Last November I joined a ship to complete my contract as Cadet, I was due to sign off in May end. Everything was going good till mid of may but then after that I started feeling exhausted because of work and this long time.We reached Houston on the third week of May and left but had no news about the next voyage so eventually ended up on anchorage. My due date came and passed but still no news from the office, I wanted to sign off so bad that it became difficult for me to work but somehow I pushed myself. Finally on 4th June we reached Port Arthur and I was happy that I can finally go home now. Out of happiness I went to shore to buy gifts for my friends and family but as you know, life's not that easy.On my return my world shattered, captain informed me that I've missed my immigration (long story behind that, lot of miscommunication). I tried all possible way to get my immigration done as I was required to be at home now but nothing good happened. Captain said, that he has now cancelled my tickets and I'll have to wait for another 20 days until next port and that was my breaking point I nodded and came to my room, I saw my packed luggage and tears started flowing down. I locked myself in the bathroom, opened tap and cried out my heart for 5 minutes until I felt good.For the next 2 days whenever anyone asked about why didn't I sign off, my heart used to sink and it felt terrible. I wanted to go home to see my Girlfriend and family after 6 months, I desperately wanted to see them. To add to my misery, one of the crew member laughed as wanted me to stay for more, He thanked his god for doing so, all this in front of me and my heart sank again.Those two days I blamed myself for going out and realised that I was at fault. Now, that I have to stay for 18 more days, I decided that I won't feel bad about it, whatever happened it was my past and I won't let it ruin my life anymore.I moved on.This is my best sea story, as it gave me a life long lesson, it taught me quite a few things and will always stay in my heart, for ever.Cheers!!!
What does "Ahoy Matey" mean?
This phrase definately must come from the seaman’s tradition! “Ahoy” has for centuries been a way that a sailor will use to call out to another sailor or to draw the attention to an up and coming sighting of land (“land AHOY!”) . So then “Matey” is also a way that a sailor woukd have referred to the ship ’s mate and the term has now been conned to refer to someone recognised as a friend. (guessing that the Captain and his mate would have formed an awesome-twosome!)So then putting the two words together would imply “look there my friend” or then a slightly impish way of saying “my friend “ whilst being inoffensive.I would say its definately a very colloquial expression and not therefore commonly used these days. I have heard that it is common for Australians to speak to their male friends in this way.(As you speak it comes to mind how Mom and I used to read the pirate story … Captain Pugwash” to my little brother and your quote rings in my ”eerrrs”-matie!”)
