To Become A Medical Illustrator Which Bachelor Degree Is Better Biology Or Illustration

Can I become a doctor and a medical illustrator?

I'm a junior in high school right now and I'm planning on going to medical school and becoming a doctor in the future. However, I'm also interested in medical illustration. Would it be possible for me to become a doctor first, and then go into the field of medical illustration in my later years (maybe after 10-15 years of being a doctor)?

How would I go about doing this? Should I just focus on becoming a doctor first and then go back to school once I want to become a medical illustrator? Or should I major in something, say, Biology or Chemistry in college and minor in Illustration? Art is one of my favorite hobbies and I already possess fairly advanced skills in it. I'm currently taking art and AP Chemistry and I plan on taking AP Biology and AP Studio Art next year. I volunteer in my community and I have a GPA of about 3.9.

Thanks!

Will medical illustration be a good career?

You won't have that much luck finding a job with that degree. It's not in demand. There's a reason you never hear anyone say 'I'm a medical illustrator'.

I liked biology and physics in high school. I decided that I wanted to get a degree in biology. However, my cousin ended up getting a degree in biology and couldn't get a job. I looked into it and found that it's a next to useless degree.

The sad truth is that we can't always follow our passions if we want to eat and have a home. You should do something that you enjoy doing, but pick something that will actually get you a job. I see plenty of people go for worthless degrees- psychology, philosophy, sociology and even dance. Those degrees are only good for getting into graduate school (dance is worthless regardless of how far you take it, but I'm sure you know that). Even if you go for a PhD, you'll have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars only to make decent money. You'll be in a lot of debt, you'll still have some trouble finding a job and you'll eventually think 'I wish I majored in something else'.
