What should happen to a school bus monitor who forcefully opens a child's lunch box and takes food from them and then sits there and eats it in front of the child they took it from?

I’d say document it, then submit copies of your account to every School Board member with a cover letter asking for their response by a certain date. Follow up. Ask how they intend to handle the incident. Don’t back down. Chances on the person will be fired, which is what you want. AND the record will reflect his/her conduct.

Another student hit my son in his privates on the school bus, now my son may need surgery. Who is responsible?

I would contact an attorney. The boy hitting your son in the privates could of actually had charges filed on him for that incident. If the school bus driver was aware they were having a confrontation and did nothing to stop it they are at fault for not doing their job. If it was a quick incident and the bus driver had no time to respond then it is that other boy and his family could be sued to pay the cost of damages, pain and suffering, reimbursement for work missed. If you haven't already filed a report with police, I would start there and then go to an attorney, they will be able to tell you your sons rights and yours to get reimbursed for your missed pay. The school should have a video from the bus surveillance and an incident report. Your attorney would be able to get a hold of them.

School bus attendant training?

If the uniform is for the black pants and white shirt, then I would abide by that :) I'd gone to and searched "school bus monitor training" and the topics of training usually include the roles and responsibilities of the attendant, emergency preparation, student loading and unloading, and children with special needs.

Each school district may have their own requirements and regulations pertaining to procedure and school bus monitors, but this website is from a "head start" program and the training of their bus monitors:

Even if you're not required to get certified in first aid and cpr (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), please consider doing so to become that much more prepared for unexpected, urgent situations that may arise.

With regard to the basic duties of a school bus attendant (or "monitor"), the site,, has some general information (though the site is *not* for school or professional research as the url/uniform research locator is a ".com" which means commercial or for-profit): and can type into search "bus monitor responsibilities" or "the duties of a bus attendant" or such.

What are all the safety features on a school bus?

Taking a bus to school is the safest way to go, statistics show. Every year school buses carry some 24 million students and collectively travel more than 4 billion miles. Considering how many kids the buses carry and the distance they cover, deaths on the road are extremely rare. School buses have a rate of 0.2 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The rate of deaths in automobiles is eight times higher. That's how safety officials like to put it, because it's a statistically accurate way of comparing risks. Here's another way to look at it: Over a span of 11 years, from 1994-2004, a total of 71 passengers on school buses died in crashes. In the year 2004 alone, traffic accidents killed 31,693 people traveling in cars and light trucks.

What should I wear to a school bus driver interview?

I would err on the side of caution for wearing a suit to an interview for a school bus driver position, any bus driver position really. The person interviewing may be the Transport Manager (though may be slightly different if you’re employed directly by the school) and most likely s/he would have been a driver previously. It is my firm belief that they will hold a “blue-collar” mentality and a potential candidate who is too nattily turned out will, unfortunately give a slightly bad vibe, especially one in a smart well fitted suit.I’ve been hired by three different bus companies and I’ve always worn blue or white shirt with a non-descript tie (it's up to you, keep it simple) dark navy or black trousers, smart but not fancy shoes, and a non-matching jacket. The last point is crucial, it will keep you grounded and cement your chances at acing the interview! God luck.I’ll add a picture later. Watch this space. Here we go, sorry for the poor quality, but it will have to do. This a is quick pic my wife took before one of my interviews.

Why aren't there seat belts on school buses yet?

This is a great question. The main reason why school buses do not have constraints is because they may actually cause more harm. Think about this, if there is an accident and a school bus is involved, then the children in restraints may suffer from more injuries by being restrained. It may make sense to have the children in seat belts, but it causes more harm if there is an accident. Lets just say a school bus is in an accident and the bus is flipped over. With the children being in restraints they are thus pinned in the wreckage. That causes more injury when you are pinned in. It also increases the likelihood of a fatality if you cannot retreat from the wreckage so quickly. As it stands now, buses don't have seat belts. I'm not saying its a bad idea to have seat belts, but its just a way to keep children from being pinned in the wreckage.

Edit: One other reason, is also the amount of money that the government is not willing to give to these causes. It would cost a great deal just to provide safety restraints to all school buses in every school district.
