What are some symptoms of tonsillitis?

Tonsils are the two lymph nodes located on each side of the back of the throat. They work as defense mechanisms. They help protect your body from infections, but when the tonsils become infected, the condition is called tonsillitis. There are various types of tonsillitis as well as many possible symptoms that include:1. A scratchy-sounding voice2. A very sore throat3. Chills4. Bad breath5. Difficult or painful swallowing6. Earaches7. Headaches8. Fever9. Jaw and neck tenderness due to swollen lymph nodes10. Stomachaches11. Tonsils that seems red and swollen12. A stiff neck13. Symptoms of Strep Throat without Tonsils?

Having had a tonsillectomy doesn't preclude having a Strep throat infection. The difference is that you won't also have tonsillitis. This is the time of year for Strep infections.

"I thought I may have just the common cold, but wanted to make sure in case I should get checked in case of need of antibiotics" -- I understand your financial concerns but I don't understand how you intend to "make sure" that you have a cold instead of a bacterial infection by posting this online. You can't be diagnosed here. Part of making a diagnosis of any throat condition is a visual exam. Your throat can't be seen online, right? Vital signs are also indicators. We can't check those here and in any case they'd be meaningful to only 0.1% of us, myself included. And the only people who can make a medical diagnosis are an NP, PA, DO and MD. Sometimes people post to get another point of view but I hope our opinions aren't 'that' influential. You seem very sharp and on top of things. You'll do what's best for yourself.

From your description, whatever this is, it's primarily on the left. Strep bacteria live in your throat and respiratory tract. As long as the numbers stay below infectious levels, there's no infection. Make sure you practice good oral hygiene and when this current condition resolves, buy a new tooth brush and, in fact, buy several and change toothbrushes every 3 months like clockwork!

Have you tried locating a free or low-cost clinic to go to? You may find one or two. Because if this IS a Strep throat infection, you already know you'll need an antibiotic to reduce the Strep to noninfectious levels so that post-Strep infection complication like Strep infections in the joints, kidneys, heart and/or brain can be avoided. If you find a free clinic, then the biggest expense will be the antibiotic. Penicillin is probably the cheapest.

Which is more painful, tonsillitis, strep throat or mono?

Tonsillitis - mono doesn't hurt - strep does but not as bad as swollen inflamed tonsils.

What are the symptoms of strep throat?

My throat has been hurting since this morning, and it hurts hecka bad! i have been losing my voice off and on, can someone please help tell me what some of the symptoms are for strep throat?? thank ya

Are sore tonsils a symptom of a uti?

Unusual, but I suspect your body is just trying to fight off the urinary infection. Your tonsils are just lymph nodes that happen to sit in the back of your throat, usually just to fight local infection. It is not common, but I do see an occasional person with presentations like this - your tonsils are getting the signal probably by the immune system sending out cytokines (substances, such as interferon, interleukin, and growth factors, that are secreted by certain cells of the immune system and have an effect on other cells) to help out. Your tonsils are not infected, just reacting.

Is severe neck pain common with tonsillitis/strep throat?

I have had a cold for about 2 weeks now. On Saturday I woke up with severe chills, high fever, cough, congestion, body aches, and I was extremely cold all day. I treated it with DayQuil and Theraflu. It did help somewhat, but it was very short lived. That night and the night before I was very restless and couldn't sleep. I woke up the next morning with a very sore throat and later that evening developed an extremely sore/stiff neck. My head also hurt tremendously, especially when I coughed or bent over. The next day the neck pain was worse and I called my doctor, but they were booked. Later I decided that I couldn't handle it any longer and went to the ER. The doctor said that my tonsils were covered with puss and I had tonsillitis. He also noted that there was some wheezing and a hard barking cough that sounded like bronchitis. He gave me some cough medicine, 4 500 mg amoxycillin and 400 mg ibuprofen. He also presribed 500 mg amoxycillin 3x per day for 10 days, cough/congestion syrup with codeine and an albuterol inhaler. He came in wanting to do a strep test, but the nurse had already given me antibiotics so he said that since my throat was already coated with antibiotics he couldn't rely on the test. My neck still hurts horribly and neither tylenol or motrin even touch the pain. What else can I do to relieve the pain? Apparently the ER doctor believed it to be bacterial since he prescribed antibiotics, and he seems to think that the tonsillitis is secondary to a severe cold, not related to it since he also suspected strep which I know usually does not present with cold/flu symptoms. But my concern is the neck pain. Is it common with tonsillitis and strep throat? Should I be worried about something else? I am supposed to follow up with my doctor on Thursday, but I am worried and want some answers or opinions. This neck pain is just unbearable!

Sore throat on one side? No tonsils.?

The right side of my throat has been KILLING me for about 12 hours now. It hurts to talk. I can barely eat. Drinking is painful. And I physically can not stick my tongue out or open my mouth very wide because it is so painful... I do not have tonsils, and I feel no other symptoms besides a very light dull pain in my right ear. Cough drops and sore throat medicine have not worked.
Other than the throat pain, I feel great. What could this be?
