My laptop's battery drains even when it is in sleep mode. Is it a hardware problem or a software problem?
First of all make sure your laptop is actually in sleep mode.Many times what happens is that the hinge of the laptop has some problem in it which doesn't let the laptop to go into the sleep mode so you're laptop is running without you knowing since you closed the lid believing it is in sleep mode. One way to check it is the power LED usually given on the sides of laptops which starts to blink if your laptop is in sleep mode.If that's not the problem then try putting your computer into hibernate mode whenever you close the lid. That'll take like 5–10 secs more for you laptop to open once you open the lid but it I'll save your work and the battery. This the best option I think or else you'll have to spend money on your laptop for such a small issue which doesn't makes sense at all.

See the reason for this is definitely not your battery being dead. When a normal battery gets fully charged, the computer automatically makes the connection direct. This is just happening all the time in your case.One problem can be that your Graphics memory is going out of range else your RAM is going out of range. What methods have you tried to shut it down? Please be specific. What is its state which allows you to believe that it has not shut down? Is there any way it which it continues to be responsive?If all else fails, just pull the plug (and remove the battery if a laptop). I guarantee it will shut down.

What are reasons for a laptop to suddenly shut off?
All of the reasons?Bad battery. Considering that a laptop battery is made up of smaller, individual batteries... it is actually not uncommon for one or more of the small batteries inside to go bad. This can have the effect of the laptop appearing to have more of a usable charge than it actually has... your laptop is humming along like normal on battery, shows it has maybe 18% charge or so left... and then it just dies.Overheating. If the cooling channel isn't cleaned properly every few months or so, dust can build up between the fan and the heat sink at the end of the cooling pipes from the processor pad. This would mean the fan can't push air through the heat sink, which makes is so the processor cannot shed heat... and the laptop overheats and shuts off.Bad DJ jack connection. This one would typically be seen in conjunction with a laptop battery that won't hold a charge... otherwise if the laptop has a good battery, you might not notice the laptop switching randomly between being connected to the charger and being on battery alone.
