Stray Cat With Open Wounds Behind It

What do I do if a stray cat has an open wound?

A while ago our area was overrun by a feral colony. When the number of cats just on their porch reached 27, my parents started bringing them to the humane society. (who promptly put all the cats down - there's no TNR clinic here or even no-kill shelters!) After realizing the cats would be put down, my parents decided to "keep" 2 male kittens who were friendly. Although, in my parents eyes, the boys are just wild cats that they didn't take to be put down - not pets.

Lately the colony has started growing again, and a large Tom has been attacking the two that live on our property. This morning I saw one of "our" cats sunbathing, and he's missing a huge chunk from his leg! No blood, but it looks like exposed muscle! He seems fine - was purring and affectionate when I took out the trash, but the wound scares me. I can't afford to take him to the vet and my parents won't invest money in "strays" (nor do I think the cat would let me pick him up) Is there anything I can do for him at home?

Open wound under cat's chin?

The best home remedy is to keep it clean. Using a mild soap, like Ivory, using a gauze pad (not cotton ball... they "thread" too much), wet the pad with warm water, and wipe it on the soap. Then use it to wipe the injury site. Do this at least twice a day. If you want, you can also try using hydrogen peroxide on a pad to wipe and disinfect it regularly. If you want to "cover" it, you could try using a dab of Vaseline. This can protect it outside contamination, and if he licks it off, it is "inert" and won't cause him any harm internally.

What you need to watch for is the color of the skin in/around the wound area. If it starts turning RED, inflamed, and swollen, it's become infected. Then you need to take him to the vet to have the vet take care of it.

Stray cat with open wound on his neck.?

Call a SPCA type of shelter in your area and tell them that there is a stray but friendly cat in your area with an open neck wound and you'd like him to get treatment - shelters are funded by donations and have vets on staff to treat wounded strays that they often will then put up for adoption if the animal passes tests (good with humans/healthy enough/etc..).

You can call a local vet and tell them the situation and ask if you can borrow a possible trap to catch the cat first before you call the shelter or you can ask the shelter to help you trap the cat as long as he/she is in a specific area and can be found. If not, it's better that you trap the cat using food.

Stray cat has blood behind his ear?

Bless you for trying to help ferile cats. Ear mites are inside the ear, so this is not likely the cause of the scabbing on the cat you are feeding. It could be a variety of things, and there is little chance you could treat it through something put in food. Your choices are pretty limited. You could use a humane trap (they can sometimes be borrowed for free from local animal control or rescue organizations) to catch the cat and have it treated. That can be difficult if you are feeding several. Or you could just continue to feed it. I also have indoor cats and try to help the local ferile cats. It can be hard, because the choices are so few.

How do I help this stray cat with a severe open wound on its ear?

I keep the following available for cat rescue:

1) A can of tuna or wet cat food cost $1
2) Bag of reasonable dry food. $4-$5
3) Drontal dewormer (Drontal is the only wormer that kills every type of intestinal worm commonly found in dogs and cats.) $3
4) Revolution (Treats and kills flea, tick and ear mite as well as heartworm, hookworm, roundworms.)$10
***Advantage works just as good but it is sometimes harder to find and it is bit more expensive.
***I don’t use any other product other than Revolution or Advantage as none of the others treat ear mites which is a guaranteed problem for strays.

5) Cat safe shampoo designed for flea treatment. $5
6) Litter box
7) Option electric hair trimmer.

If the cat comes around on a regular basis then treat it 24-48 hours before bringing it in the house. This will allow the fleas to die or jump off the cat outside and not in your house where they will breed and cause a problem for you.

First never feed a stray before treatment. You want the cat hungry so it will gobble up the Drontal pill.

Read directions for Dontral pill. Usually a full pill can be used to treat 4 small cats, 2 medium cats or 1 large cat. Use a ¼, ½, or full pill. Wrap the piece of Dontral in wet cat food or tuna. Do not use the whole can of food. It has to be a small enough portion that you can see the dish is empty meaning the cat ate all the pill. If you use the whole can you won’t know the pill was eaten or the cat will eat the whole can leaving the pill behind and it won’t be hungry anymore so no second chance to treat it.

After the cat eats the tuna wrapped Drontal allow him to eat as much food as he wants. While he is eating treat the cat with Revolution. This gets applied between its shoulder blade or on the back of its neck. It has to get on the skin not the top of the fur. To make this easier I sometimes use electric hair clippers to shave a small patch on the back of the cat’s neck.

If the cat comes around on a regular basis let the cat go. The fleas, ticks mites etc will die off over 24-48 hours. Then the next day bring the cat in, feed it a good meal as it may not want to eat after you bath it.

Give it a good bath using the medicated shampoo to help take out any remaining fleas or other skin parasites.

Make sure you have a litter box read for it as well.

I got bit by a stray cat. There was no visible wound nor did it bleed. Should I be worried?

