Suggest A Good Car Amplifier

What are some good car amplifiers?

Most are functionally equivalent, and you'll find that almost all have spec sheets that appear to be nearly the same for any given configuration and power rating.  And most sound the same, in fact, many car audio enthusiasts argue relentlessly as to whether the amplifier brand matters at all for a given power output. In price bands, at the low end, most are made by a handful of firms, and marketed under dozens of different brand names like Boss, Soundstorm, Lanzar, Hitron, Planet Audio, etc.   Most are rebadged core mainboards and/or cases. In the midrange, with many good products, are companies like Epsilon, which markets Soundstream, Precision Power, and others like Maxxsonics that market MB Quart, Hifonics and others,  as well as Harman, who sells JBL and Infinity.  All these are highly competent products with decent support and warranties. At the higher end (and its unclear what that means beside cost), are companies like ZED, Arc Audio, Gladen, Hertz, etc.  I've either used, or am currently using amps from all these categories, and candidly, other than cost, the only serious differentiator is support when the thing breaks.  Its true that the ZED Leviathan III I'm using in one of my cars has a prodigious presence, but it doesn't sound "better" than the PPI 900.4 I'm using in another car, or the Boss 5 channel in yet another car. Finally, you can find nearly identical (in other words, identical circuit boards and components) amps sold under completely different brand names at wildly different price points.  The PPI 900.4 cost $189, NVX had the identical unit selling for $249, Hertz HDP4 cost $600 and Polk PA D4000.4 cost $249.  They are all IDENTICAL except branding and packaging.

The local shop guy suggested JBL GX A644SI Four Channel Car Amplifier for speakers and components and Pioneer GM-D8601 Class D Mono Amplifier for subwoofer...would these suffice?

Which car amplifier to power subs?

First of all the Alpine SWR-T10 and SWR-T12 are only available in a single 4 ohm voice coil. That makes your decision on that choice there. It's pretty much all that's necessary for running two subs and having a 2 ohm load on an amplifier.

As for the amplifier choice, it really depends on your budget. The thin Alpine subs are what I would consider the best thin sub on the market right now, so my guess is you're going for something a little more high end. The Type-R subs were designed at the same time the new generation of PDX amplifiers were so with that in mind they were made to match each other perfectly. The PDX-M12 is a perfect match for two of the thin Type-R subs. If that's outside of your budget the MRP-M1000 will get the job done. Obviously, it's a less expensive amplifier so you won't get quite the same output or sound quality though. I really like Alpine's new series of X-Power amplifiers they announced at CES. The MRX-M100 would be a nice match too. It's kind of like the older PDX-1.1000 just without the price tag. Those won't be out for a couple of months at least though so if you're looking to buy now the first choice is PDX-M12 and the second is the MRP-M1000.

As for the mounting of the subs, you can't just throw a sub in a wheel well and hope that it will sound good. That goes for any subwoofer. If you wanted the subs to go there, a custom fiberglass enclosure would be the way to go. The subs don't require much space for a sealed enclosure. The SWR-T10 required volume is anywhere from .25 to .5 cubic feet. The SWR-T12 is only .4 to .75 cubic feet. Unless your really trying to save space I don't necessarily like to use the wheel well for an enclosure. While it can give a very factory finished look with a custom enclosure it still means you need to take out your spare tire. There's always that one time you get a flat that you wish you could just throw on your spare in 5 minutes and be on your way rather than waiting for roadside service. A small sealed enclosure off to the side is usually a good way to go. The best thing to do would be to visit your local authorized Alpine dealer and have them take a look at your car. It's really difficult to give advice over the internet without seeing your exact setup.

What is a good car amplifier brand?

Well, first off, it Depends on how much Money you are willing to spend.

If you want the Best for your Money, I would suggest Alpine, Pioneer, Sony (NOT an X-Plode), or even a Nitro Amp!!

I would Suggest you get a Separate Amp for you Sub, and another Amp for your 2 Speakers! A good $100 Amp like I got (Nitro 800W 2-Channel) works Great for a Subwoofer.
You don't need as Powerful of an Amp for your 2 Speaker.
200Watts should be Plenty!!

Don't get a 4-Channel Amp, and Bridge the 2 Rear Channels as a Subwoofer; This will make your 2 Speakers get Quiet when the Sub Gets Loud!!

Don't buy an Amp at a Local Store, because they have High Mark-up. Search Ebay, or other Car Audio Websites like SonicElectonix!!

And Stay Away from 'Generic' brands, like VR3 & Jensen! These brands will sound Worse than you Factory Stereo!!

And just so you Know, Rockford Fosgate, Cerwin Vega, and JL Audio are the Top-of-the-Line, and the Most Expensive!!

I have a Nitro 800W 2-Channel Amp for my 10" Sub. It really Kicks As*!!

How to adjust my Kenwood car amp?

There are a lot of variables that go into answering this question, such as the type of enclosure the subs were installed in, type of car, direction the subs are pointing, type of head unit, type of music listened to, etc.

You are better off learning what the 4 controls do and then fine tune your system by ear, so here it goes in the order I would suggest doing the settings:

3. LPF - This is the built-in crossover for your subs. Only frequencies below this setting are sent to the sub. For 10" subs, you can set this anywhere from 70 Hz to 100 Hz. I suggest 80 Hz as a good starting point. Your audible hearing range is around 20 Hz (bass notes) to 20,000 Hz (high notes).
4. Input sensitivity – This should match the signal level coming from your receiver to the amp. Start with this setting turned all the way down. Then set the volume of your receiver to the level you will normally listen to for your other speakers. Then adjust this control so your subs are putting out a volume that is in line with what you are hearing from the other speakers. As a rule, the lower you set this level, the less distortion your speakers will get.
2.) Bass Boost Level - Boosts the volume level for frequencies near 40 Hz (on your amp). This is one of those things you'll have to tune by ear. I would start off with 9 dB and move it around a bit to see what it sounds like. Set to your preference.
1.) ISF, also called a subsonic filter, blocks frequencies below the frequency (Hz) you set. The only reason to set this to “on” is if your subs don't handle bass notes below a certain frequency well. This shouldn't be an issue for your 10" subs, so I'd just leave it off.

After you first set all your settings, you will probably listen to your system for a while and decide to change everything. Keep tinkering with it until it is fine-tuned to your tastes and have fun doing it.

Please suggest me a good amp to power my pioneer subwoofer ts wx303 (250w RMS)..... :D?

Its a 4-ohm sub-woofer so you will need an amplifier than can output 250 watts RMS into a 4-ohm load.

Heres some decent ones:
