know the meanings, its time to interpret it.
The fact that you feared the snake means that 'subconsciously you are facing change, or losing something that makes you uncomfortable. Because the snake wasn't able to be locked in the cage can mean that something from your past is haunting you, or this "change" you are facing is not in your control.
I don't know if you are a girl or a guy, but the cat has to do with a figure in your life, or an emotion in yourself that you feel is an escape, or a reliable watchdog from the transformation occurring.

This all could be true... but heres the weird thing... I am currently studying human psychology and the subconscious mind. For a data collection assignment I had to talk to 20 different people and have them record dreams that they had over a 30 day period. 16/20 of these people had dreams of snakes, and A LOT of people on yahoo answers are asking questions about snake dreams.
I believe that this dream about the snake is infesting itself globally.
Even though humans are very different then other animals, we still react as one, like crows or horses do when they feel a big change coming. So this could be personal, or this could be a small fraction of a spread instinct that something bigs happening or coming.

-( it sounds like a cheesy line from a movie, but there is proof all around us that we are effected before events happen)

Is it good to see snakes in dreams?

Certainly not. Many people say, snakes in dreams symbolize “rejuvenation” but snakes are really a danger sign of first order.A snake is a poisonous, frightening, unreliable, horrific, slimy and rarely seen dangerous animal. Practically no one keeps snakes as pets or treats them affectionately. As a rule, a real snake is instinctively treated as danger. Not just humans, many mammals react violently and/fearfully to snakes. We generally call a dangerous & unreliable person, a snake.My view is, snakes in dreams indicate dangers, troubles and problems. People undergoing stressful times frequently see masses of snakes, not just one or two. Your dream thus could mean, you think your path of life is full of pitfalls & dangers. As said, you could be undergoing stress in your life. Snakes also appear in dreams when one has mental conditions like depression, anxiety and OCD.I suggest, you review your life situation in light of above. If you have reasons to believe you need some professional advice regarding say, depression or anxiety, do not neglect it. Finally, if that was just a one-off dream, you may safely ignore it. If the theme recurs, you must take it seriously.There is another aspect to this also. Frequently dreams indicate bodily problems too (prodromal). See if you are suffering from any intestinal infestations.