Everyone else here has thoroughly covered the rabies concern, so I won’t bother with that.Even if you know the cat has been vaccinated for rabies, you should still probably get medical attention, such as a tetanus shot booster, if you haven’t had one in the last 10 years. Cat bites tend to be worse than other animal bites.According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s possible to get a severe infection from a seemingly minor cat bite because their sharp teeth can inject the bacteria deeper into the flesh where it can travel to the joints and tendons. Even a bite that looks like a pin prick can be serious. Cat Bites May Lead to Serious Infections, Hospitalizations

How to treat cat's open wound? (abscess)?

this cat isn't mine, it's a stray. I noticed she had gotten what looked like a bite wound near her anus, and another hole which turned into a cyst on the underside of her tail. it obviously bothered her and she eventually became very skinny and lethargic. one day i bought her a little bed and when i lifted her up she cried and it began dripping pus.
I took her to the vet. she didn't have a fever, and they gave her a shot of convenian (antibiotic shot) i asked if she needed a cone for her head, or anything else and the vet said she should be fine. for a broke college student it was expensive. the cat hangs out in bed all day, has a healthy appetite, and after pussing a lot, it seems to have stopped and the tail wound scabbed over and is mostly healed, but now there are holes on her upper left leg where pus was dripping out a few days ago.... is this normal? should i leave it alone to heal? i wiped an iodine solution over the wounds when they were pussing to clean them and i read that i should just let it heal from the inside out... i don't have any saline to flush it out with. should i leave it be? it's just really creepy to see holes in her leg, but it doesn't seem to bother as much now and she's getting more energy everyday. she got the antibiotic shot on 05/04/15

Caring for a cat with broken leg and open wound?

THIS IS WHAT IS FEASIBLE !!! One of your neighbours is going to report you to the local animal welfare people for animal abuse.

Any animal with a broken leg MUST be seen by a vet to assure that there is no further damage or complications as a result of the break. And without knowing what caused the break in the first place the rest of the cat should be examined also.

AUG 16 - my cat comes limping home late at night. Neighbour calls to say they saw a coyote messing with the cat in their back yard. 1/2 hour later someone else calls to inform me that the cat was hit by a car. Needless to say the cat was transported to our vet where it was discovered that he had;

- a broken leg injury similar to your cat
- internal hemorrhaging and heavy bruising
- virtually no claws left
- and a rather nasty bite on the butt

It's been 5 weeks since that incident and he gets to see the vet every week. Did I mention that's a 2 hour round trip to the next village. I am not a rich person and I cannot afford this either. That doesn't matter though; this cat WILL get proper treatment regardless.

My female cat has a large open wound next to her anus. Would her licking promote healing?

the cat licking the wound would introduce bacteria if it is longer than an inch it may need stitches and if she is so uncomfortable it is affecting her eating pattern i would take her to the vets as they can give her some pain relief, a solution to bathe the wound in to prevent infection, antibiotics and possibly suture the wound if needed

What if I got bitten by a cat but there is no wound?

I’ll take this as a serious question, but I have doubts:If you were indeed bitten by a cat and can see no wound, it is possible that the bite was a puncture wound. That is, one of the cat’s teeth, likely one of its canine teeth (the long teeth at the front of the cat’s mouth) penetrated you skin and was pulled straight out rather than making a tearing bite which would show a wound - a broken area of skin which is, no doubt, bleeding.Puncture wounds can be caused by anything small and sharp such as a nail, ice pick, or in this case, a sharp tooth.Puncture wounds usually close up almost instantly - the tooth goes in, puncturing the skin and then is pulled straight out and the hole closes up.Puncture wounds can be potentially more dangerous than a tearing type of wound because a tearing type wound will bleed and the blood flow will wash out a lot of the dirt that was pushed into the wound.A puncture wound, however, often will not bleed at all. This means that any dirt, bacteria, etc. that was pushed into the skin remains there. The first thing to do when you get a puncture wound is to squeeze the area to try and cause blood flow. If you can get a few drops of blood out, it will wash out much of the dirt that was “injected” into the skin. You must do this quickly after the puncture wound occurs, waiting even 10 minutes can result in your not getting any blood flow.If you have suffered a puncture wound from the cat bite, it should still show, as an indentation, it just won’t be a big gash that one thinks of when someone is bitten by an animal. My advise is to keep watch on the area. If it becomes red and causes pain, you need to have a doctor look at it. It may needed to be cleaned out and, possibly, you might need antibiotics.Dealing with many feral cats, my wife and I have bitten and most of the time the wound was a puncture wound. We have always squeezed the wound (technically, we “expressed” the wound) to get it to bleed a few drops.Neither of us has every had such a wound become infected. Causing some blood flow cleans the wound out and given that we are both healthy, our immune systems takes care of any minor infection that might have occurred.NOW - if you were bitten and there is absolutely no mark, no matter how small, then either you have super or magical powers or the cat’s teeth must be made out of rubber and can’t even scratch your skin.
