The Great Gatsby And Medea Comparison Essay

I hate the Bible and Quran. What should I do?

You ask for advice on what to do as a hater of the Bible and the Quran,The wisest advice I see here is to ask yourself why that is so.When we hate something it usually means we are afraid of it. The question then is, “Why am I afraid of this?” It might be a legitimate reason, it might not be.If you have read both and are convinced, having given them appropriate thought, that you should discard one or both, then walk away, as people have said.If you haven’t read them, if you have skimmed them, if you have been told they are no good, if you have only heard negative stories about people who read these books, perhaps you are just exercising prejudice. It would be good to rethink your views.Something to consider if you haven’t read the Bible, or if you read it when you were young and not as well informed about life, is that the Bible isn’t only full of “feel good” stories. There are a lot of tales of what went wrong when people left God out of the equation. And there are stories of violence where it seems that God told the Israelites to war against people and destroy them and their cities. I have my theories, but all I can say is that the same Bible which preserves these stories also tells me to turn the other cheek and not return evil for evil. Our modern aversion to violence almost entirely comes from the Bible. And that brings me to the last part of my comment. I can’t speak for the Quran, but I can for the Bible, and I would remind you that so much of our society comes from the Bible that, if you don’t have some knowledge of the Bible you are cutting yourself off from cultural understanding of the West. At University I had to sit through lectures on Christianity so that the class could understand mediaeval literature, lectures on Christianity so that the class could understand aspects of modern literature, and lectures on Christianity so that the class could understand the great social movements in the US and the British Empire through the 17th to 20th Centuries. Without that, our undersanding would have been shallow and inadequate.Don’t rob yourself of something important because you are uncomfortable with the sources.
