I took a short course of course of prednisone at high dose for a medical situation, under a doctor’s supervision. A pleasant side effect was an increase in flexibility and motivation. Though the flip side was insomnia. Kind of a low-grade mania. Kind of cool but NOT, I repeat, NOT for long term. I has to be a short course (1 week or you suffer significant bad side effects)) and then tapered in lower dosages over another week. If you don’t, you can die. Literally. Best done ONLY UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION. High doses deplete the adrenal glands and if you suddenly stop, your adrenal glands cannot take up the slack and things will go downhill fast. You also shouldn’t do it more than once every 6 months.

You see, Xanax and Benadryl are both central nervous system (CNS) depressants. They can slow both your respiratory and heart rate. Alcohol is a CNS depressant as well. For that matter, so are opiates such as Vicodin and Oxycontin. It is possible to depress your central nervous system right to death without even trying very hard. True story: I was working in a hospital a few years back and a gentleman came into our ER after suffering a painful injury. He was given opiates for his pain. Opiates make you drowsy. A couple hours later another nurse saw him, and because he was still in pain she gave him more opiates. This made him really drowsy now and he fell asleep. Nobody checked on the gentleman for a couple hours, and when they did he was dead. Why? He had Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which means the structures in his upper airway close when he falls asleep and he needs a machine called a CPAP to keep his airway open so he doesn't choke to death. Normally, when our bodies realize we are choking, our brains send out a signal to start coughing and moving around a bit to open up that airway a little so we can breath again. With his central nervous system so depressed, that natural reflex didn't work and the man choked to death in his sleep. There was hospital error in this case in that they gave him too much opiate based medicine and failed to put him on his required CPAP machine. My long winded rambling point? Nine out of ten times mixing a little benadryl and your regularly prescribed dose of Xanax won't hurt you. I've done it myself when the pollen count got high, and I lived to tell the tale. Yours is a more complicated question than it may appear on the surface. Discuss it with your doctor before taking the two. Your physician may recommend another antihistimine or tell you flat out never to mix the two. Better safe than sorry.

My experience with medications like hydroxyzine is that sensitivity to side-effects varies with body weight and gender. For some reason women seem more susceptible, although it’s possible that lower average body weight of women is confounding my experience on that point.Hydroxyzine is chemically related to anti-histamines and is sometimes prescribed for allergic symptoms of runny nose. In medical jargon it has a “anticholinergic side-effect profile”; some of which these effects are intended … others are not desired effects depending on the patient’s complaint.
