So My Mom Spoils My Dog Which Leads To My Dog Always Sleeping With Her. But Lately My Dog Has Been

New dog killed my son's pet bird. Advice please?

So I've adopted a new dog recently and to me and my family he was the perfect dog! Housetrained, quiet, playful, didn't climb. He did have separation anxiety and got into the trash, but that was fine to us since he was new to the house.
We also had a pet bird, a cockatiel who was my son's pet for a little over 5 years. My daughter had always wanted a dog, though, since she couldn't interact too much with the bird, and after much thought, we got a dog! I didn't think too much of it. we lived with three dogs and our bird before when we moved in with my mom for a while. Pit bulls who were calm around the bird, never left alone in the same room. We just closed the door whenever we left the bird in the room by himself.
Well, that's exactly what we did with our new dog. We just closed the door! I guess when one of us left the room, we forgot to close it all the way, and the new dog got inside when we were at the store. We got back, our beloved bird was dead. We had a little funeral for him and everyone cried. We know it wasn't the dog's fault. He was just acting on instinct.
Only now, my son refuses to interact with the dog. He's become quiet and started staying in his room. The longer we keep the dog, the longer the he's going to be attached to our family. I feel like he'd do better in a family where every member loves him, I just feel awful with the idea of putting him back in a cage in a shelter confused after a week of being free (it's a no kill shelter).
Any advice on this?

Is there really a way to tell if dog bread ?

As to your question, you can tell if your female is in heat from looking at her vulva, if it is swollen then probably yes she is in heat. You can see a little blood sometimes, when she sits or lies down for instance, but since they usually clean themselves it can be hard to tell unless you look to see if her sex organ is swollen. A dog is in heat usually twice a year, and it lasts around 3 weeks. The first week to 10 days they aren't receptive usually to letting a male dog mount them, but the last week or two they begin to allow it. That is also the period in which they are most likely for conception to occur.

Remember, it's a lot of work to have puppies, they require a lot of attention for at least 2-3 months. Remember there are vet visits, shots, deworming, and a lot of cleaning up after them. You should probably check out some web-sites, or get a book to help walk you through it.

One other thing, yes, we probably don't need another bunch of dogs brought into the world, but my god every question about dog breeding gives 10x the responses about spaying/neutering instead of breeding. OK, fine, I do agree as my dogs have always come from shelters or people that needed to find a home. HOWEVER the only 'right' dogs are purebred ones is simply wrong. A dog can be a wonderful pet even if it's a mutt! Yes, it's true! The dog doesn't even know if they are purebred or not, they will love you just the same! For gods sake there are people who want a dog and can't afford the $1000 and up that papered dogs sell for. I would recommend anyone go to a shelter, but many people want a puppy and don't mind if it is not registered.

So last thing, don't knock someone that is being responsible and caring, asking for advice. Knock those that run 'puppy mills' and the like. I'd much rather get a puppy from an at-home 'breeder' than a lot of those papered pooches for thousands of dollars which perpetuate puppy exploitation and selling them like commodities!

Is it normal for my dog to sleep a lot during the day?

i have my first dog, a yellow lab, named duke. he is 1 1/2 years old. i am home all day with him, and i noticed that he sleeps a lot, and doesn't want to go outside too much, unless i am out there. is this normal? he checked out of the humane society with a clean bill of health and is up to date with his shots...my friends gave him to me, and they took him to the vet recently for a check up and he was declared healthy by them too.
that said, would this be normal dog behavior? he is playful and happy, eats a lot and drinks a lot...i have never owned a dog before, so i am not sure if they are supposed to sleep this much. i have had cats, and i know they sleep most of the day, and he is sleeping as much as a cat would. it's also really hot out...
i hate to sound silly, but i was just wondering. thank you.

Why does my dog suddenly like to cuddle and sleep with me?

My Pomeranian is a very sweet dog to the people he knows. He is always very happy, especially when food is involved. But he never cared to cuddle or sleep with me until recently. He would always sleep in a hamper at night and he would never come when I called. I am the one who gives punishment when he's been bad and he seemed to like my mom a little more because of it. She always spoils him with people food behind my back so I just assumed that was why he didn't like me. But now he comes when I call him (normally) and he's been sleeping with me every night. Why has he suddenly changed when I haven't really done anything differently?

My dog bit my mom today...?

Sounds like your mom probably smacked/hit or did something to make him snap.

Don't ever kick your dog they have a name for something like that.. What was it.. Oh yeah Animal Abuse.

What makes everyone think your abusive? You just told us you kicked your dog across the room.

Now I don't know if this is a Troll questions beings that No responsible dog owner would EVER kick there dog especially across a room.

What are you supposed to do to stop dog aggression: Train him. But it sounds like you have never got him proper training maybe because your impatient and get mad when the dog doesn't do what its told I don't know but if you don't train him and he "Attacks" someone on a street while on a walk and they sue your dog will probably have to be put down. So either A: Train it. B: Give him to someone who will actually spend the time to train him and not "Kick" the dog. Or C: Your dog loses his life.

-EDIT-
I kinda lost my temper too especially when I saw " Kicked that d@mn dog across the room".

It's aightt I sorta get were your coming from I wouldn't want some random a$$ person off the Internet judging me either.

Even though your dog was happy and following you around again doesn't mean it wont remember you kicking it though. If you keep slapping, kicking or whatever he'lll start to act like an abused animal and people wonder what's going on so I'vee looked up a sight to help you train your dog to stop being aggressive mostly for the dog's safety.

Now your dog's not going to get the training process down pat but you have to keep going and not get mad and hit the dog. Dog training takes a lot of patience and time. If you can't do it I would hire a Professinal dog trainer, I'm sure they can.

My dog won't eat her food, but she'll beg for ours. Why? She'll whine and go crazy for human food, but when it comes to dog food, she avoids eating it. It's as if she knows her food doesn't taste as good as ours.

If she doesn't eat her own food and she's not starving to death, I'll have to draw the conclusion that her strategy is working and that you are being manipulated into feeding her your food.......? ;-) Let me tell you a true story.I'd had a very shy dog here for two weeks to work with her. The day after she was back with her owners they called me. I wondered slightly worried if everything was ok...?"Yes, yes, she's fine. She's really doing much better. But I have to ask: since she's come back she doesn't beg at the table any more! We've been trying to fix that for two years and never managed; how could you make her stop begging at the table in just two weeks??""I didn't feed her from the table.""Oh..... Ok... We'll try that."True story. :-) In my experience fussy eaters who turn their noses up at all types of dog food have become this way for two reasons:They are given plenty of other foods and treats instead. They are not given enough exercise to work up a proper appetite. So the solution is, as is usually the case :-), with the owner. You need to stop giving her lots of other unhealthy food and stick to your guns with tasty, good quality dog food as her only option, and you need to make sure that she gets plenty of exercise and activity so that she is hungry when she comes back and you present her with the food. I also recommend feeding her before you eat, so that she has the stomach full when you're eating.Good luck!
