Teenage Diabetic Crisis

How can I get my type 1 diabetic adult child to care about his health?

Depending on your child's age and personality I would consider this.Teenage boys and young male adults often times tend to respond to shock.  If your child is a grown adult then the situation is different and you need to respect his autonomy (if this is your case then tell us so so we can respond more appropriately if you are interested). So, with a young adult I would consider showing him shocking images on the Internet of the consequences of unmanaged diabetes (amputated toes, feet, legs, blindness,  non-healing ulcers, dialysis from renal failure, etc.).Then I would show him examples of famous athletes and other prominent role models who are the picture of health and happen to be well-controlled diabetics. And finally I'd tell him, "You have diabetes.  It's a fact and there's nothing you can do about that fact.  But only you can decide how this fact is going to affect your reality, your health, and your happiness.  You have everything you need at your disposal to stay healthy, including my unconditional support because I have no doubt you can do this.  But only you can take charge of your own health.  So what kind of person, of the ones I have shown you, do you want to be?"But more important than any words one can tell his child about living a healthy life, nothing speaks louder and clearer than setting the example. So be sure you live the lifestyle you expect your child to lead.

I think I have diabetes but no one believes me, what should I do?

try going to a doctor and getting some blood or urine tests done. if you can't, pee into a cup and poor it on a sidewalk outside your home. return later (maybe a day or 2, not sure) and see if there are ants at your urine. if there are, you most likely have diabetes.
If you do, bring emergency sweets with you! sometimes your blood sugar goes down and you really need something to bring it back up before you pass out.

My teen age son is heading down the wrong path, any suggestions on how to get him back on track?

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your son's and your problems. While there is a frequent connection between a young person losing a parent and making bad choices due to anger or unresolved issues, that is not always the case.

You mention that his dad dies after an overdose. Am I right to assume that his dad had some emotional issues of his own that led to such an event? These could include clinical depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse issues, or overwhelming life stress he couldn't deal with in a healthier manner. The reason I ask this is because, as modern research has shown, frequently there is a genetic predisposition to those related to the afflicted person. Therefore, whether or not there is a direct connection between your son's unhealthy choices and his dad's death, there could be an increased chance that genetics could play a part (this would also include your side of the genetic history).

Since counseling by itself doesn't seem to be helping, and since he is having a loss of faith, I would recommend that you and your son see a qualified child psychiatrist (in case he needs prescription - not addictive medications. Like me, many child psychiatrists will also work with parents as active members of the treatment team. The doctor may also have a psychologist or therapist with whom he/she works or with whom they consult. A psychiatrist, in connection with your family doctor, can also do a medical evaluation to look for any health condition contributors and/or causes to your son's symptoms. There are many such conditions, including thyroid problems, diabetes, infections illnesses included sexually transmitted diseases.

Another thing a psychiatrist can help you with if things get to the point your son represents a danger to himself and/or others, is to help you get him admitted to an in-patient child/adolescent psychiatric treatment program, as well as in-patient residential treatment centers if long-term treatment is indicated.

You said your son has lost his faith. Pastoral counseling can often help with that issues as well as signs/symptoms of the consequences of the loss/doubt/anger that led to the crisis of faith in the first place.

I hope this helps you and your son, and I wish you both good health and peace of mind.

Is the testosterone nugenix FDA approved, and can a teenager take it?

Nugenix is not FDA approved. Currently, the FDA does not approve individual supplements, they set forth guidelines on how supplements can be manufactured, which Nugenix states they meet all those requirements. This applies to all nutritional supplements.

Nugenix is not intended for minors and should only be taken adults. Additionally, boosting free testosterone levels, which Nugenix does, will not make you grow taller. It does not contain hormones as previous posters have stated.

How does teen obesity affect ones future?

Yes, childhood obesity has a significant impact on adult health. It starts with children at younger and younger ages developing adult diseases. Diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes are no longer adult conditions. Once a child has been diagnosed it make sit even harder for an adult to lose weight and treat the disease. In addition, the emotional and psychological stress of childhood obesity can significantly affect someone throughout their entire life.

What are your personal experiences with Hanuman Chalisa?

One of my seniors, in her second year of engineering committed suicide. I was in my first year then and our hostel rooms were in the basement of an under construction block on the other side of the hostel campus. If we opened our room windows we could see thick shrubbery, trees and an eleven feet wall. It was 2001 and we didn't have cell phones or internet as common as now. There were power cuts too.Now imagine the state of mind of a home sick seventeen year old at that time and in that atmosphere. Not just me, almost all my mates were terribly scared during nights. To top that, we had to pass the room, in which our senior died, to go to the mess hall.It was then I remembered my little Hanuman Chalisa booklet. I would recite it daily without fail, for it gave me strength and courage. Some of my friends saw me reading from the booklet and asked what it was. I told them and happily shared it with them as well. They too felt a little comfortable after reading it and started reciting it daily. It was then I got a dream. In the dream, I was reciting Hanuman Chalisa when someone started abusing and mocking me. She was telling me, “Why do you even bother to read it? It does nothing and you are misleading and lying to others about it” and some other nasty stuff. I got angry and replied saying that, “ You are wrong, Hanuman Ji himself comes and listens to it whenever we recite it. I'm not lying to anyone, it's the truth”. And suddenly there was this huge monkey, with a yellow shawl, having “Sri Ram” written all over it and with Thiru Naamam on its forehead. It comes to me and tells me “Don't bother what others say, learn it, recite it, and I'll be there”. I woke up right after that. After 16 years, the dream is still fresh in my mind. Reciting Hanuman chalisa gives me peace and strength when I'm weak, gives me hope when I'm down, gives me happiness when I'm sad. It does so for everyone who recites it whole heartedly.Hope I answered your question.Shri Ram Bhakta Hanuman ki Jai

What blood glucose level constitutes an emergency?

Lucille - With Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) about 30%-80% of women have insulin resistance which can result in diabetes. As you know, both low blood glucose (BG) level, usually below 60 can result in hypoglycemia and even shock while high BG levels (usually above 600) can lead to coma and death.
You probably know that there are ways to become less insulin resistant. For example:
Increase exercise. Exercise is proven to reduce insulin problems.
Improve your diet.
Switch from refined carbohydrates to a complex carbohydrate, low glycemic diet
High ratio of soluble fiber to insoluble fiber.
Improve quality of fat
Avoid saturated fat
Avoid trans fats
Increase monosaturated oils
Increase omega 3 oils (fish, flax).
Smaller, more frequent meals.
Reduce alcohol intake.
Have mixed meals of carbohydrate, protein and fat.

You are wise to see your doctor tomorrow. Meanwhile, do as you plan and reduce carbohydrates, especially simple ones which rapidly cause blood sugar to rise.
