The Stomach Flu Is Going Around The Daycare. Am I Going To Get Sick With It Too

Am I safe to hang with friends if the stomach bug is going around?

So the stomach bug has been going around my school kinda, mostly it's going around a daycare that 3 of my friends work at. Only one of them got sick with the stomach bug, but my other friend just has s cold but is on antibiotics I didn't hang out with anyone last night cause I was too scared, I have a fear of throwing up. But tonight my friends want to hang, is it too risky to hang with them?

Will my baby get sick in daycare?

Yeah. Pretty much they will. LoL. I don't want to discourage you from sending your kid, but these things happen. Kids can be gross and they carry germs like any human. The positive is that after experiencing any sickness it very well will boost their immune system and allow their bodies to be prepared for the next attack. Not only that, YOU’LL know how to handle it. Also, if you send them to a great school, the administration/teachers should be proactive in letting parents know when there is a sickness going around. Now, I'm not talking about the common cold, but if there’s a fever, flu or stomach viruses in more than one or two of your kids, parents should know. Also, find out how often the staff cleans the tables, toys or any surfaces in the facility. And what products are used. You want to be certain that you send your kid to a facility where the staff are taking the appropriate steps to keep sicknesses at bay. Also, find out about the sickness policies and/or what the policy is for kids who aren’t immunized. These are definitely important things to know especially if you are new to any kind of dayschool/childcare environment your child will be in. I promise you though, the benefits of sending them to a dayschool/childcare facility outweighs the horrors of sicknesses. Do your research and relax. They'll be ok.

The stomach flu is going around the daycare. Am I going to get sick with it too?

I work at a daycare with infants, and we had three (!) kids go home early today because of vomiting/diarrhea. Since they're so young, I was in close contact with them throughout the day (feeding them, changing diapers, playing), and not only that, but one of the sick ones had a diarrhea/blowout diaper that leaked all over me while I was holding him (sorry if that's TMI). :/

So I'm afraid I'm gonna catch the stomach flu from them, and I really, really don't want to because my girlfriend (who lives 2 hours away) was planning on coming up and spending the weekend here.

What do you think my chances are? Am I gonna catch it? Is there something I can do to prevent myself from getting sick? Help me! :)

Shoes off at Daycare?

Yes, I would be worried as well.

1. Shoes should always be taken off, especially in the baby play areas. Shoes only kept on where kids will not be on the ground. My daughters daycare doesn't allow shoes anywhere in the daycare. Each child has a cubby in the entrance and shoes go off there. The workers are shoe free. Main reason is because of germs and my daycare said expecially because it is easy for little kids crawling around to get ring worm because of dirty shoes.

2. The changing situation, yes and no. No, it shouldn't be done in a common play area. Yes, sometimes there are emergencies where it would be better to stay there then leave. Especially if the diaper is leaking, not enough people to watch the other kids, etc.

3. Call some other daycares around your area, check out their rates and see if they offer a free tour and list of policies and rules/regulations. Now your child has been in daycare you know what you are looking for. Daycares vary greatly between in home care and a big establishment. Personally speaking, I like the in home daycares because it is more one on one time.

You are right that your child will get sick more often in daycare and it's good to build up his immune system. But I would make sure the employees are washing their hands regularly and sanitizing the areas appropriately.

Working in a daycare while pregnant?

Hello all,
I currently work in a childcare center that does drop in childcare, as well as full and part time regulars... At this center my 4 year old daughter and i have been sick 5 times in 2.5 months.. My boss makes us cover our own shifts if we get sick which is near impossible because the subs rarely answer the phone so she will make us come with a fever and i have also known 3 people who've had to come throwing up including the cook.. Recent example... The stomach flu was going around in the center and nobody could get their shifts covered so people who were sick still had to come. I recently found out i am pregnant and am wondering what i should do. I am the lead teacher in our wobbler classroom (12 months-24months) where our biggest child weighs 40 pounds and our smallest weighs 17... wechange our kids diapers 5 times a day and as needed with a 4:1 ratio up to 16 children at a time... And i am constantly picking up 5-6 children an hour, bending over to pick up stray toys and constantly cleaning food from the floors from meal times and other things as well i am constantly moving even at nap time where we have a page and a half cleaning check list to go through. I feel that this job is too much stress and physicality for someone who is a pregnant mother of a four year old. My fiance thinks i am just being a baby. But by the end of the day i just want to pass out because of the constant stress and noise (8-16 kids on my half of the room separated by a short wall with twenty 3 year olds on the other side)also drop in care so there is always children screaming all day because they are not used to being dropped off. cant pass out ... When i go home i have to make dinner for my daughter, bathe her and play and then put her to bed as well because her dad works nights and weekends... So i never have a chance to rest... Wish he would let me slow down a bit or try to help out more but he wont even do the dishes or take out the garbage. Desperately in need of advice

If a child isn’t in daycare or school, is catching the flu completely preventable?

