Thinking About Becoming Vegan

I'm thinking about becoming a vegan...?

DO!!!! become a vegan!! it rocks!! vegans dont eat jelly, or anything with gelatine!! meat, or any animal products....as long as you get a balanced diet it is fine. i got blood tests and i have better blood then my doctor. we cant get vitamin b though, but that can be got from suppliments, all other nutrients are somewhat easy to get too especially from suppliments, think of the saturated fat in milk, all the pregnancies cows have to go through to produce the milk. it is meant for calves, and humans are the only mammals who drink milk past weaning. we can get iron from veg and fortified cereals, im vegan for 2 years and im not anaemic....been off dairy for 7 years and im healthy, although i indulge in vegan junk a bit much so could loose a few pounds..... we dont need alot of protein, only a few grams a day which is easy to get. soya beans contain around 74%HBV protein which is not far off meat, it is really brilliant to be vegan and there are some lovely recipes, my sister makes the best vegan cakes, and its my birthday tuesday so i look forward to one!!
Go vegan....it realy is brilliant!!
whoooo go vegan!!!! x

Thinking of becoming a vegetarian?

I am considering becoming a vegetarian after seeing a documentary on how the animals are treated over the weekend. I haven't eaten meat since and I honestly don't know if I ever will again. I have a few questions though for vegetarians. If you want to answer a few or all of these I would be grateful!
1. Do you avoid things cooked with chicken broth or beef broth?
2. Do you avoid dishes with meat all together or can you pick some of it out? I would love to eat all vegetarian foods but I live with my parents and they often cook dinner, so sometimes everything has meat in it. Does it still count if you eat it but pick all the meat out?
3. What are some good substitutions, whether vegetables or products created to resemble meat?
4. If it has been years, do you ever miss meat or crave it?

I never really ate a lot of meat to begin with, so I don't think vegetarianism will be a huge change, though I'll have to see how it goes! Thanks in advance!

I am thinking of becoming vegan. How do you get all of your vitamins only from fruit and vegetables? Do you have to supplement with vitamins?

You definitely should supplement B12 and choose fortified foods, because no non-animal source has been proven to provide you with a sufficient amount of it. B12 deficiencies can be very dangerous, therefore you must make sure you get enough of it. Also, if your sun exposure is limited, you should supplement vit. D (vegans use D2, which is derived from non-animal sources, instead of D3). A very useful guide to B12 supplementation can be found here Vitamin B12 - The Vegan SocietyAll the other nutrients can be delivered by a well balanced vegan diet.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A VEGETARIAN?

Ok first of all I'm 15 and have been vegetarian since I was 9 and I am perfectly healthy. My skin is not pale (well not particularly but I am English) and you're right eating any animal is not vegetarian. You won't need to skip pizza anyway because it is allowed for you to put vegetables as a topping. I think don't think it's wrong to drink milk and eat eggs after all nothing is hurt or killed in the process. You can buy meat substitute products like Quorn or soy which supply all the protein that meat can gives and tastes the same (some say they prefer it) and comes in many different forms from sausages to nuggets, steaks to fillets. Becoming vegetarian is a great idea and I insist you try it.

Are you thinking of becoming a vegetarian or vegan and why? Has it been easy or are peoples reactions negative?

