Suggestion Required To Buy A New Bicycle

Tips and suggestions for a girl wanting to buy her first motorcycle?

I'm a 20 year old, 5'7, 120 lbs girl, and I wanna buy a standard or a sport bike (no cruiser bikes). The main thing I'll use it for will be to commute to university. Also, of course right now I don't know how to ride a motorcycle and I can't drive a manual car either, so will it be hard to learn? I'm gonna take the MSF course soon, but can I really learn how to ride in just 2 days? How is the MSF course, from those that have taken it?

so, my main priority is probably the price, it would be great if I can find a good 125cc-300cc motorcycle for $2000-3000. These are the motorcycles I've thought about, let me know of any tips or the differences between each and help me choose, or suggest other good bikes for my situation:

Honda Grom
Kawasaki z125
Ninja 250
Ninja 300
Honda CBR125r - CBR300r

Also, I plan to have this motorcycle for at least 2 years, so keep that in mind when choosing the motorcycles. Example, do you think I can stay happy with a 125 cc bike for 2-3 years?

Also, what is ABS exactly and do I really need it on my first bike? because I think a lot of these bikes don't have ABS, so if that's important then it reduces my options a lot.

Lastly, is buying from craigs list or cycle trader recommended? I can find cheap bikes that way but I'm not gonna be able to inspect the bike and see if anything is wrong with it, so I might get ripped off.

I know I have a lot of questions, but I don't know anyone that rides and can help me, so I appreciate all the help I can get!

Any suggestions on fixing a three-speed shifter on a bicycle?

Damian is correct, but since you didn't mention what brand hub you have it is difficult to help.

Sturmey Archer will have a small chain protruding from the hub to shift, while Shimano will have an "L" shaped piece screwed on the end of the axle. Screw this piece off and there is a long rod. If you push it into the hub you'll note it is spring loaded.

With Shimano, you should take both the L shape and the rod out of the hub, then tighten the rear wheel so that there is no slop in the chain.

Reinsert the rod, and turn the L shape onto the hub until the little gizmo attached to the inside of it protrudes completely plus just enough to line up with the cable. Shift the shifter to 2nd gear.

Attach the cable and turn it in until a little round mark appears in the window of the L. You are ready to go.

Make sure that when you shift that you STOP pedalling, whether Shimano or Sturmey Archer.

Any suggestions for bicycles?

Define "not too expensive". I'm not privy to your bank account or credit card info. All good bicycles will...
A) Come from a REAL bicycle shop.
B) Have both double wall rims & a "cassette" rear cog - not a "freewheel".
C) Start around $450 - $500.

Look for a comfort and/or hybrid bike with NO suspension parts. Some now call hybrid bikes "fitness bikes". They're almost as fast as a road bike but with a slightly more upright sitting position. See links...

Or for the same bike with factory rear rack & fenders...

If you can both assemble & TUNE-UP a bike yourself...Nashbar has a hell-of-a-good deal...

If not - have it shipped to a bike shop for assembly & final tuning.

What is the best bicycle to buy in India?

Hi,This is a very generic question, however, I will try my best to help you reach a decision. However, first let me know clarity that there is no one single bicycle in India that can be called as the best one. Best bicycle is the one that suits and fulfills your requirements. However, you can follow a simple process to shortlist some good bicycle for your self - You can refer to a detailed bicycle buying guide. These are the steps you should ideally follow:Figure out your need and requirementsTake a paper and pen and jot down where you would be riding your bicycle to.How frequently will you be using the same?Finalize your budget - One important point to keep in mind is that you will need some money to buy some essential accessories too - Helmet, Air pump, Reflectors etc - A budget around the 20K to 25K mark would be good. However, you can still buy good bicycles if you have lower budgets (Below 10000 as well)Third thing that you need to decide upon is the type of bicycle you want to buy. There three main classification amongst bicycles.Mountain Bicycles or MTBHybrid Bicycles - Useful for commuting. Most people would find this bicycle good enough for their needsRoad Bikes - Built for speed.Important Tips:Try to limit the features that you expect from a bicycle. If you plan on buying a budget bicycle (And ride it regularly in traffic) - Get atleast one disc brake. Most budget bike brakes will not work well in rains.Buy gears only if you ride in hilly areas or have a lot of bridges on your way. Please remember - More number of gears does not get you a faster bikeTry to avoid bicycles with dual suspensions. You will not only get a better bicycle in the same budget but will also save a lot money on maintenance. Some Bicycle Recommendations:Budget bicycle below Rs. 1000I would suggest you go for the Mach city iBike. This bicycle has a good built quality and comes with some gear options as well.Other good options include:Montra Helicon Disc - This is a really good bicycle below Rs. 20000 in India. If you have a good budget. Go for the Giant Escape 2 bicycle. It is a really good bike from one of the leading bicycle brands in the worldI hope this brief answer help you select the right bicycle for yourself.Do UpVote if you found this answer helpful.

