Takin Shsat This Weekend Oct 25 2014 Pls Answer These Questions

Why do Indians line up for disgusting movies like "Humshakals" and "Happy New Year"?

The more appropriate question would be, "why doesn't India produce more of what we would call serious cinema" or "Why doesn't a serious cinema work commercially in India". I am no expert on cinema, I just want to write a few points here that should be considered Indian cinema is not limited to Bollywood. You can find many high quality (albeit low budget) movies being made in Bengali, Marathi etc. Rampant censoring has stifled creative thinking. India's so called moral police is so convinced that movies shape who we are that people are not even allowed to smoke in screen. They are right, movies do shape who we are, but people are more likely to take away positives from a movie than the negatives. Due to suppression of negativity on screen, the positivity is never powerful enough to leave an impact. Schindler's list didn't make me wanna kill Jews or even Nazis, it only made me think about what one man could achieve even if the whole world was against him. Serious cinema is getting more audience these days. Pan Singh Tomar, Lunch box, Queen (not so serious, but off beat), Haider etc. have got critical acclaim as well as commercial successIndian society is currently in rather a mess. While younger generations are taking more and more to western culture, some traditional thinkers are coming up with new ways to prevent the westernization from happening. As a result the entertainment industry doesn't know who to cater to. I believe that in another 20 years, when urban Indians will be mostly westernised, we will get better movies and TV shows in India too. At present parents don't want children to see people kissing on screen, 20 years hence, that might not be the case. Access to International cinema is becoming easier by the day. So locally produced cinema is not as relevant as before. If you like Bollywood, watch. Otherwise watch Hollywood.. Or even Polish and Norwegian cinema, whose to stop you. This might not be very relevant to the question, still. People do flock to stupid movies in the US too. The kind of success that Avengers got was shocking. Apart from the visuals, it was a perfectly ordinary movie and it felt like a waste to me to have seen that in the theatre. Lastly, already said before, don't judge
