Legalizing marijuana pros and cons?

I am doing a project for my college speech class and one of our topics is if marijuana should be legalized? I am trying to get a list of pros and cons (other than the list I already made). Please be polite, this is for school. Thanks!

Agree or Disagree? Legalization of Marijuana?

A Controversial political topic that has been talked about for the past decades is the legality of cannabis. I agree that marijuana should be legalized. Marijuana is currently illegal to use, possess, cultivate, transfer or trade in the United States, but why? Although cannabis is illegal in the United States, it is slowly becoming decriminalized, and more tolerable by other countries around the world.
As compared to most drugs, Marijuana is the least dangerous. I feel marijuana is a widely misunderstood substance. People confuse legality with morality, and assume that if something is not tolerated by the government, then it must be bad. It’s funny that most people tolerate alcohol because the government made it legal, and not marijuana because it is illegal? Yet facts prove that alcohol use leads with about 100,000 deaths per year, compared to no recorded deaths in history for marijuana use. Who is to blame for that?
It is ridiculous that the government is still spending millions of dollars trying to combat a substance that is far less harmful than alcohol and actually has been proven to have medical uses. The total number of marijuana arrests is far more than the total number of arrests for all violent crimes combined, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. New times call for new changes. Its time for our government to step up, and makes changes.
The legalization of marijuana would provide this generation with several benefits. If it were to become legal, First and foremost it could help to solve our national debt by adding revenue and tax money, it would benefit those who are in need of medical relief by providing it to them in a safe and regulated way, and it would also benefit society by allowing police to concentrate on more violent criminals.

Do you think Marijuana should be legalized?

I have never used marijuana, or any other illegal drug, in fact, I don't use alcohol. I think that people who use these substances set themselves up for failure. No one becomes an alcoholic or drug addict if they avoid these substances. In my mine, neither alcohol nor recreational drugs have any socially redeeming value.

That said, making a substance illegal DOES NOT stop people from getting it and using it. The Prohibition Law pretty much proved that. If convicts can get illegal drugs in maximum security prisons, what type of draconian measure would actually end drug use?

Since no law can prohibit people from getting something they want, there are two factors to consider. First, the phony "War on Drugs" has empowered government to spy on us, and to justify the creation of armed gangs to break into people's homes in the name of "law enforcement". The fact that these drugs are illegal means that people will commit crimes in order to get the money to purchase them. It also escalates violence by drug cartels and pushers. Does anyone think that we are better of with the current situation? Laws that make drugs illegal, which create a climate of violence, both by drug sources and counter-drug enforcement, and still fail to prevent drug usage need to be repealed.

I think government needs to go after demand, not supply. People only gravitate toward drugs because drugs have been advertised for decades in pop culture. I think anyone who glamorizes drugs, or makes them look desireable or sophisticated needs to go to jail. The only way to reduce drug useage is to go after demand.

I really believe that our politicians couldn't care less about drug use. They are using the drug problem to increase their power. The phony "War on Terrorism" is another example of this. The terrorism is a result of our intrusive foreign policy, of intervening in foreign wars. It is our foreign policy that is the DEMAND for terrorism. Our politicians tell us they are going to stop the supply by eliminating our civil rights.

Canada or united states for investing in marijuana stocks ?

go with Canada.

as long as the US Federal Government still considers pot to be illegal despite what several states have decided, the American businesses in this area are still pretty risky.

Wouldn't legalizeing marijuana help improve the economy?

yeah. it would save us from spending all of the money pursuing people who commit such a victimless crime. the government would be able to tax the hell out of it. people would also be able to purchase seeds offline and in stores to grow their own marijuana. so youd have to think with the munchies all of the fast food industry would profit. as well as the home and garden stores like home depot as well as small town hardware stores. my friend said as soon as marijuana is legalized he is buying stock in ziplock. people after they smoke marijuana are in a pretty good *** mood.
