Why is the RPM of a tractors engine lesser than a car's diesel engine, and produce less HP as compared to cars despite having more CC?

This has to do with rev band to get vehicle speed. An industrial, marine or agricultural diesel engine is all about torque and the car engine all about speed.If you could imagine driving a car that reved to just 2000rpm and you want to drive on the autostrade at 130km/hr. You would need a lot of gear ratio change steps to get the vehicle from rest to 130kms/hr. The revs of a modern car diesel at this speed will be around 2500 to 3000rpm.Tractors you choose a speed that is suitable for the implement you are using and leave the engine with a hand throttle running at its rated rpm which gives the standard PTO speed of 540rpm. HP is a function of torque by RPM so if the engine has its torque band moved up the rpm band it will produce more HP but wont pull on long hills in low gear as another engine with the same torque value but at lower rpm and less HP at higher rpm. The latter may have a higher top speed on the flat at the expense of fuel consumption.
