What songs sound similar to the song "Blue Velvet"?

"Blue Velvet" most commonly known from its appearance in David Lynch's film of the same name.
I'd love to hear some songs that sound similar (era/genre etc.)

Why doesnt anyone on yahoo answers like real music?

it is saddening to see everyone on yahoo answers only listen to bands like the beatles, radiohead, pink floyd, black sabbath and metallica when it is well established amongst musical scholars that all of those bands were terrible (ie Hampus Gronvall and Piero Scaruffi).
i am 15 years old and love bands like faust, ground zero, amm, the list goes on...but no one else my age listens to this? they all like classic rock music which is just awful, its all just about drugs and sex ;__; i thought maybe on here i would find some REAL music fans but i guess i was wrong? is there anyone out there who listens to this true music???

Will there ever be a band as big as the Beatles?

I’m going to start by saying….yes, I think it’s possible. Forever is a long time, and culture changes very quickly these days. But no, I don’t think a band could be as big as the Beatles right this moment. In order for that to happen, a lot of things in our society would have to change. Here’s the thing. Yes, the Beatles really were that good. And yes, the Beatles on Ed Sullivan was one of the greatest moments in television. But also, what else were you going to do that night? Check your Facebook? Play your Xbox? Binge watch your favorite show on Netflix?People have a bad habit of comparing today’s society to a world where there’s three channels on the TV. It just doesn’t work. Part of the reason there hasn’t been a band that big again is because there’s too many other things competing for our attention. Not just that, but any band playing today is also competing with a million music genres that didn’t exist before. A band that’s going to be as big as the Beatles would have to appeal to fans of pop, rap, country, electronica, all forms of rock, punk, and metal, and whatever else is floating around out there. All at the same time.On top of all this, rock isn’t receiving much major label support in general. Not in America at least. This is due to a wide variety of changes within the music industry centered around the fact that people don’t buy records anymore. But the result is, rock doesn’t get much radio play anymore, and you don’t see it on TV anymore. This makes it hard for a band to build any kind of mainstream fanbase. And it causes people who don’t no any better to scream “Rock is dead!” at the top of their lungs. The truth is, there’s so much out there that you’ll never be able to listen to it all…..but that’s a different answer to a different question. So in order for a band to be as big as the Beatles, they’d have to be really really really good, and also, everything I just mentioned would have to change .I’ll leave you with this last thought. Do we really need a band to be as big as the Beatles again? I guess it’d help shut up the “rock is dead” crowd. But the Beatles were dangerously big. Any bigger, and Beatlemania might’ve turned into a legitimate religion. Personally, I’m happy with rock n’ roll being in the Wild West, which is essentially where it is now. We’ve always wanted to be in the Wild West anyway, and here we are.

How good do you have to be at guitar to be in a band? I practice 1.5 - 2 hours a day, every day divided into 30 minute chunks. My goal is to be able to play songs like Deep Purple’s Highway Star or Blue Oyster Cults Godzilla in a band.

As a STP & Deep purple fan (and a long term guitarist) I thought I could help. I have played in rock/ contemporary bands for about 15 years and also taught guitar to students over the years. Its one thing to play a song at home sitting down on a bed, and another thing to play it live. For one you are now standing (usually), you have to deal with pedals/ tuning etc continuously, and you have to play it start to finish no matter if you make a mistake. Sounds obvious, but this comes as a bit of a shock to some people. They realise that they are not as good of a guitarist as they think they are as they start to miff things live. (Its not all doom and gloom, a lot of small errors will be hidden by the wall of sound from the other instruments.)I have put together a bit of a roadmap for you. I know people will come back and say “I could play this after 2 years etc”, but generally they will lack decent tone. I have heard so many poor covers of Gunners, Van Halen, Metallica over the years (myself included when I was young) that there is a difference that comes with long term experience and strong skills development.Years 1–2. Open & Barre chords, arpeggios. Small riff patterns. Natural harmonicsYears 3–4 Intermediate lead work. More complex riff patterns. Intro to blues/ pentatonic scales and basic improvisation. Single and double bends, double stops etc. Start looking at pedal effects. Transposing keys.Years 5–8 Single and double finger tapping, whammy dives, pinch harmonics, sweep picking, large focus on effects/ pedals etc. Full improvisation of solos in all keys. Alternatively, instead of going full guitar god, you can heavily focus on developing exceptional tone- Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, Hendrix. After initially playing lots of 80s/90s guitar music, I eventually returned to this path.So in short I would expect someone to be able to play STP live well after about 4 years playing experience, Deep Purple more around the 6 years (where you would probably improvise all your own lead work.) Sure you could play it sooner, but would you do it well enough to get the nod of the guitarists and other musicians in the room? That is your choice. If you want to start a band asap I would do it with chord based music to begin with, then slowly increase the complexity of your songs.Good luck on the tunes!
