Stream Lined Online Guitar Lessons

Which is the best way to learn guitar online as a beginner?

Learning guitar is easy if you learn it the right way. Being a tutor I would suggest that you take your basic lessons, until chords from a tutor and later you can switch to online lessons.Sadly, there are many other students who find it hard to afford classes. So I created this YouTube channel playlist where people can learn guitar from scratch. The syllabus is organized with practice lessons and theory as well. This is exactly the same as what I teach to my students. At the end of the playlist you should be able toGet the chords for any random songCreate your own songListen to a solo and playCreate your own solos as well. There are many other interesting stuff waiting for you. Songsterr is great for if you want to see the tabs played in real time (rhythm, how the notes should sound, etc.) (it’s free)UltimateGuitar is great for just learning tabs on the fly. It’s rare you won’t find the song you’re looking for. It’s free (except the mobile version).

What in your opinion makes a good guitar teacher?

I understand what you mean. My first guitar teacher literally didn’t teach anything apart from basic open chords and C major scale in open position. My second teacher taught some basic chord progressions, and some Bollywood songs when I wanted to play Metallica. Then I started learning on my own, got stuck in a rut until I started learning from a teacher who taught me exactly the stuff I wanted to play. Here are some points in my opinion that make a good guitar teacher.Understands your guitar playing goals/motivation. When I started learning from my teacher Aditya Shukla, he firstly asked me what kind of music I’m interested in, what kind of stuff I want to learn/play and my current level of playingHelps you get the fundamentals rightsBreaks down mental blocks, and encourages growth mindsetHelps build good habits, because it is a real pain to change bad habits. I learned that the hard way when I was learning sweep pickingGives proper feedback on the things you playHas sound knowledge of music theory which can be taught without creating any confusion. I really had tough time to understand what ghost notes areHope this gives you a better idea. Cheers! :-)

What is the best practice routine for an intermediate guitar player?

If you’re an intermediate guitar player, I’m going to assume you know basic techniques and music theory.I never liked the words ‘practice’ and ‘routine’ when it comes to playing guitar because it makes the whole thing sound like a day job.As long as you believe that what you’re playing is productive to your musical intelligence in any way, it doesn’t have to have to be so rigid and structured. That aside, I practice by dividing my time on the following:1. Set a GoalSeriously, stop noodling around so much and get to fuckin’ work. That insane solo you heard? You can play it.Break it down and master specific parts each day. The only thing keeping you from what you can achieve is your mind.2. Music TheoryLearn a new scale. To retain what you’ve learned, compose something that includes all of these notes.Learn about the circle of fifths, building chords and how they function. You love noodling right? Knock yourself out but stick to the theory that you just learned and you’ll surprise yourself with what you’re gonna end up with.3. TechniqueAre your bends in tune? Does your vibrato sound as tasty as your favorite guitar player’s? Are your sweeps clean? Do you have a good sense of timing?A lot of guitar players focus on speed and skip on some of the most basic things that make you sound professional. This brings me to my next point:4. Record YourselfI can’t stress how important this is. I regret not doing this earlier.Recording yourself will make you analyze your playing from an objective standpoint. While you’re playing your guitar, you don’t really notice the small intricate details that your audience is hearing. And most importantly,5. USE A FUCKING METRONOME!You can be the most technical shredder of all time but it won’t amount to shit if you can’t keep time with a band that’s playing a slow version of Happy Birthday.Happy practicing!

How do I reverse my bad guitar technique?

By deconstructing your technique and starting over.I did this with picking. I used to hold my pick like Steve Morse (the three finger thing). Ultimately this started holding me back for the style I was after (I loved Malmsteen, Johnson, Vai, Satriani, etc).So I watched a Paul Gilbert video on picking, and he actually said, “I used to hold the pick like this,” (he showed his grip, which was identical to mine) and said, “but this was holding me back, so I switched to this,” (he showed the more typical two finger grip, a lighter touch), “and it took about a year, but the problems went away.”Now, we’re talking about Paul Gilbert here. He is a virtuoso level player and he’s played with everybody. He has no need to do anything different really. And still, he spent a year relearning how to hold a pick. Here’s that video. For the record, you should watch all his videos. Gilbert is an outstanding guitar teacher and all around advocate of schooled technique.Go to 1:20 to hear him start talking about holding the pick.
