Some Small Tax Questions

Ok, tax Question!?

Ok In 2018 I made $26.79 a hour and then $30 a hour on the weekends. I had to be off from November-December due to having back surgery. I ended up bring home pay 33,200. And I owe $915 in taxes. My boyfriend however made $16 a hour last year and grossed $33,900 and received a $1,200 tax return. My question is, how is it right that I ended up making more during the year total, but brought home less then he did! And we worked the same amount of hours during the year! We both our “single” with no kids. So I’m so ticked off right now. Why should I work and “make more” money a hour if I’m not going to see that money. When I could get an easier job and make less and then end up making more??? Im not complaining about how much I made. Yes I made a decent living. But after medical bills and such I’m still playing catch up. But I don’t think that this is fair, because it just proves how screwed the system is.

A couple tax questions?

This is something I've always been a little curious about, so I figured I'd ask.

Do any people who have had legal issues have to pay extra when it comes time for taxes to be filed? I'm referring to "common criminals" such as sex offenders, people convicted of abusive acts, those currently on probation/parole, etc.

Also, while on the topic of taxes, how are taxes different this season after the changes that were made? If someone only works certain times of the year... like a "seasonal" job, then they usually draw unemployment or something the months they aren't actively working, would they receive a refund, or owe money? Let's say they also don't have a spouse, kids or other dependents - how would that change things? How would the situation change if this same seasonal worker DID have at least a spouse and/or one child?

Final tax question - how does it work for veterans? I know that active duty members are sometimes eligible for nontaxable combat pay, but what about those who HAVE served... just aren't active duty anymore? Do veterans get any "automatic" refunds or compensation each year just because they did in fact serve their country? Since I'm not military or a veteran, I wouldn't know, but I certainly think they should get something if they don't.

Again, none of this really applies to me personally... I was just curious about how different scenarios played out when it came to taxes.

Tax Exempt Question?

Im trying to start a small business where I buy from online auctions and resell. I have registered for an EIN and when I try to register my business it is asking if I want to register sales tax and then asking for my estimated monthly payment for sales tax is? I was under the impression that being tax exempt is free. Is this the wrong section or what should I do? Im in michigan if that helps. Thanks

I need some help with small business questions?

1. All of the following are advantages of a partnership EXCEPT:
a. partnerships have the greatest ability to accumulate capital of all of the forms of ownership.
b. partnerships avoid double taxation since the partnership itself is not subject to federal taxation.
c. partnerships offer the ability to combine the management and business skills of two or more
d. people in a complementary and powerful fashion.
e. partnerships are relatively easy and inexpensive to establish.

2. obably the most important reason to have a partnership agreement is that:
a. t determines how the partnership and the partners will pay taxes.
b. it states the purpose and the location of the business.
c. t resolves potential sources of conflict that, if not addressed in advance, could later result in partnership battles and dissolution of an otherwise successful business.
d.. it identifies the name of the partnership and protects the name from infringement by others.

3. The key to choosing the right form of ownership is:
a. irrelevant since choosing a form of ownership is merely a technicality and has little impact on the business and its owner(s
b. forming either an S corporation or a limited liability company since they are the only forms that offer owners liability protection.
c. envisioning where you business will be in 10 years.
d. understanding the characteristics of each form and knowing how they effect your business and personal circumstances.

Simple tax question please?

Hello, I will keep the numbers small and easy in this example. Lets say I do a job for someone and go through a broker. The broker pays me $1000 for the job so that is what is sent to my bank account. However on the work order you see that the job paid $1200, the broker took $200, and paid me the $1000. Come tax time, do I report I made $1200 and paid $200 to the broker as an expense? Or do I just report I made $1000?

Self employment tax question?

I have started this transcription job from home part time. I will probably make around 2000 dollars this year, if that. I am sure I will have to file my own taxes, but it almost seems silly for such a small amount? Last year, i stopped working in Feb. bc I had my daughter and stay at home with her now. So, for Jan-Feb 2010 I only made 1500. This was with my actual job though, that deducted my taxes. Thing is..when i filed, i got every penny back that I put it.. bc it was such a tiny amount of money i made for the year.

So...why should I have to pay in making only 2k ? is it different when its self employment? And, how does the IRS ever know you are self employed, especially if you dont have a large business ect? My boyfriend usually claims me as dependent bc he supports me and our daughter.

Any knowledge about this stuff?

What questions should I ask a CPA for accounting/tax services for a small family office during initial consultation?

You should ask the following questions:What is their education and experience the accounting profession. How long has their business been around? Keep in mind that just because an accounting firm has only been open a few short years, that may not mean anything as all accountants start out working for other companies for a few years. So a firm may only have been open 5 years, but the CPA may have 20 years in the profession. What is their experience with your industry. Just because they do not have extensive experience with your industry should not be a reason to not hire the firm. CPA’s are highly intelligent and can pick up the nuances that affect your industry and can also bring other experience to bear to help you. What work needs to be done. How frequently will the work be performed? Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annually, Annually? If they have to do write up (they are the ones that record your books and records into an accounting system), then you want the write up to be done more frequently than any other accounting work. If this needs to be done all at once, it takes a lot longer to get your year end financials/tax returns done than if they had been updated throughout the year. Doing a month of write up work after year end can be accomplished a lot faster than trying to get a full 12 months done. How will the work be staffed? Who will be doing the majority of each type of work that your engagement requires? How is the fee structured? Is it time and materials or is it a fixed fee for the annual engagement.Ask about turnaround time to get work product back. If you are supposed to provide them information on the 10th of the month, and they commit to a one week turnaround, make sure you hold yourself and them to that schedule. Keep in mind that if there is a delay on providing the accountant with items to work on, this can make them unable to meet any original turnaround time. If you take an extra week to give them initial information or additional requested information, it does not mean that they will be able to drop everything and start work on your project.
