The Next Social Network

Are social networks dead? If yes, what's next?

Emphatically NO.Perhaps FB etc, will die or morph - who cares.BUT! People are fed up or corporate PR and advertising and tuning out the standard corporate message in favour of personal recommendations. This is where social media comes in. In Asia, reputation (or 'Face' in China) is all important. Asia is a fast growing market and word of mouth is how their society has been built. Originally, developing countries did not have TV and print media to persuade them and word of mouth was how businesses were built. Shoddy suppliers went out of business fast.Fast forward and these countries still rely on reputation, more so than the West which built brands then trashed the brand value by getting the product made on the cheap in Asia.Customers (especially younger ones) are wise to this and are also more niche oriented in a saturated market so they seek quality instead of Walmart rubbish and want the recommendation to come from a trusted source not a junk mailer catalogue. So 'Trusted' social media is the upcoming thing. Ello is one example.FB has become another brand which 'sold out' to the capitalist corporate agenda, so the young consumer has left the place to their parents.

Is Wheelook the next big social network?

Wheelook will be two years old in August and IMHO, if you are asking this question, says it all about the platform. Being a heavy Online Social Networks user, this is the first I have heard of it! Checking this with other connections, the majority were of the same opinion as myself, if it hadn’t got major hype and online chatter within it’s first six months, shows the lac of appeal. The platform is based on helping people to be famous online and gain rewards from it. Online fame will not pay the bills except for the rare few and even fewer of those have a career lasting more than 18–24 months. We need to educate our children and future generations that there is life beyond the mobile and online fame and that they need skills that will help them through their life, not just a 6 month or so burst of fame.

What is going to be the next big social network?

Not a social network......at least in the traditional definition that we define a social network by. While Facebook surely isn't disappearing at any time in the near future, we can be sure that whatever the next big Internet community is will not simply be a different version of what we have today. The next "big thing" is never an iteration of what we already have today. Why? Because if it was, then one of the major incumbent companies would create it. But it never is (although there are a few exceptions to this statement). When IBM was king, they didn't see the vision that Apple did when Apple released the Macintosh, and as a result they lost the personal computer war.The incumbent phone manufacturers didn't understand the importance of multi-touch technology or the capacitive touchscreen, and as a result most of them lost their market share when Apple came on the scene with the iPhone in 2007.Google didn't foresee a global social network as they grew and expanded into a tech giant, and as a result a random Harvard undergraduate named Mark Zuckerberg created the world's social network (and Google hasn't come close to catching up since). The next "iPhone" won't be another smartphone. The next big "Google" won't be another search engine. And the next Facebook, or big social network, won't be another social network.

What will be the next big idea after social networks, and why? This question is not about the usability of the social networks.

Interesting set of answers. One next big idea is social search which Google has been trying desperately to crack but without success. Let me try to explain why do I think so. Google's legendary Page Rank Algorithm is based on inbound links to a web page. There are several other factors which go in but it's essentially based on the link popularity. This has worked very well for more than a decade now and was well suited for the times. Consider the present situation, user generated content is exploding and we have opinions, write ups and photos being shared by millions of people in real time on social media and Google bots can't even reach them. I have personally come across example where a viral blogpost got 1000s of reweets and shares on FB within no time whereas Google was still to index and rank it. The content reached its audience solely through social media and peer to peer referrals. Here is a thought experiment:What if Facebook, Twitter or some future social network builds a search engine which is based on no. of shares, retweets, likes rather than link popularity. Intuitively I feel that content shared or voted by x no. of people is much more powerful indicator of quality than 5 inbound links. I have come across many rumors that Facebook maybe secretly working on a search engine. Can't wait to see :)

What’s next after Facebook? Another ‘social network’?

Yes, Facebook can be outgrown. We can share photos on Facebook. But why do we use Instagram, Snapchat then? Even though Facebook has 2 Billion users. How many do you think open it daily, atleast I don't. As new generation need new and different ways to communicate, social networks every generation use changes. Some are exception. We are on Facebook because we have to( everybody is there so), but we use other social networks like Quora, Snapchat, 9GAG because we like them. Failure of Google + tells us that people want new creative ways to communicate. Consider Snapchat, every company owned by Mark Zuckerberg now has copied Stories and Filters. Did that stopped people from using Snapchat? No, it didn't.China. Facebook is not even accessible there. Assume if a new social network is launched where everyone can register something managed by UN. Who will have more number of users? Coming back to China. WeChat the most used social network in China. It can do any possible thing for which you can imagine. From taxi booking, to making an appointment to a doctor, you can call a plumber from that app, chat with your friends, find someone new to date. So it lefts quite a small time for other apps or services to slide into its place. If WeChat went global who would even use Facebook.

What does Social Network mean?

A social network is a network, like facebook, is where people socially communicate. By chat, posting on wall, etc. It connects people with friendship, common interests, and things like that. You pretty much have the network theory, and social relationships combined into one. Social Networking.

A social network is a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes", which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige. That would be an actual definition.

Social networking speech?

You start your speech with words like 'facebook, orkut, twitter,bebo,hi5' and then I bet, you will be able to see the glimmer of animation on the faces of the listeners. Like 'Orkut ! Facebook ! Hi5 ! Twitter ! Social networking sites have completely transformed our lives. From gossiping with strangers to sharing pictures and videos with friends; from updating your status to reading the status messages of your pals - the list of tasks that can be performed is endless'

And then you can continue talking about interesting things. In the next two paras discuss the pros and cons of social networking.

What are the risks and benefits of social networking?

the advantages of social networking can be summed up to creating relations.

What is the next new social media app for 2018?

I don’t follow app developer activity closely enough to predict. What I WISH for, however, would be an app that partners AI and Blockchain in a manner that would accelerate human relationships and build trust in a marketing function. The net effect would be the reduction of distractions, allowing people to focus on things that matter most… they’ve confidently anticipated and dealt with anything that could adversely impact their lifestyles.
