What was the impact of the French Revolution to the world?

The French Revolution was liberty, equality, fraternity, horror, mass-murder, romance, hunger, passion and some more mass-murder all rolled into one. Now, there are some who believe that the Revolution made the world a better place to live in and then there are some who believe (with a fierce passion) that all the Revolution ever did was f**k the world in the bum.But just like any event of any consequence in history, it did both of those things. Made some mess and cleared some up. I’ll break it down for you in bullets.Negative ImpactThousands of people executed during the Reign of Terror, courtesy of La GuillotineMore than 2 decades of war for FranceIt got rid of one monarch (Louis XVI) only to give rise to another one (Napoleon Bonaparte)Widespread hunger and poverty everywhere you lookedAll the wars made sure the peace in Europe was as fragile as everNow for the positive impact (where do I begin?)First of all, it plucked out Monarchy, root and stem, and gave the world a new form of governance - DEMOCRACY. If it weren’t for the Revolution, people would still be grovelling at the feet of obese kings. It put an end to the Clergy’s appalling tyranny. Priests were no longer allowed to parade themselves to be ‘holier than thou’The Revolution said NO to any preferential treatment. Everybody works. Everybody pays taxes. NO exceptions. It gave birth to the greatest literary movement of all time - Romanticism, where poets like William Wordsworth, John Keats, Shelly, Byron, Samuel Coleridge etc., filled the world with their magic. Essentially art, in all its beautiful forms, flourished.People (eventually) enjoyed a better life where they could educate their children, have equal job opportunities and not be treated like slave scum.Economy-wise things improved drastically. People started getting paid for the work they did and could afford the bare minimum required to sustain life. Most importantly, it gave people hope of a new life filled with new ideals and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.I hope I’ve answered your question… There’s definitely so much more to it than I’ve mentioned here but I’ve tried to summarize it as best as I could. Cheers and hope this helps =)-Sarah S.

Is a good writing mixture of passive and active voice or just active voice?

Definitely a mixture.Whenever you’re writing a sentence and don’t know whether you want to use an active or passive voice sentence, consider whether people care about the agent (the person who does the thing). We can all agree that the sentence the wall was crashed through is a piss-poor replacement for the car crashed through the wall. Because our listener DOES care about whether it’s the kool-aid man or a goddamn car. One of these is very dangerous, the other is refreshing. On the other hand, Last night, Doctor Conrad Murray found Michael Jackson dead is a piss-poor replacement for Michael Jackson was found dead last night, because it takes ages before we actually introduce something that people care about. Here, the passive voice equivalent is a much better sentence. But don’t take my word for it - also don’t take the word of writers for it, for they know not what they do. If you instead look at what good writers DO, you will find something interesting. Let’s take someone who was openly critical towards the passive. George Orwell.Orwell famously suggests the rule that you should never use the passive voice where you could use the active voice (Politics and the English Language). But in that work, he has more than twenty percent of his transitive verb constructions be passive constructions. That’s a lot.

What made the French so angry with King Louis XVI that they demolished the Monarchy and guillotined their King and Queen during the French Revolution?

Louis XVI was persuaded to finance and provide troops for the American Revolution, which cost France a great amount of money it had to borrow. The success of the American Revolution decreased British power and prestige but hurt France and its finances and economy in the process. The American Revolution further legitimized republican government at the expense of monarchical rule.Louis XVI spent too much money, did not obtain taxes from the nobility as he was advised to do by previous ministers, failed to communicate with the common people or their representatives, did not change with the times and was indecisive and weak. Absolute monarchs are supposed to control finances, nobles and revolutionary tensions with timely reforms, but Louis XVI let the expenses, inequities and oppressions of the previous reigns build to the breaking point. The Queen became unpopular due to her spending, extravagance, elaborate hairstyles, affairs and initially her failure to have children (which was the fault of her husband). The clergy, court, ministers and army were top-heavy with expensive aristocrats, many of whom lost touch with the people. The rising middle class was deprived of an appropriate share of political, social and financial power.Instead of working honestly for a just settlement of grievances and inequities, the King entered into correspondence with foreign powers in an effort to regain his control over France. The Royal Family tried to escape from France in disguise, but they were detected near the border and brought back to Paris. When their correspondence was discovered, it became clear the King did not intend to cooperate with the Revolution and needed reforms, but instead sought to fight his own people for control of France. This disloyalty to his people justified a conviction for treason and execution by guillotine.
