Source For Real Independent Journalism

What is independent journalism?

There are independent newspapers, those not owned by corporations like Gannett, New York Times, News Corp., McClatchy, etc. The independent newspapers are usually family owned.

Depending on where you live and what kind of news you're interested in, there are many sources of independently reported, thoughtfully presented and accurate journalism. Focusing just on news organizations that have international reach, a short list would include The New York Times (Breaking News, World News & Multimedia), the BBC (BBC - Home), the Guardian (News, sport and opinion from the Guardian's US edition | The Guardian) and CNN (CNN - Breaking News, Latest News and Videos). And there are many magazine-type outlets that look at issues in more depth. Decent national, regional and local news organizations exist almost everywhere.

I like GothamSchools for info about NYC schools and Catalyst for Chicago school news.  EdNews Colorado.is solid, too.

What solved yellow journalism?

It was always legal. It became looked down upon in the "respectable" era of journalism, when the emphasis came
to be placed on professional appearance. When "wuxtree, wuxtree, read allaboutit !!!" was not shouted from a kid on the
corner at bulldog editions around the clock. But TV really put
an end to that. Because you could see newsreels in your living room, of what just happened a few minutes ago. And that great STRIKE (when was it? fifties?) that put a dozen papers out of business, and the Post was just spared by
somebody's mercy. So, YES, there's still yellow-journalism.
The newsstands are drowning in it. But maybe thats what
WE ARE.

The ideal source has unimpeachable knowledge of (ideally, first-hand access to the information being provided. You know the source to be trustworthy and are sure that the source has no ulterior motives for providing in information. That's a gold standard that's very difficult to achieve. You're almost always going to be dealing with a source with a bias or a specific motive. As long as you know what that bias is, and that it wouldn't cause the source to fabricate an outright lie, then you're likely in the clear. That's why corroboration front secondary and tertiary on-the-record sources are good.

How do I get into journalism with a BA History degree?

I'm afraid journalism isn't exactly a lucrative career move either—newspapers and publishing companies are firing people by the hundreds.

That being said, if you really want to get into journalism, you've got two main routes: do an internship or go to grad school.

Doing an internship is the faster way to get into the field. Job experience usually matters more than what degree you have. You can search for internships at www.journalismjobs.com, www.ed2010.com and www.mediabistro.com.

Going to grad school is great if you can afford it. (Many journalists don't have graduate degrees—the career itself is a huge learning experience. Graduate school journalism programs are generally for people whose undergrad degrees are in another field, like yourself.) Some of the great grad programs are at Northwestern in Chicago, NYU and the University of Missouri. Grad programs are good for getting started in journalism as well as making connections in the field and getting help finding internships.

What's a good school for journalism?

The University of Missouri School of Journalism just celebrated its 100th anniversary and was the first J-school in the world. If you think "real world experience" is important, just look at their web page and see how their students get their feet wet.

MU grads seem to do OK. Julie Vargas can't complain. Perhaps you've heard of her. She's the co-anchor of ABC's "20/20".
