Billing insurance can be very complicated for mental health therapists. Benefits for mental health and subtance abuse care have, historically, been low and some plans offered no coverage. The Mental Health Parity Act has helped the situation, but there remains a reluctance and resistance to pay for these services. Additionally, the codes required for billing claims to insurance companies don’t always match the actual services provided by every therapist. Many plans carve out their mental health benefits and contract with a specialty provider network. Therapists must participate in the provider network to keep or attract patients who are plan members. However, these networks may not be accepting new providers when the therapist inquires and the reimbursements from network plans may require heavy discounts. This creates a dilemma for therapists who offer sliding scale rates. These are some of the issues that make insurance difficult for mental health therapists. If the work required to bill insurance exceeds the compensation, some therapists pull out of the wagon train. This is understandable, but it prevents patients from accessing care and inhibits a growing a practice.

The billing services that process the claims to all the dozens of insurance companies generally charge the doctor 10-12% of the payment. That's after the doctor has signed a contract with the insurance company to accept a negotiated reduced rate per session which is shrinking. Bottom line, dealing with health insurance companies is a colossal hassle for just about any medical practice, especially for psychiatrists and psychologists. It's so much easier just to take cash. This helps to preserve their mental health.

By having a cash only business they don't have to employ an entire back office of insurance billing employees. They don't have to worry about fee reductions, they don't have to deal with your insurance. By staying cash only they are able to accept non insured patients at the same rate as insured patients, as opposed to the usual insurance based billing of the insurance company paying much less for it’s patients with the uninsured patients basically subsidizing everyone else’s care. They obviously are able to find enough business just taking cash only, and don't have to take insurance. Cash only (along with concierge service) is the way psychiatry is going. The insurance companies have basically made it to hard to deal with insurance. If you want someone who will take your insurance try a government funded clinic- they usually take insurance, but you will likely not like the service provided as much as what you will get paying cash. That’s what you get in America- a capitalist based, pretty much free market (for non emergencies).

How can I make myself able, to accept health insurance payments from Massage Clients?

There are textbooks created to help understand how to properly set up your practice to accept insurance payments. The three main categories you need to determine are
1. Motor Vehicle personal injury
2. Workers Compensation injury
3. Major Medical Health Plans/Insurance

The first is the best coverage, the second is good coverage and the third is cumbersome. Medicare/Medicaid are a waste of time, unless you are in a medical office that does the billing for you.

Your question addresses the third category. Depending on the state you are in and/or the insurance company that is offering benefits, it may be worth the extra time and effort to accept these plans for billing.

The following site leads to a book that is adequate for understanding most of what is needed to set up and begin accepting insurance. Give yourself 3-6 months of study and development of necessary forms before taking on your first Health plan patient.

In any of these cases, the patient will need the following before insurance will even consider payment:
1. Physician's Referral/prescription (MD, DC, DO)
2. Medical necessity
3. Plan: number of sessions, duration, frequency, goals
4. NPI number & completed CMS-1500 form for billing

This book will teach you all about how to set up insurance billing in your practice. There are others out there, but this is very informative for the price.

It is possible to develop a medical massage practice going to people's homes, but it will take some time to develop it.

How does a business start accepting insurance as payment?

I work for a small massage therapy center in Philadelphia, and we are exploring the option of accepting insurance plans as payment to generate more business. I've looked around online on many different provider websites and none have any information on how to go about accepting insurance.

This is all new to me, and if anyone can point me in the right direction, that'd be great. Thanks!

How do I bill no fault insurance as a massage therapist in NY?

First, you must be licensed to provide the services that you are providing. I am not sure that no-fault recognizes a massage therapist as a medical provider. If it does, which it probably does,, then you must obtain an assignment of benefits from your patient. This allows you to deal directlywith the insurance company.

Then, in order to bill, go onto the the NY State Insurance Department webside, download an NF-3 (No Fault Verification of Treatment Form, which is the proscribed no-fault bill) and then send it into the appropriate insurnace company. It is very important that you have a mailing practice in place, where you can be sure of when a bill is mailed. This can be done by certified mailing, using a mailing log form from the post office, or simply denoting a file contemporaneously with billing.

You should become familiar with the workers' comp fee schedule. This way you bill correctly. You want to bill using the appropriate CPT Code and bill the appropriate amount.

Then, when benefits get denied, you should have a lawfirm commence litigation for you. Do not submit to the arbitration forum, put it into litigation. If you contact me privately, I will provide some firms that are good at this.

Also, do not get discouraged when insurance companies deny your claims. They will do so until you show them that you will challenge them. You will get paid for nearly all your claims in Court, provided that you are licensed to provide the services rendered, and that you keep good mailing records.

Do not take any State Farm patients. State Farm will likely allege that you are really a front for lay people that are benefiting from your billing and tie you up in litigation. When they make these accusations, all insurance companies take notice and will want to see how it resolves itself b/c if you walk away, they will do the same thing, or if you loose, then you will be estopped from challenging the issue with other insurance companies.

Ask the best physician you trust for referrals. Check them out If that's not a match, tell them politely and ask them for referrals. If that Dr would not give you one, you don't want to continue seeing him/her anyway.Repeat 1-3 until you find a good one. When you ask for referrals, ask "who would you see if you or your family is sick?"

Psychologist and insurance?

Hello,

You should confirm with your insurance. Like the others stated, some insurance plans cover mental health charges, some don't. I suggest you make sure about the coverage before you proceed in seeing a psychologist and if you are concerned about charges. Yes, the appointment charges can be high. So, check first.

Hope it helps!
Good luck and take care!

Will online doctors accept insurance?

I would like to see an online doctor because I feel the ones around here don't have the ability, qualification, or just any sense to properly assess and assist. I already know it's legal so don't give me any crap about that please or I will give you the DEA website showing my proof because up until a year or two ago it was illegal, but you need to know what your talking about to answer. So, know your laws and then we can discuss it.

A recommended site would be nice, but I'm still going to do my own research and check the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Need to know why doctor and prescriptions will be legit.I'm already on two controlled substances (schedule IV) so I'm not someone looking for opiates. I just need to speak with more qualified doctors. I have NOT been doctor shopping, been with the same one for over 7 years, so please don't go making accusations. You don't know me or my situation. You wouldn't want to see a doctor in this area either. Trust me. So any advice at all is GREATLY appreciated. Any rules or requirements I may not know about. Places to steer clear from for unethical practice. Anything at all about seeing a doctor online would be very helpful.

My main question is will my insurance Blue Cross Blue Shield cover for the online consultation? Will they write the scheduled drugs I'm on or put me on a different one if need be? I'm worried they won't, but I have no experience with this and am not sure. Please know what you are talking about and post your sources of information. Thanks everyone very much in advance for their time and help! I will choose a best answer and give five stars to the person that can help me the most as I'm just starting to do the research. Thanks again!
