Why are so many people opposed to genetically modified food?

It is a combination of things.1. Fear of the new and untested.2. Confusion about what has been modified and how it has been modified.3. Lack of transparent publicly visible testing, or at a minimum, large sample post-market monitoring of its effects (big data opportunity here).4. Public willingness to believe rumors and opinions which are no stronger than the safety claims of the GMO foods.5. The food and agriculture industry's bad track record of taking the flavor, texture and ripeness out of fruits and vegetables in the pursuit of automated picking, handling and the length and uncertainty of the time the products will be in the distribution pipeline.6. Misleading behavior at the retail level including use of terms like "vine ripened", false ripening by use of chemicals that cause the color to resemble ripe, use of tailored spectrum illumination over fruit and vegetable bins and use of colored packaging materials intended to make unripe product look ripe. In short misleading from start to finish. And GMO takes a hit for being associated with this because the bad retail behavior stems from the things listed in 5. which GMO seems to be continuing in a higher tech way.7. The food and agriculture industry's bad track record on the use of insecticides and weed killers that may affect human health even though some GMO such at BT in corn is intended to eliminate the need for some of the spraying.8. Apparent carelessness and naivete about the ease with which modified genes in pollen can escape into surrounding crops including organic and intentionally non-GMO crops potentially permanently contaminating the gene pool or making them unmarketable in the latter case.9. The association of GMO with hybrid crops that don't breed true in the second generation tying the food supply to the price of patented gene lines.10. GMO IP holders who have sued farmers for using patented gene based seed of their own where 8. above does not hold. Protecting something that cost a lot to develop but none the less making themselves look bad. Here are links to some articles on 8. and 10. - Google So, the GMO industry is under doubt, mistrust and attack partly of its own making, partly for historical reasons and partly because of human nature.

Why was Disney's River Country abandoned?

Best guess goes with why the park closed in the first place... cost and disease. Most in the know speculate that the reason it closed was due to the water system that allowed a dangerous amoeba to live and thrive in its waters. Disney didn't want anyone becoming seriously ill at their park where they could be blamed.

And by the time it closed, Disney had 2 other, far larger waterparks with better closed filtration systems.

As for not demolishing it...not in the Disney budget...which are carefully kept-to each year. Disney owns the property, and there's no real reason to go through the expense of removing the old park, and all the environmental restoration that would be required by state and federal laws.

Many businesses and homeowners have that secret place on their property, the eyesore they don't really need to clean-up currently, so they don't go through the time and hassle to do so.

What support did Japan provide when Hurricane Katrina stuck Louisiana?

The US government has a webpage that details the Japanese contributions to Katrina aid. Here's part of what the page says:

Japan Proves Truly "A Friend Indeed" After Hurricane Katrina

Japanese government, companies, individuals send assistance to victims

By Jane Morse
Washington File Staff Writer

Washington -- If the saying "a friend in need is a friend indeed" is true, Japan is one of the best friends the United States ever could have to provide support while so many Americans are suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Japanese private citizens and the government alike have sent a virtual tsunami of assistance to the victims of Katrina, which devastated 90,000 square miles along the U.S. Gulf Coast in August. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes and hundreds lost their lives.

Japan has pledged more than $1.5 million in private donations. The government of Japan has donated $200,000 in cash to the American Red Cross and some $800,000 in relief supplies -- from blankets to generators -- already are arriving to aid the most needy. Japanese firms with operations in the United States have donated some $12 million in total, including Honda Motor Corporation ($5 million), Hitachi ($1 million) and Nissan (more than $750,000).

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo was overwhelmed by the generosity of one Japanese individual -- Takashi Endo -- who donated $1 million from his personal funds to Katrina relief efforts. Endo said he was moved when, during a business trip to London, he saw a televised report about a mother separated from her children in the chaos of the flooding in New Orleans. The story so disturbed him he could not sleep that night; the next morning he resolved to do something to help.

Yuji Takahashi, president and chief executive officer of the Japan Petroleum Exploration Company Ltd., which has operations off the coast of Louisiana, donated $100,000 to U.S. federal government hurricane relief efforts. Takahashi said that when he learned of the destruction caused by the hurricane, he felt as if his own family had been affected.

Is the US military sending troops to help with Italy earthquake?

The breadth of Humanitarian Assistance starts with the State Department via USAID organization OFDA. They go through a few steps of determination first based off of if the host country can handle it with their own resources, and they ask for help. Don't get me wrong, the military would love to help, but in this case; Italy is a modern and well equipped nation, and we could potentially add to the problem. In the diplomacy back rooms, we more than likely offered to assist, and Italy politely turned us down. You do see our assistance world wide and it is via these style of agreements does that country take as necessary, and the Military option is usually the last. So mostly it's going to be a pretty big catastrophe like the operation DAMIYAN after typhoon Haiyan slammed the Philippines, or the 2004 Tsunami hitting a plethora of SE Asian nations. The nice obscure one was an earthquake in Iran. Iran did ask for our help, and short of a big military push; they got some American support. Mind you that Iran is a modern and well-equipped nation; it was a specific resource that was needed. As tragic as the earthquake in Italy was, they have a good control on the ground. If it turns out they need some cash, the US will ante up.