As long as there is any contact at all with the outside world, I seriously doubt it.I had some relatives who lived a very self-contained existence and rarely left their home; over the span of a decade, they would venture out only for doctors’ appointments and the odd run to a restaurant drive-thru. Weeks would pass without them even going beyond their little patio. If anyone were insulated from viruses, you’d think it would be them, but they got colds and even the flu with surprising regularity. Likely the isolation wasn’t doing their immune systems any favors. The very little contact they did have…those fast food workers, the medical waiting rooms, even the repairpeople who came to the house…seemed to be more than enough.I feel for frustrated parents who have kids in preschool and early elementary school, whose kids seem to come home with a new pathogen every week. I’ve lived it, especially during preschool and kindergarten, and it hits me especially hard because of my childhood cancer treatment. The good news is that it does seem to taper off as the kids get older; we’ve gone from being sick every couple of weeks to once or twice a year.

Can a baby get the same stomach bug twice in a row?

My 7 month old son got sick a week ago (Thursday) with typical stomach bug symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea). About two days after he got sick, I got sick, then my husband. For each of us it lasted about 2 days. Then, on Tuesday, we got a call from his daycare that he had diarrhea and a fever. I took him to the doctor and he said he had an ear infection, which could cause the diarrhea. He gave him an antibiotic. Of course, that gave him diarrhea as well. His poor bottom is bright red and he is in pain from the awful diaper rash. He still has a very small appetite and I've had trouble getting him to eat much since he first got sick. Finally today, I thought we were turning a corner and getting better. He took an entire bottle and had a semi-normal diaper.
And then, just as I gave him his last bottle before bed, he gagged and vomited the entire bottle. I bathed him again and he vomited again!
Is he just not over the first bug, or could it be circulating again?

I’ve noticed a trend of parents ordering Ubers to pick up their young children from daycare, school, etc. Would you do this? Why or why not?

I would not. Why?Uber drivers do not pass through any sort of anti-child molester certification, to my knowledge, and they certainly do not engage in as stringent of a background check as teachers or daycare professionals do.If it was me, I could count on maybe being able to fight or think my way out of a bad situation. My kid has no such capability, not against an adult who may well be malicious.Forget that for a second though. Say the uber’s GPS sends them to the wrong place. My kid ain’t going to know how to direct the uber driver. Then what? The uber driver’s probably going to do the right thing and talk to the police or return the child to the daycare. But what if they say to themselves ‘there’s no proof a kid was in my car; the uber service only knows that someone ordered this car. If I cancel the uber, I’m in the clear,’ and then they drop my kid off on the side of the road somewhere? What if?That’s probably the easiest way to bundle this up.I would not trust an uber driver with my child because when I play ‘what if’, I get a lot more bad outcomes than good ones.

My daughter was sent home from school for being sick. Should I send her to school tomorrow? She has a 100-degree fever and complains of nausea, but she’s already missed eight out of eleven days altogether.

Generally speaking, your daughter should wait going back until she is 24 hours fever free. I have a story on why.My sophomore year of high school, I missed a week and a half of school due to a nasty bout of strep throat and I decided to go back, despite a fever of 101 degrees. Throughout the coming days, I noticed that I had a weird red rash on my arm and just prescribed it to heat rash.Fast forward to the next week, I woke up at 6 am and was completely covered, literally from my scalp to my toes in this horrendous rash. I went to my mom, who determined it wasn’t chicken pox (I haven’t had chicken pox ever) and we went to the doctor, who diagnosed me with scarlet fever and I ended up missing two weeks more of school. My doctor asked what school I went to and when I told her, she mentioned that one other person was diagnosed with scarlet fever from my school a couple days back. However, after missing close to four weeks of school, I still maintained high grades (as I did some work at home when I wasn’t sleeping) and all of my teachers and peers were grateful that I chose not to go to school as they did not want to get sick from me.I would never encourage missing school, but I also think that until your daughter is completely free from being sick, she should be at home. It’s better than she get over whatever she has than go back and possibly get even more sick.
