Spaying A Cat And Pre-operative Blood Test

How do I care for a cat after spaying?

This isn't a comprehensive answer, but I can tell you two things I've learned from volunteering at my local humane society:The cat will have an incision from the surgery that is still healing, so you should handle them gently and do the best you can to prevent the cat playing too rough so that the stitches don't rip. I mean, if it's a kitten, good luck….but at least try to keep them from jumping down from very high places, etc. Also, the incision for a female is larger than for a male, so that warrants greater caution. The dust from regular clay litter can get into the healing incision and cause an infection. At the shelter where I volunteer, they provide cats that have recently been spayed/neutered with a special litter called Yesterday’s News - it's basically old newspaper rolled up into pellets. A cat gets this litter for 10 days after the surgery and then they are switched back to regular litter.Hope that's helpful. Thanks for spaying your cat!

How long does it take for a female cat to recover getting spayed?

It depends on a lot of factors. A spay surgery is a complete hysterectomy. (removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, and ovaries), so a pretty major job.Cats and dogs recover more quickly because they are horizontal creatures, not vertical. Still, it is a major op, and there is pain and time required for the abdominal wall to heal.In kittens, where the incision and organs are miniscule, if there are no complications, they bounce back very, sometimes too, quickly.Adult females, take a little longer. Females who have had kittens, and hence have a larger uterus, need more time, usually a week or two.Pregnant females and those in heat? Well, it’s a more complicated surgery, with more blood loss, a larger incision in the case of a pregnant spay, plus hormonal issues in both cases.Figure up to a month in both cases.ALL cats and dogs should be given adequate pain relief after a spay surgery.Even neutered boys should be given a day or two of pain relief after their surgeries. ‘There is a long-lasting injection that can be given after surgery so you don’t have to disturb your girl for 24 hours after she comes home to give her pain meds. That’s usually enough for the guys, especially if they’re kittens. (Older cats may require a bit more). With a lot of cats, the problem is convincing them to take it easy after surgery.

Spaying Cat Surgery Extras?

This is how vets keep the basic cost of their spays down. You'll find that the more expensive quotes for spaying include all these things. Your vet should have talked you through the pros and cons of each option to help you decide.

Inside sutures - advantage to you because they dissolve so you won't have to take the cat back for stitches out. We like to see our spays back in two weeks for a check regardless of whether there are stitches to come out, so we do one outside stitch so the owner has to bring the cat back.

E-collar - not always necessary, cat's don't always bother their wound. We offer people the collar to take in case the cat does start bothering the wound, we don't issue it as standard. It's only a few extra quid.

Pain medication - we recommend this for all neuters. It's an extra £10 on top of the spay fee. We could include this option in the basic price, but it would bring the basic price up by ten pounds. It's sort of annoying to have to explain this to everyone when we're quoting prices, but it's business decision. The pain relief option we offer is an injection that lasts 2 days. If owners are mean enough not to choose this option, we still give pain relief, as an injection that lasts 6 hours. Don't tell my boss this tho!

Like I said, these optional extras are a business decision to keep the quoted price of a spay down. They're all recommended, but vets can't do them without your consent because it costs you more.

Chalice

EDIT: I've just read the other answers and my God! Some of them really are examples of why you can't rely on people on here to have a clue what they're talking about.
Pain relief - this will not be a tranquiliser, you can get pain meds that are safe for cats!! We use an injection of meloxicam, an inflammatory that is safe for one-off use in cats.
Inside (intra-dermal) sutures are used ANYWAY in an operation - the muscle layer needs to be stiched up before the skin is. The skin can be stitched up using intra or extradermal sutures, often both. You can get stitches that dissolve for both kinds - intradermal stitches always dissolve. It doesn't mean the cat can't bust the wound open, the advantge is that you don't have to go back to get them removed.
Geez! This is why it's best to ask your vet for the specific details of how THEY do the spay.

Has a cat ever died while getting spayed?

I know from personal experience that it can happen. I took my two girls in at the same time and a mistake was made in surgery on one of them. She passed a week after surgery, despite my vets efforts to save her.

Let me stress that this does not happen often, and it was better for them to have the surgery. There is a risk with any surgery wether animal or human. However, the risk is very small and it is considered a routine procedure.

Both myself and my friends have had many animals spayed/neutered and this one instance is the only one we have ever had enything like this happen.

Will spaying my cat stop her from marking?

My cat is 9-10 years old and not spayed. When we first brought her home she peed all over the carpets on blankets or anything left on the floor. The previous owner had a cat so I figured it was a combo of the move and the smell of the other cat. I bought a carpet scrubber and did all my carpets plus I used Nature's Miracle to clean the urine spots. She then only occasionally peed on things. However in the last week it has gotten so bad that my house smells of cat urine - gross. She is still peeing in her litter box but now she pees on anything - couches, my bed, etc. I don't think she has a UTI as her behavior is the same and there is no change of diet or blood in her urine. I want to have her spayed and have an appointment in the near future. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar story with this stopping the marking behavior, also has anyone had an older cat spayed? Any info would be much appreciated!

How much spaying a cat will cost in India?

This depends on whom you go to for spaying.A government veterinary hospital will charge for the medicines (all the dressing, surgical kits required for the surgery). Now this may amount to say Rs 1000–1500.If you go to a reputed NGO like Blue Cross, or in case of Pune, Canine Control and Care, they will charge nothing for the surgery, but will charge for post-op care. Which comes to around 300 per day for 5–6 days. This may amount to Rs 1500–1800.If you go to a private VET who you trust and with whom you have had a good experience, they will charge anywhere from Rs 2000–5000. Post op is usually not required, or depends from case to case.Personally, I have had all my 3 cats spayed from Private VETs. Yes it is expensive, but they didn't suffer from any complications later on.I've had a similar experience with Govt veterinary hospitals and NGOs. Except that it is inexpensive. Please make sure that you get the post op done, because cats are known to open and scratch out their stitches which can lead to complications.Hope this helped, thanks.

Liver and Kidney Failure in Cat After Neutering?

At any point after you adopted this stray cat, did anyone take it to the vet for a complete check up with blood test to see how the internal organs were doing? A blood test for FIV and FeLV? The sad thing is people bring in cats and they don't have them vet checked and the could be diseased. Cats who get pregnant outdoors from random males means they can get sick and transmit those diseases to their kittens and at some point the disease is going to kick in and the kitten is going to die. That's why I suggest blood tests immediately BEFORE you become emotionally attached or spend a lot of money having it spayed or neutered only to find out you have to put the animal down because it's sick (FeLV is fatal).

I doubt very much if the surgery caused it. Cats can have undiagnosed problems and one cat with unknown heart problem died while being spayed. It happens sadly. My condolences on the loss of the kitten. When you're ready adopt from the SPCA.