Suggestions for a $650 road bike?

Although this is entry-level pricing, there are a few bikes that list at or near that range. See [1] for example.

The 2010 Trek 1.1 lists at $659: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/1_series/11/

The 2009 model was also $659, you may be able to find one at a little discount if you are lucky.

If you are willing to bump up your price range a little bit, a more options open up at below $800, see [2]. For example, the Felt F95 lists at $769: http://www.feltbicycles.com/USA/2010-Product-Catalog/Road/F-Series/F95.aspx

There are actually several good options around $600-$800 if you're willing to consider a fixed gear or single speed bike. If you want drop bars (which is more of the "road experience"), for example, there is the Trek 2nd District at $709 and Surly Steamroller at $720. Some of the flat bar options are cheaper still.

While the list of bikes isn't exhaustive you can play around with some of the options at [3] to explore more.

What size bicycle pedals do I buy?

Any pair of 9/16 pedals will work. Look at http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Pro...

You can get a good pair of steel platform pedals for about $15 at a local bike shop. You don't have to pay shipping. Two hints:

1. Put some grease on the male threads before installing the pedal. You will be glad that you did.
2. The right pedal has the usual right-to-tighten thread. The left pedal has a left-to-tighten thread.

What should I look for when buying a new bicycle and can you give me a suggestion on a bike that’s no more than $200 for trail riding?

As others say, the problem with a cheap bike is the materials. They come out heavy (which matters much more on a trail than it does on the street) and they tend to be made from inferior metals. This really matters, surprisingly - but only in adult bikes. You can put a child on a nasty metal bike and it will be safe and happy - but adult muscles and weight can defeat poor grade steel far more easily than you expect.I have managed to destroy two bikes by metal-fatigue, and I am not a trail rider: having a bike come apart underneath you while riding on a road is unpleasant - having that happen deep in the woods on a rough track can be life-threatening.So I am another of those people who recommend either saving up or a second-hand bike at that price level. I get the idea you might be a novice, so there’s no point listing all kinds of technical matters and things to look out for - the only thing that should make you walk away from a cheap bike is dents to the actual frame tubes themselves. Dents weaken things, a lot.(if you think about it, once you have a trail bike that fits you well and which you enjoy riding, you’re probably going to keep it for ten years. Look at the purchase price over that kind of timescale, and get some credit to buy a $1,000 bike. That’s less than most people spend on coffee, per week, for ten years. It’s worth it.)

Should I buy a new bike or second hand bike?

Buy a used bike in the following scenarios-You don't know to ride a bike.If you're yet to learn how to ride, then there are good chances that you might fall or scrape things. Even if not, you will use the clutch-gear-accelerator in wrong way. Which will harm the bike and its engine.2. You have budget constraints.Do remember that in most cases- more you pay, better you get. But since that is the constraint, it's better to go for the used one if you really need one. Try to buy less used and relatively new bike. Buy a bike with less cc which is cheaper to buy, own and maintain. But bear in mind that used bike will need frequent visit to service station compared to new.3. You're not going to use it for more than 2 years.Time flies. So does 2 years. New bike value will depreciate a lot in the initial years. So it makes sense of buy a used bike in this case and sell it later at little lesser amount.4. You are getting a really good deal on a used bike.If you are finding a great deal from your friend/family on the used vehicle then you can consider provided- you know the bike, is relatively new, is in good condition and you like that bike.In other good cases- Buy a new bike. Why?Price difference between used and new bike is less unlike cars. You have the freedom to choose the model you love. That is too in the color you like! For the extra money you pay- you get the peace of mind. You don't need to worry about the previous ownership, defects… Etc. Even if the new bike has any fault it will be repaired free of cost.New bike will have better brakes, better stability, planted tyres, better suspensions and new technologies. Which will save you in panic situations. On road any thing can happen. And you know- safety is above all. What's the point, if you save 30k and spend 30k at hospital.New bike feel. It's pleasure- to go and bring a new bike from showroom, to ride on a smooth engine and to flaunt to your friends ;)If you don't look back at your bike after you park it, you've bought the wrong bike. Fact!
