Someone Stole My Debit Card Information

Stolen Debit Card Information?

Today I received an e-mail saying I had insufficient funds for a purchase. I haven't used my debit card since 11/19 at 711. I went online and checked my statements and it showed a purchase for history channel shop for $33.90. It said exactly: CHECK CRD PURCHASE 11/28 DA AETN SHOP DAI shop hist CA. Does the CA mean that it was done in California, or is that just where the history channel shop headquarters is? I live in Florida.

I've only had about $6 bucks in this account since 11/20 when I paid my car insurance. So, they basically chose to steal money from someone who didn't have it.

I decided to look at my mail (Wells Fargo) and I opened a letter saying that a request for a new debit card occurred a couple of weeks ago. I didn't make this request. I usually don't open my mail since I look at my account info on the Wells Fargo website. They hadn't mentioned this online (yes, I know I should have opened my mail). I called WF and told them, they canceled the transaction and I submitted a claim. I also said I would prosecute the person who did this (would that cost money?).

How would someone go about stealing my information like this? How does it work?
The funny thing is, on the view-able online transaction, it says the first few numbers and last few numbers of the card. It matches the card I have in my hand. So does that mean they didn't use the new one that was requested? I don't understand.

I made a purchase from history shop quite a while ago for my dad for Father's Day. Does that have any correlation? Or did someone locally steal my account number (like a waitress or a store)?

I never let anyone use my card and only I know my pin number (but you don't need a pin number online). Since it always asks for the expiration date and the 3-digit number on the back, does that mean someone physically saw my card and wrote it down? Or can you get this info online?

Thanks SO SO SO much for your help. Any help at all is appreciated. I don't understand how this happened at all.

My debit card information was stolen and someone bought something online?

As usual, Kerry has posted information that isn't quite correct regarding debit cards.

If your card has a Visa or Mastercard logo, then it is protected by the same Zero Liability fraud protection as a Visa or Mastercard credit card. Your bank is required, by the merchant agreement, to issue you provisional credit once you notify them of the fraudulent purchases.

Contact your bank, and ask for the fraud department. They will walk you through to process.

Someone stole my Debit Card information! HELP!?

I went to the mall today and spent 100 with my debit card in 3 different stores. I check my bank account online daily to verify the transactions and make sure I stay on budget. Tonight when I did that I almost dropped dead when I saw 3 pending charges in my account for a total of $1000!!!! I have the receipts of the small purchases I made and of course I did not authorized those purchases...they were actually made in a store at a different mall...a store where I have never bought anything at all!
I called the number on my debit card a told the representative that someone stole my card number and were making purchases and she cancelled the card and told me to talk to my bank. I couldn't talk to the bank because they were close. I'm going to go tomorrow with all my receipts and tell them what happened...the transactions appear pending....do you think the bank can stop those payments and secure my money? I'm really scared...that's my rent and my electricity payment...I'm going crazy here!

Someone stole and used my debit card?

Alright so I was at universal studios and I was buying something at a cart using my card, but I guess I missed my wallet or somehow forgot my card, I'm honestly not sure what happened all I know is that must've been the time I lost my card since it was the only time I used it!
That happened last night, and now today I noticed that my card was missing along with about $160... Right away I called my bank and canceled the card and a new one is being made. They said since its debit card they can't do anything about the lost money. But is that really how it is, do I just have to accept that I lost $160?!
Has this happened to anyone, if so, can I call the police and they can trace the charged? I looked and most of them were done on Amazon.com.. Is there any way the police or bank can help trace the orders or do anything to get my money back?
Please help, I'm only 18 with s part time job, so that's a lot of money for me!

Stolen Debit Card Information. Will Bank of America Refund Money?

There is a good chance that BoA will refund your money simply to keep you as a customer.

BUT, they are not required too. Debit cards do not have the same protection from fraud that a credit card does. Credit cards in the USA are generally limited to no more than $50 of losses from fraudulent charges. Debit cards are not limited, so if somebody drains your bank account - too bad for you.

Because of this fact, I strongly encourage people to not use or own debit cards. When my bank discontinued ATM cards, I cut up the debit card they sent me and started paying for everything with a credit card. Even McDonalds takes Visa now, why not? You just need to have the discipline to track what you spend and budget your money and never carry a balance on the card.

Someone stole my moms debit card and used it online?

Somewhere in the bank's records is information about which store sent in that transaction. Maybe the teller couldn't see it, but it has to be there somewhere. I have never seen a transaction on my statement that didn't have some kind of information about the merchant.

If she thinks someone has stolen her information she should call the bank immediately and have that card cancelled. They will send her a new one with a different number and not allow any more charges using the current number.

I have heard that waiters sometimes steal card information when they take the card in the back. That's why I almost always use a credit card rather than a debit card if the card is going out of my sight. I think it's a lot easier to dispute a credit card charge than a debit card transaction because with a debit card the money is already gone out of your account and it's a lot harder to get it back than it is to refuse payment on a credit card charge.

I think it would be hard to prove that a waiter stole the information but the police should be able to track down who used the number to make the fraudulent transaction.

If you give someone your pin to your debit card can you still prosecute them for stealing your money?

You can prosecute them, but the bank will not help you fund money back to your account personally. The bank considers this a lawful responsibility to protect your account from outside person accessing it, therefore your to blame if you gave your account number to someone Else. If your trying to file a fraud claim with the bank, file a police report, and tell the bank your card was stolen, and you don't know how they got the number, otherwise they wont honor the claim, like they DIDN'T honor mine because the people who took my card from me, when i was drunk gave it back to me when i woke up, i foolishly told the bank this and even though it was the truth and i really did get my money stolen, they retracted any credits they put into the account after the investigation and your signed affidavit. Good luck, i'm still paying for this.

Someone stole my ATM card and PIN and withdrew ₹23000 from my account. Is it possible to get the money back?

Report the matter immediately to the bank manager.Block the card without delay.Report to police. No I don’t think there is any hope since it was a cash withdrawal with no trail. You can hope of the guy getting greedy and repeat crime. You must report to police.

My debit cards, while in my possession, were used by someone to purchase gas. How?

Perhaps your debit card information was stolen when you input the information on a public or shared computer because there are ways to make reappear all the information that was input even if you close the browser and logged out from wherever you were logged in or maybe you downloaded some malicious application on your cellphone- Malicious phone applications are applications with the ability to capture, send and record all the data and activity on your phone without your authorization or knowledge and such applications are controlled by people who are able to manipulate data and softwares to steal information.Or another explanation is that somewhere one of the atms where you inserted your card was a skimmer ATM machine. Skimmer ATM's are machines that are programmed to capture and copying all the information about a debit or credit card including the card pin number and the CCV code located on the back of the card and then a new card can be reproduced with all that information and now there are actually two identical copies of the same debit or credit card.Or maybe a restaurant employee stole your debit card when you used your debit card to pay because there are two papers that come out when they swipe your card to pay at a restaurant; one is your copy which only shows 4 to 2 digits of card and the amount charged but the other paper shows your name, your debit card number, the card expiration date, the amount charged and whether it is a visa, master card, American express or discovery card which is enough information for somebody to initiate charges to your debit card.

Can someone steal my money with just my debit card number and my expiration date?

Don't be terrified. The bad news is that they theoryically can access some portion of your bank account. The good news is that there is a law called Regulation E. It covers you on electronic funds transfers. If you haven't alreay, turn your debit card over and call the 800#. Your ban has procedures established for handling this. If someone accesses your money fraudulently, you should be given provisional credit at least within 10 days of written notification. Google Regulation E.
