Taking My Dog With Me To College

Taking my Dog to College with me?

I know this may be a dog question, but I also asked in the Dog Section. But, it kind of involves some horse people thoughts:

So, I want a degree in something dealing with horses. Probably a vet. I am looking to rescue a dog in 1-2 years, and I would be a Sophomore or Junior, leaving for college in 3 or 2 years. Anyone know of any colleges, with horses, that allow you to have a dog? I remember reading about colleges having dorm floors/ areas that are pet allowed, but I don't know what type of pet or if it's true. So any ideas?

Should I get a dog after going off to college?

I got my dog when I had two years of college left. I was living by myself and my mother thought that "I needed another heartbeat in the house." She was right. I needed something to come home to. And something to get me out of the house. I was almost done with school so my schedule wasnt too crazy. I had most of my classes in the morning and I was able to be at home a lot with him. He was literally the best thing I have ever done for myself. That might sound so selfish, but he's my little joy! Whenever I'm stressed or nervous or mad or sad, I can just hug my little guy. And when he licks my face, all is right with the world for a little bit. My husband is in the Army and my little yorkie keeps me sane during the times we are apart!

But you'll have to live in an apartment or something, because dorms dont allow pets.

How can I bring my dog with me to college?

Depends on how you want to bring your pet, as company in off campus roommate depends upon your landlord, possibly, to the dorms most likely not same thing for classes, UNLESS you can provide reasons to NEED the dog for medical assistance then NO , as far as I understand it

Going away to college, miss my dog?

leave your dog something for him/her to sleep with that was yours-you'll be busy at college and that should keep your mind off your dog most of the time-you'll see your doggy on vacations and when your done with college you can take your dog with you to live again.. i'm sure the doggy will be missing you too-just hang in there it gets easier as the days go on.. at least you still have your dog... take care -best of luck in college - go UCLA

Will my dog miss me when I'm at college?

Edit
I'll be going to college in less than a year and I'm going to miss my dog sooo much.
But I'm more worried that she'll think I abandoned her. I feel terrible and like i'm an awful person.
She's with me almost all day and she sleeps with me too.

Everyone in my house gives her a lot of love and attention, so I'm not worried about her being lonely and not getting attention. I just don't want her to think I abandoned her :(

Did you bring a pet to college? How did it work out?

I did bring a pet with me to college.Wallace is my Sulcata or African Spurred tortoise. He’s a couple years old, and is very small for his species.Wallace eating his greensAdult Sulcata tortoise for reference, found on googleCaring for him has been equally difficult and rewarding. As he grew I knew I would have to keep designing enclosures for him. Originally I kept him in a 50 gallon breeder tank, and I made him an outdoor setup freshman year with a small fence in our backyard. He loves to eat grass and dandelions. This last summer he spent on the balcony of our new apartment, enjoying the sunshine and Texas weather. He eats a variety of vegetables and grasses, and loves to go on walks. With the winter coming I built him an indoor enclosure with plywood and 2x12 boards, which he is loving over the tiny tank I had him in for a few weeks. He will follow me on walks and eat from my hand, plus he appreciates back scratches.Tortoises are a lot of effort, and Wallace will one day be much bigger than the average pet.But we will figure it out, as we have before.Thanks,R.C.

I can't take my dog to college with me, so what do I do?!?

I'm going to Washington st, unv. In the fall.. They've got a strict no pet policy, and I've got a best friend who's a 1 year old little chihuahua. I love her more than anything. Don't know what I would do without her and that's only part of the problem. The big part is she's mine and I've got no one else to take care of her while I'm gone. Neither my mom or my dad. It looks like my only option would be a new home? But I can't stand the thought of not being able to see and not owning my baby and my friend. How could I give up the only one who's always there for me!? I can't stand it but I don't know what else to do! I can't throw away my college university experience because of my dog no matter how much I want to right now, I know that. But what are my options, do I have any? Has anyone else been in the same boat as me? Or have any ideas? I can't stand losing her..
By the way I KNOW I should have thought of this before I got her, I'm looking for help not a lecture.

Should I take my dog with me to college? She’s old and got depressed/low energy when I left for my freshman year. Also my family neglects her.

Since you want to avoid problems with your college and your college would want to violate the law, here is a practical solution for you.Get your dog registered as a service or emotional support dog.As a service dog, it’s considered a medical device under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Therefore housing cannot prevent you from having one.As an emotional support dog, it’s also a medical device and covered under Fair Housing Amendments Act and the Air Carrier Access Act.Both are allowed to fly as a passenger with you for free. It’s the law.Important Note: You do not need a doctor’s note for a service dog but you do need one for an emotional support dog. It is against the law for your college or any business to ask you why you have a service dog. Here is a link to get your dog registered:US Dog Registry - Service Dog Registration and SuppliesLast thing, I recommend that the service dog disability that you would want to claim that you have is schizophrenia, residual type. This was the former name given for disorganized thinking and later recognized as ADHD.While an administrator does not need to know, you do have an ADA compliance officer in the college so telling them that you have residual type schizophrenia won’t harm you but can give you extra time on examinations. You get to take your dog to your classes.Best of luck to you.

Will my dog forget me when I go to college?

My first dog, Lady had a litter of puppies in my room a few years ago. I kept the runt of the litter, who was not breathing upon birth. His first night alive, he spent sleeping on my chest.

He's about 4 years old now and I am leaving for college at the end of next month. We have 5 dogs at home, but Gerard is bonded to me. He sleeps in my room and EVERY time I come in the gate he freaks out! He starts like, whining and "talking"(My mom says) and runs and jumps around like a nutso!

Lol. But when I leave for college I can't come home for 4 months... Because freshmen have to stay on campus... So I'm afraid in that 4 month period he will forget me... And I really don't know what I'll do if he does... : (

Does anyone have any personal experiences with this?

Can't leave dog for college but don't want to stay at home?

While requiring freshmen to live on campus is common practice for campuses, it seems strange to me that they require students under 21 to live in the dorms.

The best advice I can offer to you is to continue living with your parents for a year and take classes at a local community college - you can stay with your dog and you can get some of your basics out of the way at a much lower price. After a year, contact your dream college's department of residential life and see if it is absolutely necessary for you to live on campus now that you are not classified as a freshmen and if any exceptions can be made.

A good way to "cheat the system" is to, during the summer before you begin college, settle down in an apartment and then tell the school that you cannot move into the dorms because you are under a lease.
