Starting Piano Lessons But .

Is 17 too old to start Piano Lessons?

People start piano at 45 and still become experts.

No, its not too late, nor will it ever be too late.

I am currently at university with students who have grey hair and their kids have already graduated. Theyre doing fine and everyone likes them. So do what you like, itll never be too late.

Is 15-16 too late to start Piano lessons?

I'm 15 now and I'm going to move with my family to another city in three months and at that time I'm going to be 16 (my birthday:2nd July). I asked a question about upright Pianos two weeks earlier I think and I told you that I'm a young Pianist but I'm an autodidact one, I never had Piano lessons, I only play by ear and by practicing. But now I'm feeling the need to take Piano lessons because my goal is to be a concert Pianist (or at least a professional Pianist) and I think I can't be one without proper lessons. I want to ask you is 15-16 a good age or is it too late to start Piano lessons and is it better to take a course or to have a personal Piano teacher at home. I really love the Piano. I remember the first time I played on a grand because it's not so long ago since I never had a Piano at home, I only played Piano in schools and concert halls and I've been practicing only there. Oh, and I wanna let you know that when I move to my new apartment my parents are going to buy a Piano for me.
P.S: If you need more details just let me know. Your help will be appreciated. Thank You :)

Why is piano lesson's soo boring at the start?

You're bored because playing the piano is harder than you thought it was. You want to play popular songs that you like, even though you might not have the skill yet to do so. The songs you are learning now are chosen to teach particular aspects of playing. When I took guitar lessons I had to play "boring" songs too because I needed to learn notes on a particular string, or learn how to play chords on different fret positions. Did your "fun" teacher ever teach you to read music? Guitar music isn't just chord charts you know.

In between lessons, as a break from regular practice, play something on the piano just for fun. There are musician "fake books" where a simplified melody is played with the right hand, while the left plays the basic chords, with a lot of improvisation or "faking" by the pianist depending on how "inspired" they get. Then go back to the other stuff.

I'm more of a singer, but my high school choir teacher taught us basic music theory which I would learn for the tests then promptly forget. Later on, I actually had to pay someone to teach me what I had ignored but discovered I needed to know in order to learn some very difficult music and to keep up with better trained musicians in the groups I was singing in.

If you learn that "boring stuff" you will also pick up enough basics to be able to write down your own music if you ever decide to give THAT a try.

Hang in there. Teachers do have different styles of teaching. Maybe if you just can't stand it after another year, don't quit piano lessons, but see if your mom can find another teacher. But give it some reasonable time!

What age do you start children in piano lessons?

Some tutors do teach children from 18 months, however, it generally isn't recommended.
Most tutors prefer to teach once the child is 4 years old, by that point, the child has a basic idea of rhythm.

Sounds like she'll be a little musical genius though! I recommend you start her on piano lessons a few weeks before she goes to primary school and then see how she copes with piano playing and doing homework from school at the same time.

How much do piano lessons usually cost????

It really all depends on a number of factors. The amount of experience and trianing the teacher has (i.e. a college student vs. a concert pianist), and the location of the lessons being the most influential.

As an average estimate, 20 dollars for thirty minutes is reasonable, but if you're willing to travel to the teacher's house, it can be cheaper. I would suggest against getting lessons from a music store, because the price is usually higher since the teacher has to give a percentage of their earnings to the store. But also, it is traditional that you purchase your own books, and they can add be anywhere from 7-25 dollars a book.

If it seems you can't afford lessons, many teachers also encourage students to take lessons every other week or once a month. If you still don't feel like you can spend the money, there are a variety of 'teach yourself piano' books, but they will only take you so far.

Good luck!

Should I skip piano lessons?

I have lessons every Saturday, but didn't have lessons last Saturday because she wasn't available. And honestly, I didn't mind at all. I'm starting to get bored of piano lessons, but not piano. I have been playing the piano for about 9 years, and I'm capable of learning songs myself. But the thing is, I get really lazy, especially during the summer, and I don't practice the songs the teacher has given me. I want to skip lessons, for just a few weeks, should I do it?

Do you have to take piano lessons to be able to play drums?

No. although learning piano will teach you more about music.
