Taking A Non-destructive Testing Course

What are the NDT (non-destructive testing) courses available for study after completing a BE in civil engineering?

Future NDT conducts NDT certification as per the requirements of ASNT – SNT TC 1A and other standards. For more details about NDT Courses in Hyderabad

What are the advantages of doing a non-destructive test course? Where should I do it?

As our education system is unable to provide you skills needed to excel in the field graduated, it is essential that you should have certifications like NDT LEVEL 2. These are considered as skill based learning and getting into a job is easy for professionals. Also the field has more opportunities than compared to other jobs. The demand for ndt professionals keep increasing every day as more and more manufacturing companies are increasing the production. The best institute for doing your ndt Certification courses is TRINITY INSTITUTE OF NDT TECHNOLOGY BANGALORE. Read more about the institute on line or visit TRINITY NDT WEBSITE.

What is the scope for b.e mechanical after getting NDT level 2 (non- destructive testing) certification?

You can become a professional in NDT and gain experience in QA QC or NDT. Infact there are NO good courses that can fetch you good jobs after your mechanical engineering. In my view as there is lot of skill required to do Nondestructive testing NDT, the field can always accommodate more number of people than any other. Yes there is myth among the young engineers that there are no jobs even after they do NDT. Note that after you do NDT Level 2 certification you are required to gain relevant practical knowledge in NDT to make you employable at larger companies. You should have right practical skills to make employable. You need to choose right institute with good infrastructure and verify the trainers background and knowledge and practical exposure to NDT. There are ample number of jobs for NDT if you have good practical knowledge to offer you jobs. One positive factor about NDT is it the field that ever grows because it requires skilled manpower and the requirements are becoming stringent day by day to manufacture any engineering product and there is no critical engineering product that is accepted by the customer without Nondestructive testing NDT. Remember getting into job as soon as you have done your NDT certification and gaining experience is more important than keep doing certification courses without practical knowledge. Ultimately it the special skills that makes you employable than just certifications.

Would it be useful to take a non-destructive testing course after graduation? How likely is it that I am going to get settled based on this?

As I said, based on interest and field from where you belongs to( in which field you have done ur graduation)depends. After doing mechanical engineering, if you want to persue career in NDT, then do not expect high salaries initially as well as you have to leave your mechanical interests aside. But after having certain experience you would have ample opportunities in this field. Anyhow it will take some time to achieve higher.

How is the ndt life style? (non destructive testing/ quality control)?

I am about half way through Spartan College, im doing non destructive testing, and previous graduates have come to class and talked about the more or less 100 per year salaries but the they are always traveling. (One even said that years have gone by where he only got to spend a few weeks a year with his family.) I would really like to have a family down the line, and I have been deeply considering dropping out and starting a different career with something else. so far I have spent 12,000$ on this school. but that's all student loans and my parents are slightly helping me pay for those. I just dont know what to do. I thought this would be a good paying 9-5 job. I had no idea that in order to make a decent living i would have to be traveling so much. should i change my career choice, or is there really not that much traveling involved... . help?

Is there any scope in doing an NDT (non-destructive test) after mechanical engineering?

Try to choose a line, upto me NDT is sea. We learn only small portion in India. From aircraft to railway lines they do NDT.Now a days even DIPLOMA, ITI, MBA,BSC,MA,BA,10 & 12th class students do NDT Level II , later they do AWS-CWI.Try to go in the Engg core line. Think ahead - now a days too many pupil are there in this field. You have to think ahead. This ASNT Level II and CWI will not the end. Keep going in other Dept. Really dont waste ur degree. If u really need to start go for MS in Ndt or Materrial Science or M.Tech Welding Tech. Even my frnd is working in NDT field. BUt he is working in ISRO. Plz take note. Its doesnt mean if u study NDT Lev II with CWI. You can reach the top. Go for the better ride.

Is the course "Non destructive testing" Important for mechanical engineering? What's the importance?

Non destructive testing are group of methods which are used to test materials for defects like cracks, flaws, porosity etc. without breaking the test piece. This testing is important for Mechanical engineers but this is a professional course i.e. the person becomes professional/chartered in NDT methods.Demand for NDT inspectors is more now a days & these people get jobs easily & earn money more than usual.

Is any body has any idea about NDT (non destructive test for welding inspection?

For magnetic materials eg carbon steel, Magnetic Particle Induction (MPI) is normally used - a spray containing magnetic particles is sprayed onto the weld, and a magnet is held close by. The magnetic particles will be pulled into any cracks and they will be visible.

For non-magnetic materials eg stainless steel, usually the Dye Penetration (Dye Pen) method is used where a special red dye is sprayed onto the weld which will penetrate any cracks, and make them visible.

X-raying of welds - If there are several, or even hundreds of welds, usually a sample is x-rayed (or 'bombed'). It's usually 10% of butt welds are bombed, and if any faults are found then the percentage is increased. Bombing is the best method, but takes far longer, more expensive, and means large areas of plant are inaccessible during the x-ray exposures.

It's a matter of course that pipe-welds are normally hydro-tested also. That means the pipe-ends are blanked, the pipes are filled with water, any air is vented off, and the water pressure increased. The test pressure is usually 150% of maximum allowable working pressure for strength testing of welds, but this can vary widely depending on the client's specification

Also it depends on the kind of industry you're talking of. An oilrig (where my experience is)would usually do the things I've stated above. For the nuclear industry, or aircraft industry, the specs may be more stringent (for example 100% bomb, every weld gets it).

There's also various ultrasonic techniques (UT) that give an indication of how deep the weld is.

There's probably more techniques, but these are the main ones by far.

Is there any projects available for 3 months in non-destructive testing?

Non-destructive testing can’t be a project, it can only be a part of a project, a small part.In spite of best of Instrumentations and Laboratory equipments, the NDT still needs a long way to go. Particularly in Concrete testing. You can talk to reputed laboratories like SriRam Laboratories for your requirements.

Which subject is better for optional: Non-destructive Testing (NDT) or Maintenance Management?

It depends on your interest. if you are a management type of guy who is planning MBA after BE, then you should go for Maintenance Management, but if you are a technical person having passion for engineering, then I would say go for NDT. It is a very important part of any industry and every Mech Engg. should know how to perform various NDT.
