Now the manifesto....
Bellydance is very welcoming to all shapes sizes and ages of dancers. Women with less than perfect bodies can enjoy themselves, and even, excel. They learn to celebrate what they have instead of hiding away in tent like camouflage. It's one of the very few activities they can participate in without being made to feel awkward or out of place. Because such a welcome is exceptional, bellydance at a fun level, may appear to have more larger ladies participating than many other physical activities.

As confidence in their bodies and abilities blossoms, many will even risk comment, or even ridicule, by dancing in public at charity events etc. I admire their strength of character.

Look at these beautiful ladies from Fat Chance Belly Dance, and read the comments.

Once you have seen a women only hafla with dancers of all shapes and sizes dressed up in their costumes and really enjoying themselves, you'd be thankful that such a welcoming and non judgmental community exists. I'm proud to be part of it.

Short and chubby! Help!?

Welllll this 8th grade year my school is having a "mask dance" mascuraid or whatever. So with a mask I can impress my crush!

I need a cute dress, I like coverage but I'm fine with short dresses. I like baby doll dresses and floral print.

BUT! I'm short and kinda chubby D: I'm not a big fan of my arms... Any dress ideas??? Nothing to fancy, simple would be nice! I like sundresses and puffy at the bottem :)

the dance is in May and it's warm! If you have a good pair of shoes also that's be good!

Thanks! (Not to fancy and thin fabrics are.. Ehh)

Why do most ballet dancers have very small chests?

If you look back to images of popular dancers during the romantic era, many dancers had a more “full figure.” As pointe shoes became more functional and ballet became more rigorous, “athletic” bodies became more desirable than “feminine” ones (trying my best to keep this explanation succinct, I understand the problems with this wording). Then came Balanchine. His line-based choreography shook the ballet world and changed the aesthetic of ballet to what we consider “modern ballet.” Dancers in his company looked the same in order to facilitate geometric designs and complicated movement sequences. Shape clarity, although it had always been important, was absolutely essential. It just happened to be that flat-chested, thin and tall women worked well for Balanchine’s aesthetic. Balanchine’s success popularized the thin ballerina stereotype and the ideal spread to companies everywhere. Not to say that busty ballerinas don’t exist or can’t be hired, but this is where that thin figure ideal comes from. Also, breasts are mainly fat, and when exercising as much as dancers do, they are bound to shrink a little.

Am I do old or too fat to become a professional dancer?

Being too fat is something you can change. However you could be thin as a pin and not have a dancer's body as it is a specific bone and muscle structure.

Being too old is not something you can change and you have aged out of the kind of training that could get you a dance career.

You cannot teach yourself ballet as copying foot and arm positions doesn't mean you are doing things correctly. You need to learn to engage the right muscles to get you there all the while in proper alignment. Only a qualified teacher can do that as you need their eyes and hands on for corrections. You also need a proper sprung or floating floor to work on like you would find in a reputable dance studio or else you will get injuries. Did you know that professional ballet dancers never practice at home because of those reasons? Instead of home practice they take daily technique classes with the company ballet master/mistress before rehearsals and performances.

While a dance career is not realistic, there is no reason why you can't take recreational ballet classes. Find a teen or teen/adult beginner class and get started.

Should I wear pantyhose to my high school semi-formal dance?

yes. semi-formal is synonymous with after-five. pantyhose adds a neat quality to the ensemble. just make sure to buy a pair with invisible reinforcement at the toe if you plan to wear a peep toe or a slightly open toe shoe.

have fun! :)

I took up pole dancing, and cut back on my diet, yet when I weighed myself with the Dr. I gained weight. My clothes still fit me. What is going on?

Muscle weighs more than fat. If your clothes still fit, then you are replacing fat with muscle. It's a good thing. Keep up the good work. Also remember that muscle burns fat. So more muscle helps burn more fat. Diet is 90% of weight loss. But adding muscle gives more efficacy to the diet. Seriously keep it up. Your body composition is most important, not your weight. It sounds like your body composition is headed in the right direction.

How do I wear a sari in a way that hides my belly fat, love handles and muffin top?

Check the image below :She is a T.V serial actress named “Gopi” from the very popular daily soap on Star plus channel “Sath nibhana sathiya” She generally wears this gujarati style saree. This can help a lot in hiding belly fat and yet flaunt your style in a traditional way.Another option is to get the saree blouse stitched in this style worn by Aishwarya Rai. This was her post pregnancy public appearance hence we understand that why she had worn this style. The Bollywood beauty has managed to carry this style in a very gracious manner. Am I too fat to become at Ballerina?

It may not be your weight that is the problem for becoming a professional ballet dancer. You should know that the term "Ballerina" is the name given to the one top ballet dancer in a professional company. Even others who may dance the lead in a ballet would not be the "ballerina" of the company.
That aside, you need to be more than the right height and weight to be a professional ballet dancer. You need to have been born in the 2% of the population that has a ballet body. That mean high arch feet with a top bump, long stretchy achilles tendons, 90 degrees of turn out form each hip from the hip rotators not he knees or ankles, long hyper-extended legs, long arms and neck, short torso, small round head and tons of facility. You also need to be training in a world class ballet academy at your age. Taking at least 15 hours a week (30-35 hours in the summer months per week) of technique classes at your age not counting rehearsals. By 14 that goes up to 20-30 hours per week. Training should be complete at age 16 when you apprentice with a ballet company. If you are not in a top ballet academy, then you must not wait any longer and audition right away. If you have good solid training and the body, there is a good chance they may take you. You may have to move and dorm in your academy and be home schooled or take academics as arranged by your academy in order to take enough technique classes. This is the way it is done. Taking class in a recital studio or competition dance or even graded ballet is all recreational ballet training not professional training. The time to worry about your weight is when you hit apprentice age and have stopped growing taller. You are close enough now to the proper weight for it not to be a concern of yours. Your body is also probably going through the changes of puberty.
