Why do people in the USA hate the DMV so much?

One of my job function is to support some aspects of a DMV, so I'll give you some perspectives and thoughts:1.  DMV's have an atrocious problem with uneven demand.  EVERYBODY shows up at the DMV in about 3 days at the end of the month, and the first two or three days of it.  Go to a DMV in the middle of the month, and you will likely find far shorter lines.  But unlike many private companies, DMV's can't easily scale staffing up and down.  Tough background checks and often old and crappy systems make for long training and onboarding cycles, making temps untenable, and many other functions of government are also month end heavy, making it hard to rotate employees in.2.  NOBODY EVER WANTS TO GO TO THE DMV.  Seriously.  You will never have a customer who's happy to be there.  It's a grating job that wears people down and makes them hate life.  But you have to be there, and so do DMV employees..  Nobody is going to be chipper after all that.  3.  It's a shitty job, usually with modest pay, yet surprisingly complex procedures, software, controls, and policy that basically sucks for employees and customers.  When policy is written or passed by the legislature, nobody cares what impact it will have on the front line at the DMV.  Add 20 minutes to the wait?  Make employees enter data in five separate systems?  Meh, not their problem.  Nobody votes an elected official out of office because the DMV sucks.  (If they did, it would not suck anymore).   Further, The best way to be fired at the DMV is to break policy.  Which is a good way to make damn sure that nobody goes above and beyond to help a customer a little extra.  Being slow won't get you fired, but breaking policy will.4.  Telephone and internet services are afterthoughts constrained by hidebound legal requirements that nobody has bothered to update since 1946, and which make it damn near impossible to deliver quality service to people.  (Some states are much better than others here).5.  DMV's are often run by people whose primary job isn't to run the DMV.  County assessors, some random state agency, whatever...  They have bigger fish to fry and more pressing concerns.  The DMV is simply neglected. At the end of the day, the DMV isn't much worse than customer service at any pseudo-monopoly.  And with no motivation to improve, it won't.

What are some really cheap meals I can make at home?

I hope these help

1 pkg. frozen hash brown potatoes
1 can cream of celery (or chicken) soup
Seasoned salt
1 (16 oz.) container sour cream
2-3 c. Cheddar cheese, grated
1 sm. onion, chopped

(May use hash browns with green peppers.)
Mix all ingredients together, except hash browns. Add them last. Place mixture in baking dish. Top with onion curls (or can substitute bread crumbs drizzled with butter). Bake at 350 degrees for 1 - 1 1/4 hours.

EASY & CHEAP MEATLOAF

1 can chicken or beef vegetable soup
3/4 lb. ground beef
1/2 c. oatmeal
1/2 c. milk
1 onion, chopped
1/2 tsp. salt
Dash of pepper
1 egg, beaten

Put soup in blender or mash fine. Combine all ingredients and put in baking pan or dish. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees or until done. Will be soft but gets firmer as it cools. Great for sandwiches!

How does McKinsey (or Bain/BCG) justify business or first class travel for all of its consultants? Why can some companies do this while others can’t?

I’ll give a different answer: because the consultants really & truly work on the flights. The seat becomes a mobile office. This is not possible in most coach seats - though some ‘economy plus’ make this possible nowadays. The expectation in my office really was that you worked on most flights. Every once in a while someone might nap or watch a movie, but this was the exception to the rule.My observation is based on 7 years working with BCG teams- clearly others might have had a different experience, but I have many data points to back this up.Think about the value of a productive hour and the price premium on the airfare- it isn’t hard to justify if you are truly working. If you have a staff who’s cranking 60–70 hours a week and cutting it close to what is sustainable, losing 4–6 hours of potential productivity is actually a really big deal. Yes, there’s some perk and prestige to this as well, but the utilitarian argument actually holds water. For what it’s worth, I’ll happily take the tradeoff of working less intense hours now and only getting the occasional upgrade.

How do I eat healthily if I am busy, tired, and lazy to cook?

That's not too hard but my personal advice: The most frequent activities in human life is breathing, walking, speaking, eating and pooping. Life is extremely hard for people that are unable to perform these activities so start cooking when you can, nothing is more important than the food you eat. My definition of healthy food is simple: Minimally processed before consumption. If you are busy, tired and lazy to cook, DONT. Start with fruits, vegetables that can be consumed raw such as bananas, avocados, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce. Not filling? How about nuts? Boring? Move up the process chain, you can try pickled stuff like beetroots, cabbage, artichoke. A little bit of protein, you say? Sushi, smoked fish, roast beef. And to wrap things up, wraps or bread! Here's what I do these days: I get wraps, avocado, roasted eggplants or capsicum, tomatoes, smoked salmon, roast beef and lettuce. At lunchtime, I prepare a wrap in 5mins. Chuck in different combinations every day.A little bit of cooking is also not too hard. Try soups, roasted potatoes (look for 'kumpir'), boiled eggs. Requires minimum prep and attention, still delicious and easy to store in the freezer so cook in large quantities. But honestly, spare time for cooking.Best of luck!
