What happens if you tell your therapist you have suicidal thoughts?
Why don't you want to get thrown into a mental ward? That's what they exist for: people like you. You won't be in a state hospital with crazy killers or schizophrenics, nor anyone that has to be there for the rest of your life. You will be placed in an adolescent depression unit and required to stay there for a certain amount of time depending on your state (where I live, the earliest a person can get out is 72 hours - if it's going well and they're showing improvement). You will definitely get thrown into a ward for an attempt, assuming doctors or police find out. Just thoughts, not likely unless your plan is pretty well-thought out and you guarantee that you will carry it out. If you are lucky enough to get placed into a mental ward, (some places won't admit someone with only suicidal thoughts) you will be specially evaluated by a team of medical professionals and will meet other people your age who are experiencing the same type of depression and self-harming thoughts that you do. You will be prescribed psychiatric medication for sure and likely diagnosed with a type of bipolar disorder. Part of your therapy may include group therapy sessions with these people, where you will come up with strategies together as to how to prevent carrying out harming thoughts should you experience them when you're released. Conversations with these people will be so valuable, because for the first time probably ever, you will be talking to people who completely understand where you're coming from and can likely learn a lot about yourself and your situation. Anyway, read The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. Also, research her. She's interesting. She was a famous poet and author who experienced the same thoughts, but was never able to recover and actually ended up killing herself.
This isn’t an easy thing to do, so kudos to you for taking this step! It means you know you need help and are willing to do hard things to make sure you get better. The most important thing I can say about talking to parents about suicide/depression is to be totally honest. Let them know you have something important you need to talk with them about and let them know what’s been going on, how long you’ve been dealing with it, etc. Make sure to also explain to them some of your thoughts and how they effect you. Let them know you need help from them in deciding what the next step is. The important thing is to remain open with them if they ask questions and don’t be offended if they don’t know what to say at first. It can be a difficult thing to process. Let them know you understand they may need time, you just knew you had to tell them what was going on. It’s super important when dealing with suicide/depression to not go through it alone. It can feel terrifying and perhaps even shameful having to tell someone your thoughts about yourself and life. I get it, I’ve totally been where you are. But the thing is, you are brave for telling someone! You are not alone and there is nothing shameful about needing help and having a difficult season. We all go through bad times at some point or other.