Hey! Vegan here! I’ll be honest, it’s shocking how different vegans and vegetarians are perceived in the omnivore world. It seems that vegetarians have so many options when it comes to going out to eat. most places have a designated menu for them, however choices are limited for vegans. ( vegetarians can definitely consume vegan foods. But vegans can’t eat vegetarian food because of animal byproducts that we don't consume, but vegetarians can)I also noticed back when I was a vegetarian, people were nicer about it and less likely to judge me. From personal observation, it seems that when I went vegan, people’s reactions were not as supportive of me and there’s still a lot of disapproval. I also never really talked about being a vegetarian/vegan unless I was asked or put in a social situation where food was involved, where I had to disclose my dietary needs. No one seem to have that much of a problem with it when I was a vegetarian. People were actually very accommodating.. but now, when I’m put in a situation where I have to say that I’m “vegan”, instead of “vegetarian” people will not hesitate to roll eyes at me. ( I’ll never forget one time I was at a restaurant dining with my mom and her friends, I never said anything until the server came by and I simply asked if they had any vegan options. The server left and my mother‘s friend told me “it was not attractive for me to announce something like that”)To me, it’s just sad. I never went vegan because I thought I was better than anyone. I didn’t do it to make people feel bad about themselves. I did it because my body was rejecting certain foods and I had health issues that people didn’t know about. Yet, I’m judged based off of my current dietary needs that finally work for me and have been for three years. I also live with a family and I date someone who still consumes animal products, so I don’t believe that just because I changed my lifestyle, that everyone should follow, people only change if they want/need to when it’s right for them, that’s how I did it.

I'm thinking about becoming a vegan or vegetarian, but I feel it may be complicated. Has anyone lost weight from this?

I’ve been a vegan (technically I’m a vegetarian…I take Whey Protein Powder because I lift weights) for over ten years…it’s not that complicated…just don’t eat meat or or drink milk.It was the best decision I made in my entire life. Yes, you will lose weight, basically you’re using half your energy to digest twice as fast…or eat twice as much. because veggies digest a lot faster than meat.Just remember you have to get protein…nuts…protein powder…something.Fact is, you’re probably not ever going to go full blown vegan (I did it for years)…there are too many things that have substances and you have no idea as to what’s in them, but I think the main point is to eradicate meat eating and milk drinking out of your life. I mean, you can…if you want to.One piece of cake…which has maybe 1/16 of a teaspoon of milk and maybe one eyedropper of an egg isn’t going to slow things down if you splurge and have it once in a while.Personally, I don’t worry about it past not eating meat or eating milk, cheese, etc.Message me if you have a specific question.

I'm thinking of becoming a juicetarian... should I?

No, not a good idea. Become a breatharian instead.

I'm thinking about becoming a part-time vegetarian?

I'm afraid you, like many people who contribute to this site, misunderstand the term "vegetarian". As some of the others have said, you can't be a "part-time vegetarian"! A "vegetarian" is a person who NEVER eats "meat" of any kind (this includes fish, shell fish, poultry and game), no animal flesh AT ALL.

Everyone who eats meat is a "part-time vegetarian"! What it sounds like you are thinking of doing is reducing the amount of meat you eat. That's fine if that's what you want to do but I'm afraid there is no special name for a person who decides to reduce their intake of a certain food whether it's meat, beer, cheese or anything.

For reasons that I can't understand, there are quite a few people who find vegetarianism fashionable and want to be able to attach the label "vegetarian" to themselves without actually becoming "vegetarian". These people, in "the real World" just come across as idiots.

Eat whatever you think best, but don,t worry about the labels. As you get older you'll find that no one cares.

I'm really thinking about becoming vegan but my boyfriend is a huge meat lover. How should I tell him I want to become vegan?

What do you need from that conversation, his approval? Have you given your boyfriend authority over what you do and don’t eat? Do you cook him steaks, and fear his disapproval if you stop performing that task? You’re not even vegan yet, you haven’t yet decided yourself. If you think it would go better for you and for your relationship, and if this is a relationship you want to keep, why don’t you withdraw from meat and animal products a little bit gradually. Giving up one animal group at a time, say.If this is your intimate partner and this is something important to you, just talk about it the way you would anything else that’s important to you. If you don’t care what he eats, make sure he realizes that. If you do care, make sure he realizes that. Surely, if he is your boyfriend, he already knows you’re an animal lover, right? Is this such a big leap from where he knows you’re already at? Is it possible you’re thinking about taking this on because you want to give him a reason for him to break up with you, because you don’t have the heart to break it off yourself?
